ORE. Most People Claimed Circles Around Soeakers By HENRY J. BECHTOLD UPI Financial Editor New York -flIPD-Don't feel too bad if you have trouble holding an audience's atten tion during a speech. Most speakers are in the same boat. The reason: Most people "think cir cles1' around speakers, and many get lost Henry Bechtold on tangents. These are the findings of Prof. Ralph G. Nichols of the University of Minnesota who said most adults think at least four times as fast as they talk. The average American, ac cording to Nichols, speaks at a rate of 129 words per min ute among his family and friends, 100 words per minute in front of an audience. But most of us think at a "cruis ing speed" of 400 to 500 words per minute. The upshot of this, he de clared, is that learning from listening operates at an av erage efficiency of only 25 per cent. Two days after a talk, you have forgotten three fourths of what you heard. Three, Suggestions Nichols has suggested three ways to improve retention of verbal communication, all based on the fact that the mind moves faster than the voice. -Try to anticipate the speaker's next comment - if you guess right your think ing is reinforced; if you guess wrong, you will immediately compare your answer with the speaker's; either way you learn. -Identify what is being used by the speaker to sup port his points-factual ex planation, emotional exhorta tion, or illustration by exam ple. -Make mental summaries every three or four minutes during a lecture. This pays the greatest dividends in lis tening efficiency that possibly can be mastered. 'Drop-Off Pattern Shown Good listening is of utmost importance to business, but a study of 100 companies show ed a pattern of "drop-oti in communication from the top down. Vice presidents understand 67 per cent of what they hear from the board of directors and top management, accord ing to the study. They wandered aimlessly around the aisles of Gimbels, looking at the dolls and trucks and cap pistols, until a security officer for the de partment store noticed them and asked about their parents. The boy in the blue jacket spoke up proudly, "My name is Michael and I m five and I'm taking care of my sister. She is Maria and she is four." Michael said they were looking for Yogi Bear, a chil dren s toy designed after a television cartoon hero. "Mom my said we could," Michael added. Police Find Note It was near closing time and an announcement on the pub lie address system failed to produce anyone to claim the two brown-haired, dark-eyed children. They were taken to a police station where a po licewoman found a neatly written note In Michael's jack et. Both he and his sister had religious medals in their pock ets. 'These are my children, Mi chael and Maria," the note read. "They are Catholic. They have had their shots and vaccinations. I love them dear ly, but I have no money, no food and no place to go. Please be kind to them. I hope they will be happy. I hope I can come and claim them some day soon. Things are black for me. Thank you for your help." Collection Taken Up Written on a sheet of stenog rapher's notebook paper, it was unsigned. Police said it obviously was written by a woman. The officers took up a col lection and Michael and Ma ria, who faced the prospect of a bleak Thanksgiving, were placed before a meal of tur key drumsticks, chocolate milk, sandwiches and cookies Maria ate part of Michael's drumstick. Michael seemed to enjoy the cookies more than the turkey. ' A short time later they were transferred to the , children's shelter to spend the night Maria began to cry when the policemen left.
