What women listed first in their preferences for Christ mas presents ran, quite na turally, I d say to costly Items mink coats and fur pieces and jewelry and perfumes, a Dew car, even a trip. ' But those surveyed appar ently held slim hope of get ting their No. 1 choices. They very practically listed a bunch of other welcome gifts ; mostly items for the home. Twenty six per cent would : be pleased with houshold goods, 24 per cent listed some 'item of clothing with sweat ers high in the ratings, and S per cent asked for a sew ing machine-the one house hold item most often tloned. Major appliance choices ran to refrigerators and dishwash- ers. In small appliances, the electric mixer was mentioned most frequently. Other household items on the wanted list Included hur ricane lamps, furniture cov ers, records, tablecovers, stero equipment and electric blank ets. Only 2 per cent of the wo men asked for money. The study, which the mak ers believe is the first large scale one In the gift-buying field, was done by the Market Facts- research organization. Market Facts talked with 149 housewives in each of three major markets-urban and suburban areas of Chica go, Los Angeles and Phila delphia. The average age of the women, all married, was 40. David Caialei "Decorations for Holidays Announced as Show Theme Holiday decorating Ideas will be the theme of a show Monday, November 28, spon sored by the Central Point Garden club to be held at Ping's Garden, Medford, It will be held from 8 to 10 a.m. 'East Meets West is the name of the show to be pre sented by Robert F. Biggs and staff of the House of East and West Arts, Portland Decorat ing firm. Assisting Mr. Biggs will be George T. Dawson, who will demonstrate the classical and adaptations of the European Townsend Club Cancels Meeting No Townsend club meeting will be held November 23, the regular meeting date, and members will meet next on Wednesday, November 30 ac cording to the chairman, Mrs. Jda Kelly. Mrs. Casalez is the former Vonetla I. Van Riper, daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Van Riper, route 4, box 406, Med ford. Mr. Casalez is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Inocencio S. Cnsnlez, Wlnnemucca. The wedding was held Oc tober 8 at the Methodist church In Wlnnemucca. The Rev. Wayne Long officiated at the 8 p.m. rites attended by 25 relatives and friends. White pompon chrysanthe mums and stock decorated the church for the ceremony. Mrs. John Larson played the piano wedding music. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a white ballerina length lace over sat in frock 'with shoulder length veil, The dress neckline was round in front and formed a vee in back. Her veil of illu sion was held by a white sat in tiara accented with seed pearls and she carried a bou quet of white roses and stcph anotls. Miss Laurel L. Van Riper attended her sister. She wore a frock of lavender taffeta with white feather hat and carried a bouquet of white carnations. Rucl Casalez, brother of the bridegroom, served as best man. Following the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the newlywcd couple. The couple traveled to Reno for their wedding trip, the bride wearing for traveling a red and white velveteen suit. The bride attended Medford High school and Southern Oregon college. She is an ele mentary teacher in the Hum boldt County schools. Mr. Casalez attended Winnemucca schools and served with the U. S. Army. He is now em ployed at the Phillips Furni ture and Floor Covering com pany, Chapter Holds Pledge Ritual A formal pledge ritual was conducted by Alpha Beta chapter, Beta Sigma Phi, No vembor 15 at the Mark An tony hotel in Ashland. The candlelight ceremony was conducted by the presi dent, Mrs. Ernest Flakus, as sisted by Mrs. Tom Shoop and Mrs. Ronald Hall. Mrs. Har old Ames and Mrs. John Wat kins, first and second vice presidents, attended the pledges. The ritual table was cov ered with the traditional white satin cloth bearing the gold crest, and adorned with yellow roses and black can dles. Plodded to the sorority in the ritual were Mrs. Richard Card, Mrs. Charles Tucker, Mrs. Harris Ross, and Miss Eileen Martin. Dinner followed In the ban quet room, Mrs. Eugene Garner was hostess for the last chapter meeting, assisted by Mrs. George Polskl. The program, "The History of Dress," was given by Mrs. Fred Stock. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Harold Ames, 28 Washington street, Tuesday, November 22, at 8 p.m. Daughters Seek Children's Gifts - Members of Elta Deuel Hubbs tent, Daughters of Un ion Veterans, may take gifts for the Christmas project to the meeting Monday, Novem ber 21, at the home of Mrs. J. Coach William McKibbin was nar rator. Dr. Florian J. Shasky, pres ident, led a discussion on fund raising. Mrs. David Bergstrom read a report on the recent executive committee meeting. Sister Shawn Marie's fresh man B class won the roonrt count award. Refreshments were served by Mrs. Bryan Dibble, Mrs. Robert S. Ashen brener and Mrs. Chester Lew- andowski, The club's next meeting will be at 8 p.m. December 21 at St. Mary's school. The group earlier saw the pictures taken by Mr. Gregory on the Appalachian trail when he and a colleague walked 2,000 miles from Georgia to Maine. Dr. Frank Roberts, leader of the group asked lilm Japan is Topic For College Club Hugh Simpson, director of Information at Southern Ore gon college, spoke on the his tory and philosophy of Japa nese songs at a Saturday meeting of the College Wom en's Club of the Rogue River valley. Mr. Simpson, who became Interested in Japanese history while stationed in Japan with the U.S. Army, also sang some of the songs in Japa nese. Refreshments were served by Mrs. J. B. Smith, social chairman, assisted by Mrs. Ray K. Bailey, Mrs. Otis Swisher and Mrs, Marshall Sweet. Hostesses were Mrs. Olen Arnspiger and Mrs. W. E. Hasklns.
