M ,12.15-. 7-401 57-75-79-87 The Medical A)&f Is The Baby Developing Properly Often when a baby is slow in developing, the question nriscs, is something wrong? Then a children's doctor will check the child's accomplish ments, perhaps with the stand ards based on the life-long studies made at Yale by Dr. Arnold Gesell. He showed that in the first 3 weeks of life the baby lacks good control of his head. He lies with his face turned to one side, and the arm on that other side extended. His eyes follow objects only brief ly, and his face is impassive. If a toy is put into his hand it is dropped. The baby will make small throaty sounds, and will notice a noise made nearby. By 16 weeks, the child can hold his head up, with an oc casional bobbing downward; he will try to reach a rattle; he will coo, and he will smile at people. He will now lie on his back and reach up with both hands. He will take a toy and look at it. He will laugh aloud, and he will play with his hands. At 28 weeks, or around 7 months, the child will sit, learning forward. He will reach for a toy and grasp it, and he will transfer a toy from one hand to the other. He will squeal with pleasure, and he will try to put a foot in his mouth. At 40 weeks, or about 9 months, the child will sit eas ily, and he can creep; he may be able to say dada and ma ma, and perhaps one more word; he can do a few nur sery tricks. He can pull itself up to stand at the rail of his play-pen; lie can pick up a small marble, using his thumb and index finger; and lie may eat a cracker all by himself. At 52 weeks, or 1 year, he may walk with one hand held; he can put a toy cube into a cup; he had added two more words to his vocabulary, and he will try to help when he is being dressed. He will try to pile one cube on another, and he will respond when told "to give it to me." At 15 months he may be toddling alone. He will make a tower of two cubes, and he will put 6 cubes into a cup. He will have learned another 4 or 6 words; he will point; lie will express his wants, and he will throw toys on the floor. At 18 months he should be walking well and seating himself in a small chair. He can make a tower of 3 or 4 cubes. He has added 10 words, and he should have learned toilet control by day. He is chattering in his own Jargon, and lie is carrying and hugging a doll. With a crayon World Population Up 48 Million United Nations, N.Y.-OJPP-World population increased by more than 48 million persons last year, a United Nations re port showed Sunday, with 5.000 more persons being born throughout the world every hour. The 710-page U.N. demo graphic yearbook, published Sunday, showed Communist China to be the country with the greatest population, 609 million inhabitants. Second was India with 403 million, with Russia in third place with 200 million and the United States fourth with 178 million. He can build a tower of 6 or 7 cubes, and with a crayon he can imitate a circular scribble. He is now joining 2 or 3 words, and he can name from 3 to 5 pictures of things. He will ask for the toilet during the day, and will put his doll to bed. At 3 years the child is rid ing a tricycle; he is making sentences, and he can tell his name and sex. He feeds him self well; he puts on his socks, and he can unbutton his clothes. As Dr. Gesell said, small deviations from these stand ards do not mean that the child is abnormal.
