D I. celebrated their 87 and ,88 birthdays, respectively, recently. The two women were honored Sunday, October 9. The sisters married brothers at separate ceremonies in 1892. Edna and Mettie Buck Have 88, 87 Birthday Bethel To Hold Friendship Night Bethel 14. International Or- der of Job's Daughters, will observe Friendship Night at the meetine to be held Wed- nesday, October 19, at 7:30 p.m., in the Medford Masonic Temple. Invitations have been sent to all bethel members in the valley, and entertainment is Deing planned, according to Miss Carla Borough, hon ored queen. Roxy Ann HEC Slates Session Roxy Ann Home Economics club will meet Wednesday. October 19, at 8 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Ray R. Offord Sr., 3054 Roberts road. Co- hostesses will be Mrs. Byron Ellis and Mrs. J. O. Myhre. Applegate Valley - Two sis ters celebrated their octogena rian birthdays together Sun day, Mrs. Edna Buck and Mrs. Mettie Buck, who were 88 and 87 respectively. A small group gathered at Met tle's home Sunday in honor of the occasion. The two women were born In Kansas, Edna at Holton August 22, 1872, and Mettie at Blue Rapids October 10, 1873. Their parents were Jacob and Elizabeth Parks and in 1874 the Parks, family came west, traveling on the railroad by immigrant train and bringing their horses. They spent a winter at Chico, Calif., then came to Murphy, Ore., and af ter a few years took up a homestead at Sterling where the sisters attended school. Mr. Parks operated a saw- Ann .versa ry Game Scheduled An anniversary special master point game will be conducted at Riverside Bridge club Wednesday, October 19. Special guests at last Wed nesday's game were Mr. and Mrs. George Choate, formerly of Medford and now of San Jose, Calif., and Mrs. Charles Morehouse, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. WaUer Winner. High scores for north-south play were won by Mrs. Dolph Phipps and Mrs. B. B. Hughes, first; Mrs. Berg Marten and Mrs. F. E. Bowman, second; Mrs. J. P. Vachon and Mrs. M. M. Herman, third; Mrs. Sam Van Dyke and Mrs. H. J. Boyd, fourth. East - west winners were Mrs. Patricia Gilhousen and George Choate, first; Mrs. ' John Dougherty and Mrs. Glenn Harrison, second; Mrs. John Dougherty and Mrs. Glenn Harrison, second; Mrs. Fred Rehling and Mrs. J. J. Beaman, third; Mrs. Mary Trout and Mrs. Roger Smoot, fourth. mill and later moved to a ranch on Little Applegate. He was the first postmaster at Buncomb in the late 1890s. In recalling these early days the sisters say that they and Mrs. Mamie Blair of this com munity are the "last of the Sterling girls," a group of 15 girls who attended the school. The Parks girls married brothers, M. R. and Charles Buck at separate weddings in 18S2, and have lived on cattle ranches in the valley since. Edna lived in Ashland for five years during the time that her children were in high school and was active in lodge work mere. Both enjoy good health. Mettie still lives at her ranch home and Edna lives with her sons and daughter, Edna has two sons, Otis, living on the home place here, and Vern, of Colusa, Calif., and a daughter Mrs. William Heckman of Malin, Ore. A son, Ernest, died. She has three- grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Mettie, a charter member of Upper Applegate Grange, has a son, Clarence, living at home, and a daughter, Mrs Letha Clark of Medford. 1 Garden Club Meeting Set JacksonvilleThree women will give the program at the Thursday October 20, meet ing of the Jacksonville Gar den club at the Jacksonville Community hall at 1:30 p.m Mrs. Dee Hendrickson will speak on "Soil and Planting of Roses," Mrs. Lee Wright on "Gather Seed Pods While You May," and Mrs. Frank Janosky, "Song Birds of- the Area." Horticulture exhibits are invited, it was reported and anyone interested in garden ing and horticulture is invited to attend. The tea committee will be Mrs. Glenn Tuttle and Mrs. C. O. Lack. A happy gardener, Charles Taylor, Central Point (above) poses with his blue ribbon flower arrangement which he en tered in the fall flower show sponsored by Crater, Howard and Roxy Ann Garden clubs. The little straw flowers and dock,, arranged in a wooden bowl, were entered in the men only" division of the show. Extension Units Plan Open House Illinois Valley Plans for the annual Christmas open house sponsored by the Home Extension units were made at a recent meeting at the home of Mrs. Kenneth Brown, Caves highway. Mrs. Gordon Anderson and Mrs. James Cooke represent ed the Selma Rancheros; Mrs. Loyd Gilbert and Mrs. L. W. Winbolt, Deer Creek; Mrs. A. E. Sandoll and Mrs, Brown, Illinois Valley unit. The public open house has been scheduled for Novem ber 9 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the American Legion auxiliary room in Cave Junc tion. A silver tea will be served. Gifts, handicrafts and decorations as well as work ing exhibits will be on display. Visit Gold Hill Gold Hill Mr. and Mrs. John Garrison had as week end guests Mr. and Mrs. George Wlnrich, Alda, Neb., and Mr. and Mrs. Julius Buh lke, Philomath. Nebraska is the home state of the Garri sons and the Buhlkes. Mrs. Weinrich and Mrs. Garrison, who are cousins, had not seen each other for 13 years. The Garrisons took their guests for Meets for Luncheon McLeod Members of th Upper Rogue Grange Homa Economics club held a busi ness meeting and luncheon Thursday,, October 13, at the home of Mrs. George East man, Laurelhurst road. a tour of southern Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Garrison re cently moved to Gold Hill from Medford. Mrs. E. A. Bay, Ashland (above, left), was head judge for the fall flower show held by Crater, Howard and Roxy Ann Garden clubs recently in Crater High school gymnasium. Mrs. Lawrence Messal (right) is Crater club president. They admire the show's sweepstakes arrangement entered by Mrs. John Holmer, Central Point. The entry, planned for a Thanksgiving buffet, combines fruit, chrysanthemums and col ored foliage with a handmade figurine. The show was the first to be given in the valley by a combination of smaller garden clubs.
