OREGON, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2, 1960 PAGES 1 to 8 Aunt Jemima to Visit in City Aunt Jemima, the national television pancake queen, will be in Medford Friday, Oct. 28, for the Medford Lions club pancake feed at Hedrick Jun ior High school. Proceeds of the feed will go to youth activities, accord ing to Pancake Committee Chairman Dr. Lee Mellish. While in Medford, Aunt Je mima will appear in a parade through downtown Medford grid will make appearances on the local radio and television stations. Aunt Jemima is also sched uled to make appearances at various schools in the city. Dr. Mellish said Aunt Jemima will then climax her day's activi ties by entertaining patrons of the pancake feed while they are eating. Besides Dr. Mellish, mem bers of the Lions Club Pan cake committee are Herb Seitz, assistant general chair man; Roy Elmgren, publicity chairman; Al Hontemann, ad visory sign chairman; Joe Pa tella, ticket chairman; Jim Dziamaga, food supply chair- District 6C Students Display Art Works Central Point-Five students from school in District 6C won first place awards at the 1960 Oregon State Fair Art exhibit. Fifteen other district students received recognition for their work. More than 600 entries were submitted to the exhibit. Winning first place awards were Sally Novak, Connie McDonough and Gary More, Crater High school; Gary Branch, Central Point elemen tary school; and Ellen Meade, Jewett Elementary school. The work of the five stu dents will be placed in a trav eling art exhibit, along with other first place winners, which will tour Oregon schools to show the quality of art in the state educational system. Such comments were ex pressed last week following the two-day major case crime school held at the request of the Medford city police by the federal bureau of investi gation. Following a day and a half of investigating a "case" and preserving evidence, officers served as witnesses for the prosecution during a moot courfO ; The first school of its kind held locally, it was attended by 10 law enforcement offi cers from Medford, Grants Pass, Klamath Falls, Ashland, Phoenix, Talent, Central Point, Rogue River police de partments; Oregon State po lice, Jackson county sheriff's department, Air Police at Kingsley Air Force bate, Klamath Falls' National Pffflc rwigers assigned at CrarSjJ jt Lake and OregotPcaveiQ an), ti guards at t.W Veterans Ad Jackson county circuit court number 1 with District Judge Roy Bashaw presiding. Wil liam V. Deatherage, Medford lawyer, represented the de fendants and Chief Deputy District Attorney Gerald J. Scanncll was the prosecuting attorney. IHiring the "trial," 10 wit ises testified for the prose cution and entered more than a dozen exhibits. During cross - examination errors in invQigating and the impor tance of properly identif j?ng evidence and accurate note taking by officers were noted. Lieutenant McMillan added that the schoojrpointed out the importance of officers in tepreting their field notes ac curately when writing up their reports later at the po lice station. The FBI agents commented that two lawyers and 1j judge gave willingly of their time In aid the school. Clyde C. Fichtner, Lt. Orlo W. McGee and Lt. Jack E. McMillan. Tne two agents ar rived in Medford Saturday to allow time to set up "evi dence" for the "crime" which was "rorted" Monday morning. Tjjjrty-two of the men at tending the school participat ed in the actual "case" inves tigation with the remaining observing. Ufiier the supervi sion of Lifcitenant McMillan, eight teams of officers, vary ing from 2 to 10 men, con ducted the various parts of the investigation. The teams collected evi dence at the "crime" scene, the old Anderson's Thrift Market building, 710 South Riverside ave. and on Cum mifigs rd. north of Medford where the "kidnapped" safe was found; interviewed wit nesses and suspects, and made two "arrests." The two men, "charged" witlPburglary not in a dwell ing were police officers and had been given the name of Shaky Bean and Goofy Gant. A Jackson county circuit court was made available for the "trial" with Medford lawyers for the prosecution and defense and District Judge Roy Bashaw presiding.
