Sometimes, in the case of a man with a "napkin ring" type of cancer Idea Booklet Now Being Distributed Medford's parks and recre ation department this week is distributing a booklet con taining party and game ideas for the Christmas season to all interested youth organiza tions in the Medford area. The booklet, entitled "Sea sons Greetings," is the fifth in a series of seasonal book lets to be distributed by the department during the past year. " The department has estab lished a mailing list for those organizations that acquired the previous booklets and these groups will receive copies of the Christmas edi tion. Othqr interested groups may obtain copies by contact ing the department in the city hall. Department Director Rob ert Haworth said 750 of the 20 - page booklets have been printed. They are distributed without charge. In addition to party and game ideas, the booklet con tains suggestions for home made Christmas decorations for the Christmas tree and otherwise. It also contains recipes for simple Christmas season refreshments. Blank Below Jaycees Organisation) , Medford Front entrance Q . of the bowel, the ring will grow almost closed, or it will become plugged with a piece of lettuce or fruit skin. Then, the man probably will have to be operated on quickly. What are the symptoms? They vary with the location of the obstruction. ' If the up per part of the small bowel is obstructed, the symptoms are likely to be violent, with much vomiting and pain and toxicity. The man then may soon die; but if the obstruction comes on slowly in the colon (large bowel), there may be bloating, rhythmic pains, and nausea, without much toxi city. Sometimes, with each laborlike pain, a segment of bowel will be seen to rise up. Then with a gurgle and the temporary cessation of pain, the loop will fall down and disappear. Usually, with a severe obstruction the person is unable to pass gas or fecal matter. ' Nowadays, the surgeon of ten will, first, "decompress" the patient by running a tube down through his nose and stomach into his bowel. By exerting suction on this tube he often will remove the gas and put a stop to the power ful contractions of the bowel which are so distressing and so likely to lead to a state of shock and toxicity. Greater Recovery Chance After the patient has been gotten into a good condition, he can be operated on with a much greater chance of re covery than if he had rushed to the operating-room when he came into the hospital. One thing that all people should know is that a purga tive must never be given to a person who has serious ab dominal pain of a type which could be due to (in childhood) an acute appendicitis, or in an older person, to an intestinal obstruction. Why? Because in these cases, the giving of a purga tive commonly makes the sit uation so much more acute that the person dies. It is well, also, not to give mor phine because this drug can cause the patient to say he is fine when really he is headed for death. WHIT'Q TV & RADIO TIMUI O SERVICE "Oldest Shop in So.
