Someone lettered is barely visible on the lower Von Braun Feeling of For War II By JOSEPH L. MYLER Washington-UPIJ-Dr. Wcrn her Von Braun admits to a feeling of guilt because of his role in development of the V-2 rocket, Germany's vengence weapon of World War II. This recalls a remark by Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer, director of the wartime atomic bomb laboratory at Los Alamos, ' N.M. Oppen heimer said he and the other nuclear physicists who work ed on the bomb had known sin. The feeling expressed by both men illustrates the moral dilemma with which a sci entist Is confronted when his country seeks to recruit his talents for the development of. weapons. Duty Above Reluctanct In World War II most sci entists so summoned placed duty to country above reluc tance to switch from peace ful to military employment. Von Braun, who directed Nazi Germany's Rocket cen ter at Pcenemunde, is now chief of the George C. Mar shall Space Flight Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration at Huntsvillc, Ala. The Huntsville center was established by the Army to develop rocket weapons. On July 1 NASA, dedicated to the peaceful exploration of space, took over the center and the scientific and tech nical team headed by Von Braun. Motivations Discussed Von Braun discussed the motivations which have af fected his career at a recent conference with Washington newsmen. He did not pretend to utter the final and defini tive word on the conflict be tween conscience and duty which he said had plagued him and other scientists in today's world. As a teen-ager Von Braun became fascinated by rockets as tools for exploring space. He organized a small group which sought support for its researcli projects. The Ger man Army offered that sup port. Von Braun cited the expe rience of other scientists and inventors, Including the pio neers of aviation, whose first By Jimmy Hatlo BlIT THOSE CENTURY-NOTE RUBBER-CHICKEN POLITICAL AFFAIRS""7MTS DIFFERENT! yz 1 is being erected in front of the name "Kennedy" which crossbeam. (UP-I Telephoto) Tells Guilt Role large support was military. He also drew a parallel be tween his conduct and that of the scientists who helped the United States to develop nuclear weapons. Concerning his own con science in World War II when Germany, defeated in the air, went all-out for rocket weap ons, Von Braun said: Couldn't Argue Moral Issues "I felt my country was at war and that it was no longer possible to argue moral is sues." Under pressure Von Braun joined the Nazi Party. He said this was "a bitter pill to swallow." He indicated it was one reason he led his Peene munde associates to the Amer ican side In the closing days of the war when the Rus sians were only 50 miles away. He had experienced dictatorship. Von Braun said he regret ted what the V-2 had done to noncomhatants and had a "feeling of guilt" about It. He said he does not believe a sense of duty to country. He suggested that this is the way it will be as long as men resort to war. "You shouldn't blame the scientist," Von Braun said, "for the imperfections of hu man society." Kennedy Airlift Costs Job For Man Lincoln, Neb.-IUPD-Nebras-ka State Aeronautics Director Jack Obbink was out of a job today because he gave Robert Kennedy a lift In a state-owned plane. Republican Gov. Dwlght W. Burney fired Obbink, a Demo crat, on Monday because of a flight to Kansas City the night of Sept. 24. Obbink said he had to make the trip on business and since Robert Kennedy, brother and campaign manager of Sen. John F. Kennedy, was going that way he took him along. However, Burney apaprent ly was not satisfied with the business explanation and dis missed Obbink.
