Governor Sees
Evidence of
Election Fraud
Chicago -(UPD-Illinois Repub
licans headed into the recount
battle today armed with a
threat to withhold the state's
27 electoral votes until after
the Electoral College meets.
William G. Stratton, outgo
ing Republican governor, is
sued the ammunition Wednes
day in his first news confer
ence since Governor - elect
Otto Kerner rode a Demo
cratic landslide into the state
house Nov. 8.
Stratton heads the GOP-
dominated Illinois Electoral
Board and thus controls a
normally-routine certification
of the statewide vote canvass.
But precedent indicates the
board could refuse to certify
the canvass and Stratton
threatened it would do so if
it received "tangible evidence
of voting shenanigans Demo
crats are accused of.
The Electoral College meets
in each state Dec. 19. Presi
dent-elect John F. Kennedy
needs 269 votes and is thought
to have 300, including 27
based on still-unofficial results
in Illinois where he holds an
8,656-vote edge.
Stratton said Wednesday in
Springfield that the board
"won't necessarily" certify the
canvass by Dec. 19, but "it
will be done if there isn't
enough evidence to justify
holding it up.
"There is considerable evi
dence of fraud. Whether it is
widespread enough to warrant
action by the board remains
to be seen," he .said.
Republicans' attempts to
capture the state for Vice
President Richard M. Nixon
centered here. They took the
form of a grand jury vote
probe called by defeated GOP
State s Attorney Benjamin S
Adamowski and a GOP-financ
ed "discovery" recount of
paper ballots cast for Ada
mowski and Democratic suc
cessor Daniel Ward.
Hitler-Typo Propaganda
Chicago Mayor Richard J.
Daley accused Republicans of
an empty bluff and a "con
spiracy to repeat a Hitler-type
propaganda where there is no
evidence."
He said the State Electoral
Board would not withhold re
sults, and "If they do, they
are in violation of the law. It
will be a pretty dangerous
thing if the state canvassers
say . to elected candidates,
you re not elected ."
Canvass Ordered

ed a house-to-house canvass

Government Bans
Flavoring Agent
Washington ItTO The gov
ernment today banned the use
of safrole or oil of sassafras,
a flavoring agent that had
been used in root beer and
other beverages.
The Food and Drug Admin
istration announced that a
special committee of scientists
has found that safrole pro
