I U Study Shows Smog Interrupts Radio And TV Signals Angeles-(Science Serv-lcc)-When temperature inver sion clamps an atmospheric lid over a city, high-frequency radio transmission from the ground to high-flying planes or missiles can be cut temporarily. The inversion layer, already notorious as a major smog factor can also interrupt ra dio contact between two land point$ in direct line of sight. The findings were reported after three years of experi ments by Prof. W. D. Hersh b e r g e r, assistant professor Richard, C. Mackey and Dr. Warren L. Flock, University of California at Los Angeles radio engineers. In 1956, the three engineers set up a transmitter on the 24th floor of the Los Angeles City hall and a receiver on top of the UCLA physics building, establishing a micro wave path 1Z.4 miles long. Transmitting at 36,000 meg acycles, they found that sig nals came in strong and clear on smogless days. But on days with temperature inversion, signals faded, at times com pletely, especially when the inversion layer was below 1,000 feet and while the sun was rising. The importance of the study lies in setting an upper frequency limit of 36,000 meg acycles for radio transmission during smoggy days. Only on frequencies below 36,000'meg acycles will communication be completely reliable. Radio engineers have a very practical interest in determin ing this upper limit. Although they can easily penetrate the inversion layer by trans mitting on lower frequencies, higher frequency transmission has an advantage because it requires a smaller receiving dish and less bulky equip ment. The experiments also show ed that microwaves are a fast er although more expensive means of fixing the height of an inversion layer, especially between 500 and 1,000 feet, than the present method of sending up balloons. 4-K NEWS Eagle Point Ranchers The Eagle Point Ranchers 4-H club held their meeting Oct. 10 in the Eagle Point vo cational agricultural build ing. There were 24 members and 9 visitors present. It was decided that we make at least two reports a year on our projects. Our next meeting will be held Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. in the Eagle Point vocational ag riculture building. Susan Harper, Reporter Central Point Beef Club The Central Point Beef 4-H club held a meeting Oct. 17 at the home of the leader, Floyd Charley. We elected of ficers. They are Nikki Ham mond, president; Carolyn Sidener, vice president; John Swartsfager, secretary; Judy Frink, reporter; George Way, sergeant at arms; and Carol , ?J orris, refreshment chair man. Our next meeting will be at the home of Carolyn Sidener at. 7:30 p.m. Nov. 21. Refresh ments were served by Mrs. Charley. Judy Frink, Reporter Merry Makers The Merry Makers 4-H club met Oct. 15 at the home of Mrs. Dwight J. Albright. Marilyn Peyton and Linda Lemley were co-hostesses for the meeting. Mrs. C. D. Lem ley and Douglas Lemley were guests. Demonstrations of how to cut designs in sandwiches weTe given. Plans were also formulated for taking pic tnrpe and nnttine them on a bulletin to be distributed to children at the hospital. The- next meeting is Oct. 22. Halloween snacks will be made at that time. Meadows Busy Beavers The September meeting of the Meadows Busy Beavers 4-H club was held at the home of Wes McDonough. Nine members and two vis itors were present. Visitors were Mr. and Mrs. Wes Mc Donough. Discussion of possible com munity projects was held. Completion of members proj ects was also discussed. Cynthia Pleasant, 'Reporter. Willing Workers Club The Willing Workers 4-H club met at the home of Mrs. J. Anhorns Oct. 11. Christmas projects were discussed. The club set Nov. IS as the date for its achieve ment night.
