By Lynn M, Watkins 'Skinny A A Rail' Refers to Rail Birdt Describing the lady's slen derness by saying "she is as slim as a rail" has no refer ence to the wooden bar that formed the horizontal beams of an old fashioned fence; the kind Abe Lincoln was an ex pert at splitting. The "slim rail" of the old expression was a bird. As far as the bird is concerned, this thinness has a terrific advan tage: it can pass in between two cattail stems that are al most together, without ruf fling a feather. And, peculiar ly enough, the bird seems to know how difficult it is to see, for it will deliberately turn its body to directly face any potential danger; it seems to know that edgeways, it at tains almost complete invisi bility. Looks Like Grass Then, by remaining perfect ly still, with neck out stretched, and long bill point ed skyward, it looks more like a tuft of grass than a living . bird. There are many varieties of "railbirds." Carolina, Virginia, Clapper, King and Sora rails, as well as many others, but in habits and general appearance they are much alike; all pre fer living in a swamp, marsh, or swale, where cattails and water sedges give ample hid ing places, for all the rails are secretive birds. If it were not for the pe culiar call the bird utters oc casionally, its presence would seldom be suspected. At the close approach of an intruder, the bird sneaks through the weeds, head down, skulking like a thief in the night. The rail always seems reluctant to take to the air, and will fly only as a last resort. Before it decides to fly it may even dive down under water, freeze immobile, and try to look like a reed, or adopt some other little suspected ruse. You can't blame it for preferring not to fly for it's very awkward in the air. The olive-brown color of the body, with its black bars and markings, blends in with its surroundings so perfectly it can escape even a practiced ' eye. Once on the spongy floor of its selected habitat, and unmolested, the rail steps with delicate deliberation, oc casionally plunging its long bill down into the mud. chnrt uDturned tail gives the rail a sort of un balance appearance, and along with its cardboard-like thick ness, makes it one of the most unfamiliar of all the swamp land birds. Being "slim as a rail" is a tremendous forward step in protective adaptability in the "rail family."
