Pay Less Drug store is the large neon sign It not only cuts down the fading problem, on top of the building and the tinted glass, but it also removes the glare from the sun. Pay Less Drug Company Was Started in WW II in Vanport The birth of Pay Less Drug was during the latter days of World War II. In the midst of Vanport, Wash., a large war-built city made to house ship yard workers, was a small drug store. 1 This small drug store was equipped with a prescription department and merchandise stocked to the ceiling. The prescription department was perpetually busy and more often than not, the merchan dise did not get a chance to be put on the shelves before it was sold. ' Typical of all wartime businesses, this was a fast moving operation. The own ers, Peyton Hawes and W. B. Armitage, were both Oregon- ians that had decided to go into business for themselves. Hired pharmacists were Noel Flynn and Hollis Birchard, also Oregonlans. Then came the big flood of 194B, which virtually washed out Vanport. Spreading Point With no more Vanport and no more drug store Pay Less Drug had one of two ways to turn - built a new store or stores or quit. This deciding factor started the spreading point of the organization. ; Hawes and Armitage invest ed in small stores in Klamath Falls, Albany and Portland. To these stores, they sent as managers Flynn and Birch ard, respectively. The Port- SCHICK SHAVER a m DON'l SHAVE TODAY! COME TO FAY lift AND TRY THt MIGHTY NM , . . . About this same time they formed a partnership with Tom Bishop, a drug salesman who had called on them at Vanport, in a store in Pasco, Wash. At the time of purchase, these stores were all small and run down that have since been built up into targe oper ations. ';. ' : ; , . The growth of Pay Less, at the beginning, , was rapid, ' Aside from the stores in Port land, Pasco, Klamath Falls and Albany, stores were start ed in Lewlston, Idaho, Pendle ton, and La Grande, all about the same time. Then Salem was added to the list. As these stores developed and grew, the organization grew. "Next was Richland, Coos Bay, The Dalles, Rose burg, Yakima, Eugene, Red ding, Corvallls and finally the Pay Less Drug in Medford. I The owners of the stores are all Oregon or Washington ; men that have dedicated their . stores to their communities to be run and respected as local owned stores. Once a man is given the management of one of these stores, he re mains in that community from then on. He buys a home, set-, ties down and becomes a definite part of the city. Voice Scrambler Prevenls Phone Eavesdropping . Washington - (Science Serv ice) - A portable electron! voice scrambler used with a standard telephone system can prevent listening In; but the cost of privacy is high. . "Security Telephones" (pat- . ent pending), used in paira and costing over $200, can assure absolute privacy even if your phone is part of a ; party-line, a series of exten- . sion phones,, or is connected to a switchboard whose oper-. ; ator is curious. , On display here at the 67th annual conference of the In ter n a tional Association of Chiefs of Police, the telephn . e security unit converts the hu man voice into incoherent jargon which cannot be un- derstood unless restored to normal speech by means of a second . security instrument. The second instrument, at tached to the earphone of the 1 i s t e n e r, unscrambles the . voice message. , An advantage of the secur ity system is that it is alwaya ready for Immediate use be cause it is transistorized and transistors do not require a warm-up period. Held By One Hand A unique feature is the handle which permits it and the telephone to be held by one hand. Because It is port able, the unit can be used on pay phones,1 private phor -a and hotel phones, without at tracting attention. No elec trical connection is required. And It can be used for long distance. ; ' V The security telephones are paired by code and only when two phones are coded alike can conversation be under stood. The system also makes it Impossible for a third pasty to Identify the voices of the speakers using it. : : : ; i . Predictions are that wide spread use of the security phones will frustrate the "party-line eavesdropper" and pre vent the company s w i t o. h board operator from her now secure title of "best - in formed." .-, WORST KILLER i St. Louis The weasel t la the most blood-thirsty killer of all North American ani mal. ,
