The most informed Western observers in Moscow agree there is no obvious successor to Soviet Pre mier Nikita Khrushchev. Thia; possibilities are, from left, Leonid Brezhnev, 54, newly elected presi dent of the Presidium; Mikhail Suslov,. 58, high ranking Communist, and Aleksei Kirichenko, 52, member of the Presidium. The most likely succes sor to Communist China's Mao Tse Tung it Lul Shao Chi, 55, fourth from left, who holds the cere monial post of chairman (president) of Red China. British Home Secretary Richard A. Butler, 57, fifth from left, is a possibility to succeed Britain's Prime Minister Harold Macmillan. Jacques Soustelle, 48, sixth from left, figures in speculation about a suc cessor to French President Charles de Gaulle, while West Germany's minister of economics and vice chancellor, Ludwig Erhard, 63, seventh from left, is a likely candidate to succeed Chancellor Konrad Adenauer. (UPI Telephoto) Leaderships May Soon Change as Old Age Creeps Up By United Aress International Old age is creeping up on many of today's world leaders. French President Charles de Gaulle is 70, Chancellor Konrad Adenauer of West Germany is 84, Prime Minis ter Harold Macmillan of Great Britain is 66, Premier Nikita Khrushchev of Russia is 66, among the top leaders in Eu rope. In Asia, Nationalist China's Chiang Kai Shek is 72, In dia's Jawaharlal Nehru is 70, Communist China's Mao Tse Tung is 66, and Indonesia's Sukarno is a relatively young 50. In tne next decade and pos sibly sooner these men may pass along to others-through death or retirement - their mantles of leadership. Upon whose shoulders will they fall? Who are the .men whose names will make the newspaper headlines of the future? United Press International has asked its correspondents abroad to name the men most likely to succeed today's lead ers. Their reports follow: FRANCE -De Gaulle is a man without an obvious fu ture successor. Many French men are seriously concerned that his departure might be followed quickly by a mili tary coup led by generals or a right-wing coup aimed at bringing to power Jacques Soustelle, 48, a longtime De Gaulle supporter who broke with the general last February because of his policy of con' cessions to the Algerian Mos lem rebels. The French cabi net is largely composed of "technicians," among them Premier Michel D e b r e, 48, Foreign Minister Couve de Murville, 53, and' Finance Minister Wilfred Baumgart ner, 58. None of them seems a likely successor. The only politician who might have the prestige to succeed De Gaulle is former finance minister An toine Pinay, but he already is 69. , GREAT BRITAIN - Top candidate to succeed Prime Minister Harold Macmillan is Home Secretary Richard A. Butler, 57. He is also chair man of the Conservative par ty and leader of Commons, making him clearly the sec ond most powerful man in Britain after Macmillan. There have been rumors late ly that Macmillan himself fa vors Chancellor of the Ex chequer Selwyn Lloyd, 56, who worked in great harmony with him for more than five years as foreign secretary. An other possibility is Colonial Secretary Iain MacLeod, 46, a rising star in the Conservative camp. Also among the con tenders is Lord Privy Seal Ed ward Heath, 44.. Adenau er's own attitude, his confi dants say, is thaf he refuses to designate Erhard formally as his successor, but if their party, the Christian Demo crats, want him, Adenauer is agreeable. Other party lead ers believe that if the chancel lory became vacant during a period of high East-West ten sion some tougher man such as Defense Minister Franz Jo sef Strauss 45, would be Ade nauer's successor. Adenauer's chief opponent for power is Socialist Willy Brandt, mayor of West Berlin. But with the Christian Democrats control ling an absolute majority in the lower house of parliament, Brandt could succeed Adenau er only by defeating him in next year's general election. RUSSIA-The most inform ed Western observers in Mos cow and European capitals are agreed there is no obvious suc cessor to Khrushchev. Until early this year Aleksei Kir ichenko, 52, seemed an heir apparent. A Ukrainian like Khrushchev, he was picked by Nikita for roles that seemed to make him the Premier's righthand man. But he was sacked in January among some Western speculation Khrushchev thought he was becoming too powerful. An other possible was Frol Kos lov, 52, who until last May was First Deputy Premier. In last May's reshuffle, he lost his government post but was made one of the secretaries of the powerful party secretariat. While some believed this a promotion and a move design ed to give him party training, others have interpreted his shift as a move to take him out of the ranks of possible successors to Khrushchev. Two other possibles are: 1. Mikhail Suslov, 58, who has been much in the background and may not have enough ex perience for the job, and 2. Leonid Brezshnev, 54, newly appointed President. NATIONALIST CHINA -The most likely successor to Chiang is retired army Gen eral Chen Cheng, 63, vice president since 1954 and con current prime minister since 1958. He is considered to be the hand-picked heir of the Generalissimo, although an other possibility is Chiang's elder son, Gen. Ghiang Ching Kuo, 50, Russian-educated and married to a Russian woman. There are indications the Gen eralissimo does not favor his son as ruler for fear of imply ing the founding of a new dy nasty, but there is a possibility he could take over if both Foreign Language Workshop Held Discussion of the latest teaching devices and methods of teaching foreign languages were emphasized at a foreign language workshop recently at.Hcdrick Junior High school. INDIA - A thin ascetic from Bombay who dislikes alcohol and Communists is the current favorite to replace Nehru. Time will be the deciding fac tor, and political experts say Finance Minister Morarji Ranchhodji Desai, 64, will be the next premier providing he gets a chance during the next two or three years. The ques tion is how long Nehru, who appears to be slowing down, will remain in office. If he retains office for . any great length of time, Desai is likely lo be by-passed for Food and Agriculture Minister S. K. Pa til, 60. COMMUNIST CHINA -Mao Tse Tung's continued leader ship of Red China seems cer tain until he dies. But there is no certainty about a succes sor. On the basis of present authirity and position, Liu Shao Chi, 55, is the best bet. Liu holds the largely ceremo nial post of chairman (presi dent) of Red China, but his far more important status is as first vice chairman of the Communist party's centra committee. Against him is a total lack of personality, and he has stayed In the back ground as an organizer. Ar rayed against Liu as potential candidates are Premier Chou En Lai, 64, who has had more experience than any other Chinese Communist official in dealing with foreign powers; Marshal Lin Piao, 52, who presumably could count on army support; and Teng Hsia Ping, 60, the able, but unpop ular, secretary general of the central committee.
