B 3 UPI Board Names Danny Murtaugh NL Coach of Year New York - IUPD - Danny Murtaugh, who made it the hard way both as a player and a manager, was named National league manager of the year today for leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to their first pennant in 33 years. Murtaugh, 43, was named by the United Press Interna tional's board of 24 National league experts. Eighteen of the experts voted for Mur taugh with the other six votes going to Solly Hemus of the St. Louis Cardinals. American League Owners Open Important Session By STEVE SNIDER New York - IUPD - Ameri can league clubowners faced the possibility of 'round the ' clock sessions when they met today to try to solve the knot ty problem of expansion. There was a strong possi bility that Minneapolis - St. Paul ' and Dallas-Fort Worth would be added to make the circuit a 10-team league. But the American league expan sion problem is complicated by a powerful bid by Toronto interests as well as by the possibility of internal realign ment. . "Nobody really knows what Is going to happen," commeht- BALDWIN GETS CALL Los Angeles -IUPD- Veteran center Harry Baldwin will get the starting call over Ron Hull Saturday night for the UCLA Bruins in their game against North Carolina State. Coach Bill Barnes made the an nouncement Tuesday, explain ing that Hull started for the Bruins last week. The UCLA team practiced defensive scrimmage Tuesday and work ed on its own passing game. WILLAMETTE EIGHTH Kansas City -IUPD- Southern Illinois university has edged ahead of Lenoir Rhyne in the weekly National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) football poll. Murtaugh, who climaxed the season by leading the Pi rates to victory over the New York Yankees hi the World Series, joined the Philadelphia Phillies in 1941. His top claims to fame during h i s playing career were leading the National league with 18 stolen bases in 1941 and lead ing second baseman in double plays in 1948. Hemus was in danger of losing his job at the start of the season but wound up lead ing the Cardinals to a sur prising third-place finish. ed AL president Joe Cronin. The Hornet's (2-2) are' the No. 3 team in Rogue league standings. Rogue River (0-4) is in the cellar. Coach Bob Sandgren said that the RR Chieftains will be without the services this week of fullback Larry Wright. He is injured. The mentor re ported that other than for a few bumps and bruises other squad members are in fine shape. Sandgren expressed disap pointment in Rogue River de fense against Illinois Valley last week. It gave up two touchdowns in the closing minutes which lost the game, The Chiefs are working hard on defense and will try to keep the mistakes from occur ring against the Hornets. Much attention is directed at stopping the potent Hornet passing attack. Possible RR starters for the final game are Ron Laws and Lanny Parsons, ends; Steve Simer and Theron Slhiet tackles: Phil Archer and Karl Bowen, guards;; Terry Gail, center, and Dick Mtddlelon, Jeff LeRoy, Ken Bailey and Frank Palmerton, backs. Playing their last football game for the Chieftains will be Laws, Mai Lynch, Arcner, Bowen, Gail, LeRoy and Laurie McGaurvie. Hockey Results NATIONAL XEAGUE United Press International The Chicago Black Hawks' most decisive victory over the Montreal Canadiens in six years today posed the question of what's wrong with Vezina Trophy-winning goalie Jac ques Plante. The Black Hawks unloaded on Plante with an 8-4 triumph Tuesday night that lifted them into first place in the Nation al Hockey league, but the really eye-opening statistic in the league is the number of goals allowed by Plante. WESTERN LEAGUE Edmonton, Alta. -IUPD- The Portland Buckaroos, seeking their second win of the West ern league season, meet Ed monton here tonight. In Tuesday night's only game Vancouver won its fourth straight, 3-2 over Win nipeg. , More Funds Due if Measure 15 OrCd Portland Milo K. Mclver, chairman of the Oregon state highway commission, stated today that if billboard control measure, No. 15, passes on Nov. 8, Oregon will receive an additional $500,000 to $800,000 in federal highway construction funds within the next five years. The federal government now pays 92 per cent of. the cost of Oregon's interstate freeway system (Highways 99 and 30), and will pay 92'4 per cent of construction costs if Measure 15 passes, Mclver noted. Mclver pointed out that Measure 15, in his opinion, does meet requirements of the national standards estab lished by Congress. Commenting on Mclver's statements, Rudie Wilhelm Jr. 'of Portland, chairman of the Highway Protection Com mittee, said "We are pleased to have the air cleared on this point. The billboard in dustry, in its radio, television and brochure advertising. has been implying or flatly stating that Measure 15 falls short of obliging the national standards, and it has neglect ed to point out that the state will receive this more than half-million dollar bonus." Upper Half of Ashland Stand Open Admission On Friday The whole, upper half of the grandstand at the Ash land high football field will be open to general admission for the M e d f o r d-Ashland Southern Oregon conference contest Friday night, Ashland Vice-Principal Oscar Silver reported today. This seating will be open on a first come, first served basis. Silver said effort will be made to seat as many in Phoenix Primes for Eagle Point Phoenix-Phoenix high grid- sters were to divide their practice time about equally between defense and offense today as they tuned for Fri day night's deciding tangle in the Rogue league football chase. The Pirates play at Eagle Point on Friday night. Each club enters the ruckus with a 4-0 record. The contest will wrap up Rogue league slates for each. , .. Defense mostly got the at tention of the Buccaneers on Monday and time was divided between offense and defense yesterday. A lot of time was spent at both workouts on the fundamentals of blocking and tackling. The Pirates de fense is aimed at halting an EP T and single wing attack. Conditioning Coach Jack Woodward said that, barring any further in jury or sickness, Phoenix will have everybody ready to go. He has worked the Pirates hard on conditioning. In previous Rogue league action Phoenix has defeated Illinois Valley 41 to 7, Hen ley 13 to 6, Rogue River 20 to 0 and Glendale 41 to 6. Eagle Point won 32 to 7 from Illinois Valley, 12 to 7 from Henley, 26 to 0 from Rogue River and 32 to 13 from Glen dale. The Pirates have also beat en Brookings 45 to 13 and Mt. Shasta, Calif., 39 to 6. Their only loss was 32 to 0 to Ashland. Before hitting the victory trail in the confer ence, Eagle Point dropped de cisions of 12 to 0 to the Mod ford reserves, 20 to 0 to Cra ter and 7 to 0 to Yreka, Calif. UCLA Tops Statistics San Francisco -IUPD- UCLA which whipped Stanford 28-6 Saturday night, has vaulted into the lead in four of six statistical departments among the Big Five conference. Coach Bill Barnes' gridders have averaged 329 yards per game in total offense while holding the foe to 235 yards to lead in defense. The Bruins have also passed 159 yards per contest and have only yielded 92 yards per game through the airlanes. Washington leads in both rushing offense and defense The Huskies have averaged 228 yards per game rushing while surrendering 103. The Huskies also have the best record among conference teams, 5-1. UCLA is 2-1-1; USC is 2-3; Cal 0-5-1, and Stanford 0-6. Ocean Wave Batters Rockaway Houses Rockaway, Ore. - IUPD i- The Pacific ocean kicked up its heels for the first time this fall Tuesday, and a freak wave knocked three houses off their foundations. One of them was left perched on railroad tracks. - One of the homes damaged by the high wave was a per manent residence and the oth er two are summer homes. Sand, logs and other debris were piled into the town's streets. Mr .and Mrs. George Harri- man, who own the permanent residence, were watching the breakers through a picture window when a wave broke through the window, leaving water and debris in the house. Mrs. Harriman was treated for a cut hip. A summer cottage was driven onto Southern Pacific railroad tracks.. The Coast Guard said the high wave rode in on the crest of an 8.2 foot tide. Auto Crash Victim Dies in Portland Portland IUPD Daniel Du vall, 29, Portland, one of four persons critically injured in a two-car crash a mile north of Clackamas Monday night, died at St. Vincent hospital here early today. Three others hurt in the crash remained in serious con dition here and at Oregon City. v To General the stand as possible. Reserve seats are sold out for the game. Spiegelbere reported some doubling up on the Tornado squad because of a defensive depth problem; Some players are learning two defensive positions. Said the grid mentor, "I feel it will be a real tough battle. I hope we can get the kids up for it. Ashland has had its off nights this season but has played some brilliant football, too. It is reported especially pointing for the Black Tor nado, which is favored in the conflict. v The Grizzlies enter the fracas with a 1-1 record in the loop. They defeated Klam ath Falls 20 to 12 and lost to Grants Pass by the same score. Medford, 2-0 in the league thumped Klamath 49 to 6 and Crater 48 to 6. Ash land won from Crater 27 to 26 in a mix which did not count in the standings. Some of the Black Tornado players well remember the last trip to Ashland for a var sity grid scrap-in 1958. Heav ily favored Medford finally won 27 to 0 but the fray after three full quarters was dead locked at 0 to 0. St. Mary's 8th Defeats Talent John Batzer chucked three touchdown passes yesterday as the St. Mary's of Medford eighth grade defeated Talent 24 to 16. , Two of the scoring aerials were to Randy Corlis and one to Ray Richter. Ron Roberts circled end for the other marker. Jim Consbruck ran a kickoff back for 90 yards for one Talent tally. Tycksen ran over the other, Talent got two points on a safety when SM's Roberts, back to punt, got a bad pass from center and was tackled in the end zone. . i McKEEVER DRILLS Los Angeles -IUPD- Mike Mc Keever might get to see some action against Stanford for the University of Southern California team. McKeever, ailing for nearly three weeks with fits of dizziness and nausea, got in his second work out Tuesday and coach John McKay was hopeful the star guard would feel well enough to play this week end. McKay drilled the Trojans Tuesday on offense against Stanford's defense. Pioneer Section of Highway 20 Opened Salem -IUPD- The $1 million,' 2.5 mile long Pioneer Moun tain section of Highway 20 East of Toledo opened to traf fic at 10 a.m. today, State Highway Engineer W. C. Wil liams announced. The new route is an entire ly new alignment south of the old highway, and decreased the overall length by one mile, while greatly reducing curves, William said. Baker, who had 302 yards rushing and passing against Washington last week, has 1013 yards in six games. Grayson has rushed for 490 yards in six games. In total offense Oregon States is seventh in the na tion with 2080 yards in 367 plays and Oregon is 10th with 2022 yards in 390 plays. Ore gon ranks 10th in rushing with 1461 yards in 296 rushes. Flu Sidelines Cal Flankman Berkeley, Calif. - IUPD - Cal ifornia drilled Tuesday against the single-wing tactics of their next foe, Oregon State Tuesday. Right end John Papini miss ed practice because of the flu and is considered doubtful against the Beavers. His loss will hurt. Center Dick Carl sen, back after recovering from a knee injury, worked out Tuesday but was not up to full strength. Pullman -IUPD- Senior full back Ted Cano rejoined the ranks of Washington State's Cougars Tuesday after two weeks off, but ace halfback Keith Lincoln may miss Sat urday's game against San Jose State. SHELL Raiders Entertain EOC In Homecoming Scuffle Ashland - Homecoming and Eastern Oregon will mark the Oregon collegiate conference football finale for Southern Oregon Saturday afternoon at 1:30 when the Red Raiders meet the Mounties in an effort for second spot in the OCC. EOC has been a patsy for most of the other clubs they have met with the exception of Portland State last week when the two battled to a 6-6 tie. In OCC action before the Viking deadlock, the Moun ties were whipped by Oregon Tech 51-6 and Oregon college 34 0 in addition to losing to non-conference foes Whitman, College of Idaho, and Yakima JC. Southern Oregon with wins over PSC and OCE will still have a chance for a tie for the OCC crown if OCE can pull an upset and whip un defeated Ore Teen. After missing last week's game linemen Willie Garner and Neil Green will probably be back in action this week according to Raider mentor Al Akins. Garner is the reg ular right guard and Green the center on the ' offensive unit while Garner plays line backer on defense. Otherwise, the Raider lineup will remain the same. There are few or small injuries to mar the ros ter. After six games Al Barnes continues to dominate the Raider rushing statistics with 316 yards and a 4.9 yard per play average. Gordy Carrigan, Eldon Francis, Doyle Bran som, and John Buck are all closely bunched in the runner-up slot, Doug Olsen took over com mand of the passing depart ment with his splendid 229 yard effort against OCE last week. Olsen has run his yard age to 411 yards on 28 com pletions of 52 attempts. Olsen's prime target has been Howard Hartman, re ceiver of 24 aerials for 405 yards which have carried for five touchdowns. This also gives Hartman the scoring lead. Francis has the most dis tinguished record on the club with a perfect record in pass ing and scoring.
