Council Conducts Routine Business in Short Time
The Medford city council
laat night, faced with routine
business only, concluded its
regular meeting in just 12
minutes, it probably is
record.
- There were no public hear
ings or controversial issues to
take up the council's time last
' night. A scheduled canvass of
votes for the city election did
,not materialize as the official
vote has not yet been tabulat
ed by the county.
' Most of last night's action
dealt with street improve
ments and water mains. The
council also issued calls for
several public hearings.
Action Deferred
Action was deferred on a
proposal from the Crater
Lions club to install benches
at various bus stops through
out the city. It was pointed
out that the council's execu
tive committee has not yet
studied the proposal.
The council indicated its
approval of an amendment to
an agreement with Foster and
Kleiser billboard company for
the maintenance of a city bill
board on airport property.
Under the amendment, the
company agrees to donate one
of Its four signs along Crater
Lake highway to the city in
exchange for rental privi
leges. In addition the com
pany will change this bill
board sign once a year. Under
the original agreement the
company would have changed
the billboard sign twice a
year.
A low bid of $10,151.45 was
awarded to W. H. Conrad
Construction company, Med
ford, for construction of a six
inch water main on Crest
brook rd. from Ellendale dr.
to Greenwood St., and on
Greenwood st. from Crest
brook rd. to Highland dr. .
Other Bidder
The only other bidder on
the project was M. C. Lining
er and Sons who submitted a
bid of $10,690. City Manager
Robert Duff pointed out to
the council that the lowest bid
was 18 per cent above the
engineer's estimate of $8,557.
Duff noted, however, that
it was the second time bids
had been called on the proj
ect and the water department
felt it apparently was the low
est price possible. He said,

agreement with the state high
way department for installa
tion of traffic signals on Riv
erside ave. and Central ave.
at 10th st.
Signals Necessary
It was pointed out that the
signals will be necessary
when the new 10th st. bridge
is open. The total cost of the
two signals to be erected is
$7,500. Both the city and
state will pay half.
A public hearing was called
for Dec. 15, on a request to
annex to the city an area west
of Medford. The area, con
taming about six lots, is
bounded by the city limits,
Chestnut St., Stewart ave. and
an alley midway between Mt.
Pitt and Murray sts.
The planning commission
has previously given its con
ditional approva lto the re
quest. The conditions require
a street dedication, an alley
easement, and cunstruction of
