But they are following the battle with careful interest. Republicans have no chance of naming a GOP pre siding officer because the Democrats control the senate 20-10. But they prefer Sen Harry Boivin. (D - Klamath Falls), who is more conserve tive than Sen. McCort of San Jose, Calif., told 'the Radiological Society of North America meeting re cently. McCort said an x-ray ex amination was valuable in determining the rupture or laceration of the liver by nonpenetrating injury among 26 accident victims, of whom 21 vyere in auto smashups. Of the other five, one was kicked by a horse and four were hurt by falls or falling objects. ' In 21 of these patients, the San Jose physician said bleed ing within the abdominal cav ity was detected by - x-ray. Twelve of the 26 showed frac tures of the right lower ribs accompanied by contusion of the soft tissues, the chest and the lung. In treating blunt injury to the abdomen, McCort explain ed, the physician Is faced with The liberals, led by State Chairman Robert Straub, real ize that with Republican sup port Boivin has the presidency in his pocket unless they change the minds of some of the Democrats who favor him. They said they did reverse the vote of one Democrat this week - that of Sen. Alice Cor bett of Portland. Lyndel Newbry, (R-Ashland), will give him 19 votes for president while needing only 16. Some Republican officials have mixed feelings about the Democratic inter-party fight, One says there is concern that the squabbling may ad versely affect any kind of co- operation during the 1961 ses sion. Another good reason to keen silent is that a GOP attack might divert attention of the Democrats from themselves and crystallize the Democratic front. They feel Gov. Mark Hat field's programs would fare bettervin the Senate with Boi vin at the helm. Mau rine Neuberger, (D-Ore.), has urged continuation of West Coast airline services to the cities of Baker and Ontario Payette. .Mrs. Neuberger urged "In the strongeet possible terms" that the service to the two areas be continued. She made the request in a letter to Whit ney Gillilland, chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board. The matter is currently un der consideration by the CAB. Earlier, a CAB hearing . ex aminer recommended continu ation of service to the Eastern Oregon points. Continuance Justified Mrs. Neuberger wrote that "evidence in" these cases shows existence of unusual or com pelling circumstances of West Coast service in spite of un favorable volume of passenger boardings. Because of loca tion, ''climatic conditions and isolation such service is essen tial." She added that if service is not renewed at Baker and was continued at Ontario-Payette, Baker passengers to Portland would have to travel 75 miles backward over a winding, canyon road to utilize air service scheduling. She said Baker's greatest need was service permitting a one-day business trip to Portland. Mrs. Neuberger added that better service to Baker also would mean better service to Ontario-Payette, where the same scheduling and routing problems exist. Airline Official Speaks A West Coast Airlines vice president has urged the CAB to renew the airline's author ity to serve Burley-Rupert, Idaho and to cancel its oper ating rights at six other points. Hatfield Studies Thornton Opinion SnIem-luri-Gov. Mark Hat field said Wednesday night he is studying Attorney Gen eral Robert Y. Thornton's sub merge lands opinion and would withhold comment un til conferring with the other two members of the State Land Board, Secretary' of State Howell Appling Jr. and State Treasurer Howard C. Belton. Thornton said the land board has no authority to enter into an oil exploration lease and Hint Oregon law on the subject will have to be clarified first.
