I am sorrjj but I cannot guess. The other day I saw an old man wh8 was very fortunate. One afternoon he had a lit tle stroke in which he felt woozy and dizzy and suspect ed that he might die any min ute. Then, half of his tongue began to burn violently. But in half an hour all his symp toms were gone, and he says he has had no trouble since, A high percentage of little strokes clear up quick ly in this way. Many of them leave' a burning tongue. I wish I knew some treatment for these tongues, but I don't know of any. Sometimes, in addition to the burning, the person has a foul or nasty or metallic taste in the mouth. This also is due to an injury to a little center in the brain. The reason people can see nothing on the tongue is that the disease is not there; It is up in the brain. Curious Medico-Legal Decisions As I probably will keep re marking in this column, to day I am constantly being distressed on hearing of cases in which a person sues; not because the physician was un skillful or careless or unsuc cessful but, apparently, be cause nowadays it is the habit to sue doctors: I was' just reading about a man who has been awarded- $17,500 dam ages because, after a success ful hysterectomy,' his wife developed the usual symp toms of menopause. Because this happens so commonly after a hysterectomy that it is "to be expected," It is hard to imagine how a man could sue and then be awarded damages. Obviously, If this sort of thing is to go on in many courts, thousands of surgeons are going to become so reluctant and afraid to per form hysterectomies that they may allow a number of wom en to die of cancer untreat ed. And then, of course, they can be sued for negligence, and the husbands can be awarded large damages! ... The Council reports on problems that have been deait with by responsible agencies and counselor!. Marie C.-Since his retire ment he sits around in a daze, Albert C.-Her nagging is no help. I'm deciding what to do. Marie C.-My husband is 67 and we've been married 39 years. Our two sons are mar ried and live in distant cities. We have seven grandchildren. The problem is that my hus band retired two years ago and doesn't know what to do with himself. y To make matters worse, I'm not at all ready to retire my self, I'm 59 and have a part- time job I adore, I sell mil linery in a high-fashion 'shop, and I meet such lovely peo ple. But at first I took time out to be his companion on a few trips and on long visits to the children. Last year we spent ten weeks on. a trip to Europe. But now what? I feel guilty running off and leaving him just sitting there watching television. Should I quit my job and stay home to play cards with him and go to the park and feed the squirrels? There s no money problem It's just that I wish he'd find a real Interest to occupy him the way my work fascinates me, ... Albert C.-For over 40 years I worked hard selling insur ance. That's onet hing I know well. Now that I've retired, I just want' to loaf and my wife won't let me. It bothers her. Three Accidents Reported to Police Three minor traffic acci dents were reported to Med ford police Thursday, none of them resulting in any re ported injuries. Police cited Lillian Gert rude Keeling, 64, Gold Hill, for an improper left turn af ter the vehicle she was op erating collided with a car operated by Audree Lee Note, 31, of 1355 Hollywood ave The accident occurred about 12:16 p.m. on West Main st at its Intersection 'with Mis tletoe st, Another accident occurred about 2:25 p.m. at the inter section of Court st. and Mc- Andrews rd, when cars oper ated by Gordon Dewainc Lewis, 30, Grants Pass, and Orma James Wilson, 64, of 1022 Stevens st. collided causing minor damage to both vehicles. No citations were issued. A stuck gas pedal caused a car operated by Ernest Bliss Devoe, 70, of 12 Glen Oak court, to collide with the rear of a car operated by Henry Albert Kantor, 37, of route 3, Medford, and then crash Into a stop sign at the inter section of Sixth and Bartlctt sts. about 4:53 p.m., accord ing . to city police. I still haven't had my fill of just doing nothing. The other afternoon I felt like seeing a matinee. I hate going places alone. I thought In my latter years I'd have my wife at my side as a pal and companion. But no. She'd rather be with those empty- headed primping customers. If it bothers her having me around all the time, it's just too bad about her. It's my home, too, she'd better re member. e e The Councili We sense a certain edginess on both sides here which indicates that neither Mr. nor Mrs. C. is sure of being right and there fore each is unduly defen sive. Surprisingly, that's a good omen for change. There's no reason for Marie to feel guilty about contin uing In a pursuit she enjoys. Marriage, from beginning to end, is meant to be a mutual ly enriching and fulfilling framework for living. One partner, self-pampering and pettish, cannot arbitrarily turn marriage into a prison It seems that Marie has gone as far as she can to solve Albert's retirement dilemma, From here on anything she says is -or sounds like -nag ging. Her next move must depend on Albert. The question is, will he move? And when? His trance -like existence suggests that he s in the throes of plain old jitters, the kind that seize a motorist when he faces a five- way intersection and the cars behind him are honking wild ly. In his third year of "loaf ing" we wonder whether he likes it as much as he claims. One thing is certain, Albert needs a program, even if sit ting at the television set for hours is part of it. And his program must include some communication ;with his fel low man and some outgoing activity, lest his physical, men tal and emotional facilities shrival. And there are many possibilities! Besides joining a club or taking a course, there are , new hob bles to explore, the hospital ized and disabled to serve, important "causes" to pro mote. How about Albert shar ing the "one thing" he knws well and giving a course in Insurance to the housewives and teenagers of his church? And, of course, there s al ways the possibility of return ing to work on a reduced scale. When Albert "finds him self" in this new context, we feel he'll find Marie, too, right there beside him, ready to root for his second chapter. But he must outline it him self. Then she can prove her self a loving collaborator. (Copyright 1960, General Features Corp.) Anglers and Speed Enthusiasts Tangle Over Speed By A. ROBERT SMITH Mail Tribune Washington Correspondent Washington (Special)-"The new popularity of high pow ered boats has brought about near pitched battles as anglers and speed en thusiasts have tangled. Swimmers, high powered boats, skin divers and tfishermen simply won't mix." This, ex- Bnbt- smith plained Fran cis W. Sargent, is one of the growing problems of outdoor recreation which confronts a presidential commission that has waded in search of a so lution. Whoever wins the presiden tial election is going to have to help shape the future of recreation development throughout the country, for the Outdoor Recreation Re sources Review Commission will give the new chief ex ecutive its recommendations next year. Sargent, executive director of the commission, said the bipartisan group hopes to pre sent an overall recreation pol icy to guide the federal gov ernment, and the' local and state agencies as well, includ ing private industry. Neuberger'i Advice But the agency is not sim ply acting as a jurisdictional arbitrator to ascertain who should do what in the grow ing recreation facilities field, it is using as its focal point the advice of the late Sen. Richard L. Neuberger - find out what the people want in the way of outdoor recreation facilities. Neuberger was one of the four Democratic members of Congress who are members of the commission. After his death Sen. Henry M, Jackson (D-Wash.) took his place. Rep. Al Ullman (D-Ore.) is a mem ber. There are, in addition. four Republican congressional members and six members ap pointed from private life by President Eisenhower plus Laurence S. Rockefeller, chairman. To find out what the peo ple want, the commission has contracted with the Census Bureau to obtain a special sampling of opinion from 16, 000 households on their recre tion likes, dislikes, travel habits, etc. The sampling is being divided into quarters for seasonal purposes. The commission must make projections as to what the re creation demands of the na tion will be in 1975 and the year 2000. And It must recom mend how these needs can be met. "This will be difficult to forecast," Sargent conceded, noting that the current boat ing boom and skin diving fad could hardly have been an ticipated. At one lake in New Jersey, said Sargent, the conflict be tween water sports has be come so acute that a traffic director has been appointed. At other places he said alter nate days are set aside for swimmers and for boaters and water skiers. It won't be a federal func tion to write a power boat preference clause, or any thing of the sort, but the com mission is driving toward some policy guide by which new recreation resources can be found to meet the demands of a growing population with an increasing leisure time on a contracting mass of open land space, One idea that Sargent has developed is for possibly en couraging the use of marginal farmland for certain outdoor sports on, a fee basis which would open new areas to urban dwellers and provide a "recreation cash crop" for the farmer. Fishing, hunting, camping, various- winter sports are possibilities. EDITOR-PUBLISHER DIES Tampa, Fla. -fllPD- David E.
