Daughter of Portland Area Pioneer Dies Seaside -lUPD-Haze'l Weidler. 78, daughter of the owner of the first large sawmill in the Portland area, died lucsday night in a hospital after suf fering a stroke earlier in the day. He had been employed by the Howard and Medford school districts for 14 years; and operated the Lake Creek store from 1955 to 1960, He was a veteran of World War II: and was a member of the Independent Order of Redmen, of Medford. He was married Mav 7. 1940, in Med ford. to Lillian Davis, who survives. Other survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Deloris Grissom. Lake Creek; ivirs. Youths Admit Part In Warehouse Fire Cottage Grove - (UPI) - Three young boys Tuesday admitted entering the1 Cottage Grove Manutactunng uo. on tne eve ning of Nov. 29 when the building was destroyed by fire, police said. The fire caused an esti mated $50,000 damage. Authorities said the boys were using railroad type flares in a search for discarded pop bottles in the building and that a spark from one of the flares apparently dropped un noticed into combustible ma terial believed to be sawdust. Representatives of the Cot tage Grove fire department and the Oregon State police, who conducted the fire investi gation, stressed that the boys did not purposely set fire to the building. Van Loan, former superintendent of the Corvallis school dis trict, and now professor of education at Oregon State col lege, has been appointed sup erintendent of Beruon county schools on a part time basis A new two-passenger heli copter weighs only 478 pounds but can take off with a 1,000- pound load. New Orleans - tUPll - White attendance at an integrated school slipped to 19 today despite a heavy police guard that muzzled angry house wives. After more than two weeks of screams, curses, and ston ings, the silence at William Frantz Elementary School to day was startling. Despite the heaviest police precautions since violence broke out in the first week of integration, white attendance dropped from 23 to 19, plus Ruby Nell Bridges, the lone Negro girl in the school. Police kept up their bar ricades a block away from the school. About 20 white women standing on a lawn across the street from Frantz said police let them slay there only if they didn't yell. Not one white student showed up at McDonogh 19, the other integrated school. where three Negro girls are attending. Patrolmen kept watch through the night over the homes of John Gabrielle, who was harrassed out of his job as a meter reader, and the Rev. Andrew Foreman, a Methodist minister, after the homes were damaged in re prisal for their daughters' going to school with a Negro. The FBI was reported called in to investigate a threatening letter sent to the Rev. Mr. Foreman, whose 5 - year - old aughtcr Pamela Lynn at tends newly integrated Wil liam Frantz School. Foreman's secretary said he took Ihc letter to the FBI, but the bureau's agent in charge said "all I can tell you is we've conducted certain inquiries at the request of the Justice Department." The envelope was report ed to have contained a man's picture with the inscription that the man pictured was out to get Foreman. Angry women stoned the Gabrielle apartment Tuesday night, smashing windows and roughing up a woman report er who took gifts in to the family. . Gabrielle said he quit his $230-a-month job with the city because he was suddenly put on widely differing shifts and "the men at work didn't want anything to do with me." The new upsurge of segre gationist bitterness came as the white attendance hit 23 at Frantz Tuesday - highest since the second day of inte gration when the boycott was called and a mob of teen-agers tried to storm the other inte grated school, McDonogh 19. The McDonogh boycott re mained complete. Three Ne gro girls had the building to themselves Tuesday, as they have since the boycott hit its stride weeks ago. Police were on the scene after dark Tuesday night when the Gabrielle apartment was stoned, but were unable lo prevent the stoning or the pummelling of Isabella Taves, feature writer for Good Housekeeping. She went into the Gabrielle home with gifts, and when she came out a gang of women kicked her in Ihc skins and manhandled her before she sped away in a cab.
