Van Doren made the Inno cent plea despite the fact he has admitted before a con gressional inquiry that he lied when he told a New York County grand jury his appear ances on the defunct show Twenty-One" were not "fix ed." The former Columbia Uni versity's professor's attorney, Carl J. Rublno, told Chief Magistrate John M. Murtagh his client was "forced" to plead Innocent pending the' outcome of efforts by other winners on fixed shows to have the perjury charges against them invalidated. Phone SP 2-6428 Governor Sees Evidence of Election Fraud Chicago -(UPD-Illinois Repub licans headed into the recount battle today armed with a threat to withhold the state's 27 electoral votes until after the Electoral College meets. William G. Stratton, outgo ing Republican governor, is sued the ammunition Wednes day in his first news confer ence since Governor - elect Otto Kerner rode a Demo cratic landslide into the state house Nov. 8. Stratton heads the GOP- dominated Illinois Electoral Board and thus controls a normally-routine certification of the statewide vote canvass. But precedent indicates the board could refuse to certify the canvass and Stratton threatened it would do so if it received "tangible evidence of voting shenanigans Demo crats are accused of. The Electoral College meets in each state Dec. 19. Presi dent-elect John F. Kennedy needs 269 votes and is thought to have 300, including 27 based on still-unofficial results in Illinois where he holds an 8,656-vote edge. Stratton said Wednesday in Springfield that the board "won't necessarily" certify the canvass by Dec. 19, but "it will be done if there isn't enough evidence to justify holding it up. "There is considerable evi dence of fraud. Whether it is widespread enough to warrant action by the board remains to be seen," he .said. Republicans' attempts to capture the state for Vice President Richard M. Nixon centered here. They took the form of a grand jury vote probe called by defeated GOP State s Attorney Benjamin S Adamowski and a GOP-financ ed "discovery" recount of paper ballots cast for Ada mowski and Democratic suc cessor Daniel Ward. Canvass Ordered In Hunt for Clues Portland - (UPI) - Sheriff Francis Lambert today offer ed a house-to-house canvass of the Forest Park area today in the hunt for clues to the apparent abduction of coed Beverly Ann Allan, 19, and the slaying of her boy friend. Lambert said it was hoped his deputies might get infor mation from residents In the sparsely-populated area which would be of help in the in vestigation. Meanwhile, Miss Allan's parents offered a $1,000 re ward to anyone supplying in formation helpful in locating their daughter, dead or alive. Typhoon Batters Atoll in Pacific Tokvo-fflPD-A late-seasnn tv- phoon, packing winds of up to 160 miles per hour, roared across tiny Ulithl Atoll in the Western Pacific late Wednes day and flattened everything but a concrete U.S. Coast Guard station, according to reports received here today. inere were no immediate reports of casualties. The Coast Guard Loran Naviga tional Aid Station has a nor mal complement of one offi cer and 15 men. Reports said there were about 450 natives living near the facility. The reports reaching here said typhoon Ophelia wrecked every building on the atoll except for the Coast Guard installation. Government Bans Flavoring Agent Washington ItTO The gov ernment today banned the use of safrole or oil of sassafras, a flavoring agent that had been used in root beer and other beverages. The Food and Drug Admin istration announced that a special committee of scientists has found that safrole pro duced cancer in laboratory rats and dogs. The beverage industry dis continued use of the flavoring agent on a voluntary basis about a year ago when FDA tests disclosed evidence that it was toxic in laboratory animals.
