MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, ORE. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1960 Udall, Seaton In Gef-Togefher WashIngton-(UPD-Rep. Stuart Udall, newly named interior secretary in the Kennedy ad ministration, had a friendly get together Thursday with the man he will succeed Fred A. Seaton. Udall, an Arizona Demo crat, conferred with Seaton at a private lunch meeting. He then talked with newsmen for 30 minutes but declined to commit himself on any major policy questions at this time. "The secretary and I are good friends," Udall said. "We discussed a great many things. He gave me a lot of good advice ... He was more than generous in offering as sistance during the transition period. I do appreciate it." OIOI D o D o OX30 II ONE ONLY U MONARCH GAS RANGE Q 1961 Demonstrator. Phone SP 2-5750 1045 S. Riverside Pickin' Pears News and Notes From Camp White By WALTER TOWNSEND On the Thanksgiving Menu at the VA Domiciliary, White City, came the following mes sage to nearly a thousand members: "Thanksgiving Day Greet ings 1960. Throughout the year, each of us gives thanks in his own way for special gifts and blessings that may come to us. "At Thanksgiving, we join together to express our thanks as a nation for the devine guidance and bounty that is ours to share and enjoy. "May your observance of the day in the traditional man ner be one of enjoyment and thanksgiving. Henry C. Her zog, Manager." On each tray, this cheering greeting mot the eye, togeth er with roast turkey, sauer kraut dressing - giblet gravy, candied sweet potatoes; but tered frozen succotash, cran berry sauce - ripe olives; celery curls, hot rolls - but ter; pumpkin pie with whip ped cream; coffee cream milk; fruit plate and candies. On closer inspection, it was found the VFW auxiliary, De partment of Oregon, had fur nished the Menu Cards, upon which the manager's greeting to the men was inscribed. The courtesy of the VFW, and thoughtfulness of the manager, brought forth a great deal of pleased com ment from members ot the domiciliary. Looking at the big velvet rope, , which promises some thing splendid to those who enter when it is unhooked, your curiosity is aroused about the new addition to the coffee shop. Here, like Ye Olde Lon don Coffee Houses, men sit, and settle the problems of the world. As you come in you are struck with the atmos phere which is light and gay, built with windows on three sides, like an enormous so larium. Its soft green walls make a perfect background for the sunshine yellow and green chairs. The booth seats are deep and comfortable, condu cive to reminiscing over a cup of coffee, or chattering with a friend. Charles Reynolds, a tall man with a top coat, came striding in out of the rain. He took one look around. "I think it is the cat's whiskers," Mr. Reynolds said. Thinks It's Nice " I think it's very nice my self," Robert Stryler said, looking up from a taoie wnere he sat. "It makes so mucn more room - more than we used to have." He wore braces but used to be a build er. He thought for a moment. "Ph. tipw huildine is nice. the furniture and lighting makes the place gay ana cheerful." Mr. Stryler thought t h e matter over more carefully, as he looked around. "Every brick in this new structure must have cost not less than 12 cents a piece." . Hyman Zwick, wearing an artificial limb, sat at anoth- Telephone Almanac Is Now Available Thp Tplpnhone Almanac for 1961 is now available without charge in Pacific Telephone Northwest's Medford business office, according to Manager J. H. Creager. "Firsts in Fast Communica tion" are featured in the Al manac for 1961. Ancient Per sian runners, the Overland Ex press, messages carried by gas filled balloons, the underseas telegraph cable in 1866 and today's satellite communica tion program and proposals are some of the firsts in speed ing words and speech de scribed in the new issue. The 39th edition of the Al manac contains the customary "information for farmers, businessmen, housewives, stu dents and other telephone users" as the title page states. er table, and made no com ment until he was asked. "It's an improvement," he said. Color-Scheme Contrasts "I like the floor," Ben Gas pin said, "it doesn't hurt your eyes." He further explained how the new addition to the coffee shop had at least six tones of color-scheme con trasts, which made them blend in, and effect a pleasing re sult. At this point of the favor able comment, two younger veterans, late of Palo Alto, strode in with pomp and cere mony. They are known as "Damon and Pythias," and usually agree with one anoth er. It was a surprise to see how their opinions clashed on the beautiful new addition to the coffee shop. Damon spoke first. "I think it's money thrown away," he observed with a critical eye. "Look at the people who come in here!" he urged, "why don't they go somewhere else?" Pythias asked him what would have been better? "Long tables with stools," Damon replied, without a mo ment's hesitation. Too Many Tables Youre wrong there," his partner in morning coffee, ar gued. "You don't know what you are talking abount," Py thias finally exploded, ' there is too many long tables with stools here now." The altercation raged. The two friends could not agree. They went out at last togeth er, as firmly fixed as ever, in their separate beliefs. Py thias was for the new coffee shop addition, and Damon was incensed at the money that had been spent - for noth ing! The tables in the center of the room also boast of color ful chairs but these are often pushed aside - to make room for the wheelchair members who like to gather too. The whole place has a dashing modern look like many of the new establishments in the city. Many men here get away from the domiciliary very sel dom. In fact many wheel chair members have not been away for years. And this is one way in which a little bit of the outside world is brought to them, so they too, can feel up to date. bob hart BE OUR GUEST 1:00 to 5:00 1809 E.
