World-Wide Problem The problem is much worse throughout the - rest of the world where at least 60 to 100 underdeveloped nations and territories face . water short ages which in time can only be met from brackish and salt water sources. At present, according to the Harris, Upham report to in vestors, the United States leads the world in research and development on saline wa ter conversion. There are some 100 firms spending a total of about $50 million an nually on de-salting research and development. Increasing of World ben. Lyndon Johnson, now running for vice president of the United States on the Dem ocratic ticket, has expressed much interest on the subject. A Democratic victory next week could well pave the way for. increased government ex penditures on saline water conversion. Present Conversion Method The present methods of con version are membrane, freez ing, distillation and solar dis tillation. Electrodialysis,' un der the first category, is the only method developed on a commercial basis. Based on ion transfer, the process uses electric energy to separate salts and other impurities that ionize and become elec trically charged when dis solved in water. , ; By passing braklsh or high ly mineralized water be tween special plastic mem branes, the electrically charg ed impurities are moved un der the influence of the elec tric current into a waste stream. The purified water then flows out of the mem brane stack into the water main. Boa Water Used Later The report said that past experience has shown that brackish water will be used first, and sea water later in overcoming water shortages. The electrodialysis process provides the cheapest fresh water - about 15 to 20 cents per thousand gallons where a brackish water of low sa linity is available. Costs, how ever, increase with the salt content. In comparison,, most municipal water costs today vary from five cents to 40 cents per thousand gallons where fresh surface or well waters are readily available.
