The Pilots, winning their third game in four starts this year, led at halftime, 36-27. Fresno State closed the gap to two points at one point in the second half to 45-43 with 9:04 remaining. The NSWB recently com pleted Its Bowlers Veteran league classic at the Siskiyou lanes. There were 232 women entered. Trophy winners in the classes were: A class -Marguerite Rone; B class-Betty Brown; C Class-Ruth Law son; D Class-Gloria Phillipe and E Class-Lorraine Ma thieson. I T uTifi mi I i "iHUiji. rom Wa Irons Slate Rogue Reports Monday Night Travis Roberts, regional su pervisor of the sports fishery and wildlife service, and Hen ry Stewart, of the Portland of fice of the Corps of Engineers, will give reports' Monday, Dec. 12, to the Jackson Coun ty chapter of the Izaak Walton league. Regular meeting of the chapter is set for 8 p.m. at the American Red Cross building on Hawthorne avc. Roberts will report on the temperature - stream flow study of the Rogue. Stewart will discuss core drilling mode at Lost creek dam site to determine possibility of in creasing the capacity of the proposed reservoir. He will give, also, information on the possibilities of water storage in Big Butte crek drainage. A report on the recent Ore gon division convention of the IWL and salient features of some of the resolutions will be made. The meeting is open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Local Students Halberg To Run In Invitational Portland - Murray Halberg and Dallas Long, two of the world's greatest track per formers, will be in action at the Oregon Indoor Invitation al I rack meet, scheduled for Jan. 14 at Portland's new Me morial Coliseum, according to meet oinciais. Halberg, considered one of the finest distance runners in the world, won the 5,000 meters at the 1960 Rome Olympics and placed seventh in the 10,000 meter test; His appearance in the Oregon meet will probably be the only competitive showing by the New Zcalander in this country this winter. Halberg, who is coming to Portland from Brazil, must re turn to his native land for that country's national champion ships within a week after the local meet. A possible oooon ent for Halberg, who will run in eitncr the mile or two-mile is Dyrol Burleson, Olympic uames competitor from Cot tage Grove and the Universitv or Oregon. Lone is rated the best col legiate shot putter in the na tion off his third place finish in the 1960 Olympics. He com bined with Bill Nieder and Parry O'Brien, who finished one-two at Rome, to give the United States a sween of the snot put. A head to head duel between the youthful , Long ana me veteran o Brien, who has been one of the world's best in the shot put for 10 years, is a distinct possibility for the Oregon Indoor Invita tional Track Meet. Grid Game Turnouts Below Expectations Corvallis - Oregon Stale's football attendance for 1960, all games included, was far below expectations of last summer when such forecasts are made. All told, the Beavers drew 226,652, and it was hoped the Ugures would be more around 300,000. Biggest throng OSC plays to was the 43,000 at Iowa, and had it not rained all night the Friday before the game and all morning of the game itself, it may have been much higher. Other game attendance for 1960 included USC at L.A. (32,028), Houston at Portland (22,537), Indiana at Bloom ington (25,000), Idaho as Mos cow (10,500), Washington at Portland (36,833), California at Corvallis (15,745), Wash ington State and Pullman (15,- 600), Stanford at Palo Alto (7,500) and Oregon at Cor vallis (27,009). Biggest disappointments, of course, were the Indiana and Stanford crowds, though both had been consistent losers Package Skiing Trip Offered A package tour to the Shas- ta Ski bowl on Dec. 17 is being offered to any junior or senior high school student in Med- ford who skis or wishes to learn to ski. The tour includes chartered ureynound bus transporta tion, two hours skiing instruc- Hon and rope pull use. Local people arranging the trip in clude Mrs. C. H. Bufflngton; Jack Crawford, and Arthur Kkerson. Present plans call for the tour to leave Medford at 6:4b a.m., Dec. 17. Students may rent ski equipment, at addi tional charge, either in Med ford or at Shasta Ski Bowl. In terested students are asked to contact Paul Evensen at Med ford Senior high or either principal at McLouehlin and Hedrick Junior High schools before Dec. 14. Adult chaperones will ac company each bus. Accident insurance coverage for possi- oie skiing mishaps is consid ered the concern of a student's parents. Students can bring their lunches or buy them at the ski bowl. Competent skiers who would use the ski ntt are expected to pay small additional charge. Good response to foregoing ski plans would result in second supervised trip on Wednesday, Dec. 28, on a sim ilar financial basis. The 6-foot 11-inch ex-Coos Bay all-stater (and he may grow more) is the most prom ising' Beaver Rook in years perhaps ever. He can hold his own with the more exper ienced varsity members al ready. Recently the Rooks went over to scrimmage the Oregon College of Education varsity, and Counts scored 46 points in three quarters of playing time. Britain, Soviet Union To Exchange TV Shows London-fliPll-Britain and the Soviet Union will exchange several live television broad casts next year over the Wes tern European Eurovision and the Eastern European Inter vision networks. The arrangements, announc ed Friday, will bring British TV audiences performances of the Bolshoi Ballet. Soviet viewers will see the Soviet Trade Fair in London and other programs. Pick Own Chief Officials Asked To Let Senate Portland, Ore. - (UPB - Nine Democratic senators - repre senting both sides of a contest for the Oregon senate presi dency - have asked party offi cials to step aside and let the senate elect its own chief. The nine made their request in a statement calling for elec tion of a senate president "free from dictation by any party official." The statement was directed at State Democratic Chairman Robert Straub, who has called on the senate's 20 Democrats to vote in a block for Sen. Alfred Corbett of Portland. Corbett is supported by a ma jority of Democrats in t h e senate, but lacks support from the body's ten Republicans. Sen. Harry Bolvin of Klam ath Falls has claimed he will win through a coalition vote of Republicans and some Dem ocrats, if the Democrats do not vote together. The signers of the state ment included three Corbett supporters and six Boivin sup porters. Among them was Sen. President Walter Pearson, who has strongly backed Boi vin. Other signers were Sens. BAN REJECTED New York-IUPU-The Eastern College Athletic conference has overwhelmingly voted against a proposal that would nave banned "red shirting' among member shcools. Onlv 27 of the 100 delegates in at tendance supported the "red shirting" ban, which would have limited an athlete's cligi bilily to four consecutive years rather than the current five. The amendment had been offered by the confer ence's committee of principles and policies and was endorsed by its cxcutive council. 500 Requests for Legislature Bills Salem-tUPD - The office of Leigslative Counsel Sam Haley here has requests to draft some 500 bills for the 1061 Oregon Legislature. Haley has a staff of seven attorneys, who help legisla tors and members of state ag encies draft bills for intro duction. The 500 does not Include the 100 or so appropriation bins being prepared in con nection with the 1961-63 bud get of Gov. Mark Hatfield. Quarters Picketed Augusta, Ga. - (HFD - Presi dent ' Eisenhower's vacation headquarters was picketed for the first time Saturday by some 60 Negro college stu dents protesting against seg regation. Eisenhower did not see the pickets and was not informed of their activity. . A sign carried by one teen age girl questioned the Presi dent's interest in civil rights matters.
