too bad if you have trouble
holding an audience's atten
tion during a
speech. Most
speakers are
in the same
boat.
The reason:
Most people
"think cir
cles1' around
speakers, and
many get lost
Henry Bechtold on tangents.
These are the findings of
Prof. Ralph G. Nichols of the
University of Minnesota who
said most adults think at least
four times as fast as they
talk.
The average American, ac
cording to Nichols, speaks at
a rate of 129 words per min
ute among his family and
friends, 100 words per minute
in front of an audience. But
most of us think at a "cruis
ing speed" of 400 to 500
words per minute.
The upshot of this, he de
clared, is that learning from
listening operates at an av
erage efficiency of only 25
per cent. Two days after a
talk, you have forgotten three
fourths of what you heard.
Three, Suggestions
Nichols has suggested three
ways to improve retention of
verbal communication, all
based on the fact that the
mind moves faster than the
voice.
-Try to anticipate the
speaker's next comment - if
you guess right your think
ing is reinforced; if you guess
wrong, you will immediately
compare your answer with the
speaker's; either way you
learn.
-Identify what is being
used by the speaker to sup
port his points-factual ex
planation, emotional exhorta
tion, or illustration by exam
ple. -Make mental summaries
every three or four minutes
during a lecture. This pays
the greatest dividends in lis
tening efficiency that possibly
can be mastered.

Good listening is of utmost
importance to business, but a
study of 100 companies show
ed a pattern of "drop-oti in
communication from the top
down.

and top management, accord
ing to the study.

4 Workmen Killed
By Concrete Slabs
Harrisonburg, Va.-OIPB-Four
workmen were killed and
three others injured Wednes
day when 78 concrete roof
ing slabs crashed from a
partly constructed manufac
luring plant.
The victims were crushed
under the seven-ton slabs
which collapsed from the roof
"like dominoes," Howard J.
Breeding, a crime operator
who witnessed the accident,
said.
A dozen 20-ton concrete
supporting beams and an
equal number of concrete pil
lars also fell. One caved in
the cab of a pickup truck.
The dead were identified as
Raymond Theodore Schronce,
42, of Lincolnton, N.C.; Des
mond E. Wichael, 41, of Har
risonburg; George A. Kit
trell, 51, a foreman, of Rich
mond, and Leon Kirkland, 38,
of Ashland, Va., who died in
a hospital several hours after
the accident.
