He said that it is doubtful if life can arise without wa ter or progress very f9r with out oxygen. Nor is it likcl.'Q iiini me can exist anywhere without radiation - such as the radiation the earth re ceives from Oie sun that ex cites molecules electronically and so activates photochemi cal reactions. Universal Laws Therefore, it is possible to consider universal physical relationships, Wald said. The relationships In the periodic system of the elements may be assumed true everywhere in the universe; so also the laws of chemical combina tions and dissolution: and the effects of temperature, pres sure and radiation on the rates of chemical reaction. 11 may be possible to dis cover tiie widespread associ ation of certain types of or ganic molecule with special functions in organisms, by studying the evolution on earth, Wald said. Same Funclion When widely separated groups of living organisms in dependently select the same type of molecule for the same function, they may as well be on different planets. There are examples to show that such independent c h oj c e s have been made on earth, and they are governed, not by availability, but by suitabili ty. These considerations are of general Interest, but, in addition, they open up a new frontier of universal biochem istry, Wald said.
