CROSS COUNTRV
There will be district quali
fying for the first time this
year for the state high school
cross country meet. This pro
cedure certainly should cut
down the congestion which
has plagued the meets in the
past.
Number of teams and indi
viduals qualifying for state
will depend on the number
of schools taking part in dist
rict meets. Districts in which
three teams or less compete
will qualify the first two in
dividuals and the'-first place
team.. Those with four to six
teams in the district meet
will qualify . the first five
runners and the . top two
teams. In 1 district meets of
seven to nine teams, the first
eight runners and top two
teams will.- get state spots
and, in districts with 10 or
more teams entered, the first
10 men plus the first four
teams go to state.

one of the lower flights. The
particular match went 70
holes. The participants were
tied at the end of 18 and
went two extra. When they
came in they found the
match should have been
over on the 16th hole with
one of the men winning 3
and 2. Seems they forgot that
handicaps were to apply to
their match.

PAST TEAMS BETTER .
We don't want to take any
thing away from the terrific
Medford grid aggregation. It
put on a blazing display of
football last Friday night.
But, we did gain the opinion
that the current Marshfield
club, doesn't match the Buc
caneer, clubs we have seen m
past recent years.
It could come around as
the : season progresses and
take -the District 5 crown
again. If it does and Medford
repeats in District 6, a sec
ond clash between the two
clubs would be in order in
state quarterfinals. And,
watch then for a closer game
between the two schools, like
last year when Medford won
39 to 21 in early season, then
squeezed by the Pirates 13 to
6 in the playoffs.
Of course, each club has
to clear a number of hurdles
and - avoid ' some potential
stumbling blocks before a
second meeting can occupy
its thoughts.

Nudists Host to
Board Meeting
The Siskiyou Fraternity
local nudist group, was host to
the fall board meeting of the
Northwest Sunbathing asso
ciation Sunday, Sept. 18, mem
bers reported today.
The association comprises
Oregon. Washington, Idaho
and British Columbia, and
more than 60 members at
tended.
A new charier was issued
to a club- near Spokane,
Wash. The annual convention
in 1961 will be with the Wil-
lamstans. near Eugene, Ore.
Victoria, B.C., submitted a bid
for the 1962 convention.
The 1960 "King and Queen
who are southern Oregon res
idents, attended. The 1958
queen also was present from
Tacoma, with her - husband,
who is president of the North
west Sunbathing association.
Some of the delegates were
guests at the local camp Sat
urday night, and others stayed
at motels and in private
homes. ; '
Dinner aws served to the
guests after' which volleyball
games and swimming were
enjoyed. Many delegates were
sorry to leave southern Ore
gon climate, and said they are
anxious to return to the valley
next year, members said.

feet - at night - to start the
attack that broke the back
of the German defenses. John

The 500 men went up the
cliff without casualty and oc
cupied positions the Germans
themselves had prepared.
They were so confident that
their stronghold could not be
occupied that they slept in
the villages.

I visited in the farmhouse
where I slept over 16 years
ago. This stone cottage over
looks the bastion that was
given the name "Riva Ridge."
The old mother and the two
sons, about my age, were still
there with their families,
What were their circumstan
ces 16 years ago? Hungry.
The Germans had lived off
the land until pushed back.
Discouraged by having their
very ground fought over, nat
urally.
The two sons came with me
to a point that overlooks the
deep cleft that was the vil
lage below and the cliff that
lifted hundreds of feet above
One of the sons said, ."Poom,
poom, poom, Tedcschil" He
pointed' to the cliff and what
seemed like toy houses be
low. The remark by the son
meant 50-calibre machine gun

We drove from Florence to
Pistoia, up the steep moun
tain roads to a mountain vil
lage named Parctte Terme,
then to the many hamlets
that were "home" to us dur
ing the war.
Now Resort
One of the most beautiful
spots is Lizzano in Belvedere.
It was in shambles 16 years
ago, now a lovely mountain
resort. The people are friend

not endorsing any method of
solving service - duplication,
his office is preparing pro-
nosed legislation to "prevent

wherever they may exist.
Hill said power facilities
are duplicated now. in many
counties i n c 1 u d i n g Polk,
Marion. Hood River. Wasco,
Linn, Lane, Benton and Mult
nomah. Several other areas
are "so-threatened," he added.

We drove almost to Bolog

tiful mountain pass, where
the village of Abetonc sits in
the saddle and serves as a
ski resort for the people of
the Appenines and the city
dwellers of Florence, Pisa,
Lovornn, etc.

Speaking of Pisa, that tow
er is leaning even more. The
Cathedral at Pisa, of which
the leaning tower in the cam
plnilli is part, is much the
most beautiful of those I've
