Cina Spinardi, 8, of Merced, Calif., even shelters her duek Jrom any rain that might fall as it happily floats in her back yard birdbalh. She rescued the duek from a big black cat which was chasing it down a residential street. So far, the duck hasn't tried to run or fly away. No doubt il Is waiting until Jan. 8, the day duck hunting season ends. (UPI Tclepholo) Three Post Office Employees Honored On Retirement Here Three Medford post office employees who arc retiring were honored Monday eve ning at a dinner. More than 1H0 postal employees, retired employees and their wives attended the dinner. 1 Honored were Carriers Charles Pcttegrew and Floyd K. Lawson, and William S. Rose, assistant superintend ent of mails. ' ' ' ' . Three superior service awards were also presented employees of the Medford post office. Lawson, who lives at 1418 Eeddy ave entered the sorv- lee June . 12, 1028, under Postmaster W. J. Warner. Lawson has been on a foot route since that time, serv ing! most of Medford us a substitute, but ,for the past 30 years he has carried his. present route. He has a son, Floyd K. Lawson Jr., now working at the Medford post office. 29 Yean Service Mr. and Mrs. Pcttegrew live at 1488 Spring st. He has worked for. the post office almost 20 years. He retired ' July 31 this year after an operation. During World War 1, Pcttegrew took a war serv- lee leave from the post office to operate a dairy farm, re turning to the Medford post office in January, 1040. He carried the Medford business Glass Tested As Tools for Doctors, Boston (Science Service) - Tiny bundles of glass or plas tic fibers that will conduct light arc being tested as new tools for doctors to use in medical examinations. Drs. J. H. Hctt and' L. E. Curtiss of the American Cys toscope Makers Inc., Pelham, N. Y., reported to the Amer ican Optical society meeting here that flexible fibers have been used to carry Images In a duodenoseope and a ureter , scope. The duodenoseope is 34 i inches long, with a diameter a little less than half an inch. The ureterscopc is 30 Inches long, with a diameter of one seventh of an inch. A flexible bronchoscope and eolorscope using fibers are In design stages, they re ported. Use of glass or plastic fiber "ropes" gives instru ments for medical examina tion that eliminate "blind re gions" caused by curves in body organs. In November, 1057, he was promoted to foreman of mails, and in May, 1050 was promoted to assistant su perintendent of mails. He has held that position since. Mrs. Rose is also familiar with post office work, and is a substitute rural route car rier at the Medford post of fice. All three were presented a cash gift from fellow em ployees. Carrier Jack Lynch also presented each with a "good luck token," a Hilded horseshoe bedecked witli rib bon. Three superior accomplish ment awards were presented employees of the Medford post office during the program. Clerks Boyd C. Kline and Claude B. Allen were pre sented with lapel pins indi cating superior service over the years, and Carrier Virgil Swanson was presented with a lapel pin and a check for $50 for his outstanding serv ice as a carrier. The awards were made from the reglonul office in Portland, signed by Samuel G. Swartz, regional director Fire Restrictions Lifted in Forest Yreka - Camp fire restric tions In the Klamath National forest were removed this week, according to Forest Su pervisor C. A. Yates. The restrictions were re moved effective Nov. 14. The removal allows camp fires on national forest hinds without permits and lifts all restric tions on smoking within the national forest. Yates urged all people using the forest to practice normal care with fire since prolonged drying periods may occur at any time. He also cautioned thai California stale law re quires Hint burning permits be obtained before burning slash and other concentrations of debris on any brush, tim ber or grass covered lands until Dec. 1 each year. Burning permits may he obtained from any U.S. forest service ranger station or from Calllornia division of forestry offices, Yreka, Ft.
