They're exhibiting oil paintings which . , (UPI Telephoto) Oregon Adds Two Traffic Deaths By United Press International Oregon added two more traffic fatalities to its 1960 toll Wednesday.. The victims were Mrs. Inez Keffer, 46, ' Klamath Falls, and Ernest Cecil Baker, 76, Brownsville.. ; . Mrs. Keffer' was killed when the pickup truck she was driving went off a steep embankment and plunged into the Klamath river near the California Oregon Power Company dam. She was alone In the vehicle. Baker was killed Wednes day evening when he was struck by a log truck on Hlgli- w a y 228 - in Brownsville, James Arthur Waibel, " 20, Brownsville, the truck driver, was not cited. The two deaths brought Oregon's 1960 toll to 348, ac cording to the' State Traffic Safety Commission in Salem. Carlton Post Office Proposal Accepted Salem-flJPD-The Post Office department has accepted a proposal for construction and lease of a new post office building at Carlton, Rep. Wal ter Norblad (R-Ore.) said to day. Charles J. Ziegler of Carlton was successful bid der. Tentative completion date is next January. Morgan, Philanthropist, Dies Simcoe, Ont. - IUPII- Junius Spencer Morgan, 68, grand son of the late multi-millionaire J. Pierpont Morgan and a leading banker, philanthro pist and yachtsman in his own right, died here Wednes day night. ; Morgan, a director of the Morgan Guaranty Trust Co., died following an emergency operation for a perforated ul cer an hour after he was rushed to the hospital by boat and ambulance from Long Point park on the north shore of Lake Erie where he had been on a hunting trip. UNIONS TO MERGE Washington -UPU- The na tion's two oldest unions of post office clerks have an nounced plans to merge into a single organization under the AFL-CIO by next March 1. Smith memorial dinner in New York City): "There are some who say that the reli gious convictions of the can didates will influence the out come" of the Nov. 8 presiden tial election "more than their convictions on the issues." But "I do not think the American voter of 1980 is the same as the American voter of 1928," when New York Gov. Smith's Catholicism was a major issue. "In 1960, as never before, our enemy is loose on the world." In 1928, the people could be excused for exercis ing prejudice "but in 1960, the citizens of this country face the great question of whether freedom will not only endure ' but whether they will perish." "The American people of 1960 see the storm coming . . . I am confident that whatever their verdict, their, judgment will be based on the real is sues of our time . . . what is best for our country.". Noting that even the Wall Street Journal at one point criticized Vice President Richard M. Nixon's campaign tactics: "That's the Osserva tore Romano criticizing the Pope." Vice President Richard M. Nixon (speech to Smith dinner in New York City): "Religion should not be an Issue in the campaign. And it shall not be if Sen. Kennedy and I and our supporters and, other men of good will, will discuss the issue s." However, religion should be an issue in a presi dential campaign if one of the candidates had no faith in God, because "in these times, any man who has to lead the nation and the free world must be a man with faith faith in God faith in the rights of man." In the "great battle going on" for the hearts and minds of the peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America, it is net enough for America "to go before these people and say 'communism is bad.' We must emphasize our faith, our ideals . . . and let it appear we are helping them because we care for them." This would be "charity in its broadest sense." , Nixon (Wilmington, Del., statement): "It took a war to solve the unemployment rid dle for them" (the previous Roosevelt-Truman Democrat ic administrations) and Ken nedy's "glowing promises" of a program of full employ ment "aren't worth a plugged nickel." Morse Praises Columbia Pact Washington - HIPD - Sen. Wayne Morse, (D - Ore.), a member of the Senate sub committee on Canadian af fairs, today called the new Columbia river- agreement one of "immense importance to the Pacific Northwest." Morse, who is also a mem ber of the Senate Foreign Re lations Committee, said in a statement he would call for early hearings on the treaty when congress reconvenes in January. "Such hearings will be of special importance because we must make sure that the treaty fully protects the American taxpayers' inter ests," Morse said. He said he was "pleased that this has been approached on a non-political basis and it is my hope that it will lead to further agreements with Canada on a whole range of subjects." The agreement calling for a 10-year program for devel opment of the upper Colum bia River basin was an nounced by President Elsen hower Wednesday.
