Wood Constructed Homes Withstand Donna's Force
Homes constructed of wood
withstood the tremendous
force of Hurricane Donna,
which struck the Florida coast
last summer, better than
homes constructed of any
other building material.
This is according to offi
cials of the Western Pine as
sociation who made a thor
ough first-hand Investigation
of the buildings damaged by

the hurricane. Although homes
built of wood did suffer con
siderable damage in many
cases, they stood up far bet
ter than homes built of com
peting materials.
One report described con
crete block and masonry
homes, that were In the path
of the hurricane as nothing
but "piles of strewn rubble."
Aluminum siding, also, was
battered beyond use as were
aluminum doors and windows,
the association noted.
Could Be Restored
But, wood siding In the
same area, although damaged,
could be restored to use and
proper -appearance with "a
few patches and a paint job,"
Homes using plywood sheets
to cover openings were heav
ily damaged, however, be
cause the force of the wind
tore open the plywood and
left the homes exposed to the
full force of the hurricane.
But most of the homes
boarded with lumber remain
ed securely covered, since the
cracks between the boards
helped to relieve the pres
sure of the wind.
In a critical storm area,
many instances in which
wood construction failed lo
hold together could be attrib
uted to insufficient anchorage,
improper use or poor con
struction practices, tile off!
according to the association, clals found. For example, a
number of complete roofs
were blown several blocks
away from their structures,
yet they were found to be
intact, complete with trusses
and sheathing. ' '
Generally, the officials con
clude, wood frame houses,
well anchored to solid wood
foundations, rode out the
storm with a minimum of
damage. ,

Plans Announced
For Cafe Remodeling
Ashland-Charles and Louise
Walters, new owners of . the
Palace Cafe, 171 East Main
St., Ashland, last week an
nounced plans for opening a
dining room in the adjacent
building, occupied for the
past five years by McCarley's
newsstand and soda fountain.
The Walters bought the
Palace from Virgil Jackson
two months ago. Work on re
modeling is expected to start
sometime after Jan. 1.
Walters has been in the
Testaurant business in Ash
land since 1944 when, for
several years he was associat
ed with Mrs. Delores (Skip)
Guise in the Plaza Cafe. Since
1951 he owned and operated
the Top Hat Drive-in on Sis
kiyou blvd., across from Sou
thern Oregon college campus.
Last week McCarley moved
to 161 East Main st., after in
stalling new fixtures and
equipment in the store known
by many old time Ashlanders
as Chipman's Confectionery.
He announced that he will
feature one of the largest
stocks of paper backs in the
state in addition to magazines,
newspapers, hobby supplies
and candies.
