CROSS COUNTRV There will be district quali fying for the first time this year for the state high school cross country meet. This pro cedure certainly should cut down the congestion which has plagued the meets in the past. Number of teams and indi viduals qualifying for state will depend on the number of schools taking part in dist rict meets. Districts in which three teams or less compete will qualify the first two in dividuals and the'-first place team.. Those with four to six teams in the district meet will qualify . the first five runners and the . top two teams. In 1 district meets of seven to nine teams, the first eight runners and top two teams will.- get state spots and, in districts with 10 or more teams entered, the first 10 men plus the first four teams go to state. Now comes this September's bulletin print-, ed in magasine style and much less bulky than the former kind. The current bulletin putt the tpotlight on football but alto tells swimming and cross country cham pionship plans, lists com mittee assignments and thowt complete tourna ment and championship meet results for Oregon preps' in the 1959-1960 school year. The OSAA has an eight man football championship program for the first time this year. EXTRA HOLES NOT NEEDED Biggest boner in the Ore gon Senior Golfers associa tion tourney here last week occurred in the first round in one of the lower flights. The particular match went 70 holes. The participants were tied at the end of 18 and went two extra. When they came in they found the match should have been over on the 16th hole with one of the men winning 3 and 2. Seems they forgot that handicaps were to apply to their match. If so, it't a rough lott to the Piratet. PAST TEAMS BETTER . We don't want to take any thing away from the terrific Medford grid aggregation. It put on a blazing display of football last Friday night. But, we did gain the opinion that the current Marshfield club, doesn't match the Buc caneer, clubs we have seen m past recent years. It could come around as the : season progresses and take -the District 5 crown again. If it does and Medford repeats in District 6, a sec ond clash between the two clubs would be in order in state quarterfinals. And, watch then for a closer game between the two schools, like last year when Medford won 39 to 21 in early season, then squeezed by the Pirates 13 to 6 in the playoffs. Of course, each club has to clear a number of hurdles and - avoid ' some potential stumbling blocks before a second meeting can occupy its thoughts. Medford last week drub bed Marshfield 34-0 after opening its season with a 38-7 win over Areata, Calif. Jefferson of Portland was ranked second and Klamath Falls moved up to third place. North Salem, which 4 Harrier Lettermen At Medford Four men who won harrier letters last fall and four otn ers who were regular track lettermen last spring are working out for cross country running at Medford High school. Coach Glenn Schiremen listed those who won letters in cross country as Bill Dahl strom, Hi Martin, Bob Mc Tntvre and Dan Jordan. The others are Bob Rix and Don Miller, half milers, Walt Avrps. hurdler, and Fred Kieth, quarter-miler. Dahlstrom and Martin were milers on the track squad and Mclntvre was a high lumper. Medford schedule includes home and home meets w.tn Ashland, Grants Pass, Crater, a district meet and the state meet in Salem. First competition is at Grants Pass on Saturday, Sept. 24. Nudists Host to Board Meeting The Siskiyou Fraternity local nudist group, was host to the fall board meeting of the Northwest Sunbathing asso ciation Sunday, Sept. 18, mem bers reported today. The association comprises Oregon. Washington, Idaho and British Columbia, and more than 60 members at tended. A new charier was issued to a club- near Spokane, Wash. The annual convention in 1961 will be with the Wil- lamstans. near Eugene, Ore. Victoria, B.C., submitted a bid for the 1962 convention. RVCC Wins Team Golf Encounter Dr. Robert Buck and Dr. N. J. Wilson paced the Rogue Valley Country club men's 'golf team Sunday as it defeat ed a Redding, Calif., team 83V2 to 30V4. They each carded one over par 73s for the days low gross honors. John Nuich had 76 for the home team Heading the Redding slrokers with an 80 gross was Clay Wolfe. Morky Armstrong and Al Davis had 83s. That is the word I bring back from the area where our 10th Mountain division made its initial attack some 16 years ago. . John scouiea tne cliff for pur routes. So successful was his work that the Germans were unaware that an attack was pending. The 500 men went up the cliff without casualty and oc cupied positions the Germans themselves had prepared. They were so confident that their stronghold could not be occupied that they slept in the villages. Guerri Basta! Job Well Don What did Skillern get as an award for his many nights of reconnaissance up the cliff and in the snow? The knowl edge of a job well done. Pick the steepest, most rugged place on the upper reaches of the Willamette Pass, and that's, what Skillern went up, in the night and in the snow Guerri Basta! I visited in the farmhouse where I slept over 16 years ago. This stone cottage over looks the bastion that was given the name "Riva Ridge." The old mother and the two sons, about my age, were still there with their families, What were their circumstan ces 16 years ago? Hungry. The Germans had lived off the land until pushed back. Discouraged by having their very ground fought over, nat urally. The two sons came with me to a point that overlooks the deep cleft that was the vil lage below and the cliff that lifted hundreds of feet above One of the sons said, ."Poom, poom, poom, Tedcschil" He pointed' to the cliff and what seemed like toy houses be low. We drove from Florence to Pistoia, up the steep moun tain roads to a mountain vil lage named Parctte Terme, then to the many hamlets that were "home" to us dur ing the war. Now Resort One of the most beautiful spots is Lizzano in Belvedere. It was in shambles 16 years ago, now a lovely mountain resort. The people are friend Tillamook Voters Approve Proposal Salem -IUP1I- Public Utility Commissioner Jonel C. Hill today complimented the vot ers of Tillamook county for what he termed "recognizing the evils of duplication of electric power facilities." Friday the voters approved a proposal caning tor tne Tillamook County Public Util ity District to purchase fa cilities of Pacific Power & Light Company in the county. Hill said that while he was not endorsing any method of solving service - duplication, his office is preparing pro- nosed legislation to "prevent future duplication and offer a vehicle for communities to solve problems of duplication wherever they may exist. The Cathedral at Pisa, of which the leaning tower in the cam plnilli is part, is much the most beautiful of those I've seen.
