Medford attorneys and their committee assignments in elude Anthony E. Piazza and Otto Frohnmayer, probate law and procedure; John R. Dellenbach and Carl M. Bro phy, board of bar examiners; J. V. McGoodwin and Russell W. DeForest, family and ju venile law; McGoodwin, civil rights; Edward Branchfield, lawyer placement and credi tors' indemnity fund. Clif D. Ouellette, corpora tion law; Robert Boyer, credi tors, rights; William V. Death erage, criminal law and pro cedure; Donald Hansen, unau thorized practice and econom ics of law practice; Kenneth J. Denman, disciplinary rules and procedure; Frank J. Van Dyke, Oregon State Bar and judicial administration; H. Dewey Wilson, law revision; Sam B. Harbison, legal aid. Others Named Manville M. Heisel, legal assistance to servicemen; Rob ert D. Hcffernan, world peace through law, and legal ethics; Robert B. Duncan, committee on legislation; Ronald L. Ashland attorney Richard C. Cottle was also named to "the committee on municipal law. In addition. G. W. Kelling-, ton of Medford, a member of the board of governors, has been assigned the assessments, corporation law, taxation, and the uniform state laws and welfare committees. Each member of the board is assign ed responsibility for several committees. The Oregon State Bar has some 47 standing committees, according to Dean F. Brysqn, Portland, president of the organization. A total of 772 attorneys from throughout the state were named to fill 1,047 com mittee posts, with some of the attorneys serving on more ihtry one committee. SWORN INTO NAVY Recently sworn into the Navy at Portland v. ere Steph en Eric Swanson, son of Mrs. Adelaide Spencer, 619 Roca St., Ashland; Lawrence Carl Rone, son of Mrs. Luicille Al len, Shady Cove; and Larry David Looper, son of Mr. and Mrs. Otha W. Looper, 5885 Crater Lake highway, Med ford. The recruits are now undergoing basic recruit train ing at the Naval training cen ter, San Diego, Calif. Civil Service Jobs Available in Areas Civil service commission of ficials have announced exam inations for filling positions such as radio operator, clerk, management analyst, budget analyst or budget officer, in ternal revenue agent, juve nile officer, engineer, physi cist, metallurgist, and medical radiology technician. The positions are open In Florida,' Washington, D.C., and points In Alaska. Dead line for application is mid December. Wood Constructed Homes Withstand Donna's Force Homes constructed of wood withstood the tremendous force of Hurricane Donna, which struck the Florida coast last summer, better than homes constructed of any other building material. Although homes built of wood did suffer con siderable damage in many cases, they stood up far bet ter than homes built of com peting materials. One report described con crete block and masonry homes, that were In the path of the hurricane as nothing but "piles of strewn rubble." Aluminum siding, also, was battered beyond use as were aluminum doors and windows, the association noted. Could Be Restored But, wood siding In the same area, although damaged, could be restored to use and proper -appearance with "a few patches and a paint job," Homes using plywood sheets to cover openings were heav ily damaged, however, be cause the force of the wind tore open the plywood and left the homes exposed to the full force of the hurricane. But most of the homes boarded with lumber remain ed securely covered, since the cracks between the boards helped to relieve the pres sure of the wind. In a critical storm area, many instances in which wood construction failed lo hold together could be attrib uted to insufficient anchorage, improper use or poor con struction practices, tile off! according to the association, clals found. For example, a number of complete roofs were blown several blocks away from their structures, yet they were found to be intact, complete with trusses and sheathing. SP 2-4564 Plans Announced For Cafe Remodeling Ashland-Charles and Louise Walters, new owners of . the Palace Cafe, 171 East Main St., Ashland, last week an nounced plans for opening a dining room in the adjacent building, occupied for the past five years by McCarley's newsstand and soda fountain. The Walters bought the Palace from Virgil Jackson two months ago. Work on re modeling is expected to start sometime after Jan. 1. Walters has been in the Testaurant business in Ash land since 1944 when, for several years he was associat ed with Mrs. Delores (Skip) Guise in the Plaza Cafe. Since 1951 he owned and operated the Top Hat Drive-in on Sis kiyou blvd., across from Sou thern Oregon college campus. Last week McCarley moved to 161 East Main st., after in stalling new fixtures and equipment in the store known by many old time Ashlanders as Chipman's Confectionery. He announced that he will feature one of the largest stocks of paper backs in the state in addition to magazines, newspapers, hobby supplies and candies.
