o TUESDAY, AUGUST 30, 1960 MEDTOHD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFOM9, m 6 Out-Of-Valley Wednesday in Not long after sunrise on Wednesday morning a four some of men will start out from No. 1 tee and launch a day of golf at Rogue Valley Country club that may last into the sunset or longer. The occasion will be the final day of qualifying for the 32nd annual Southern Oregon Championship, a Labor Day holiday traditional event at the popular Medford links. Matches in the tourney open on Thursday with finals in men's, senior men's and ladies divisions on the legal holiday, Monday, Sept. 5. Golfers from outside the Rogue river valley are to have their qualifying rounds to morrow. Leading off the pa rade of divoters around the 18-hole layout will be Melvin Miller, Menlo Park, Calif.; Ray Flower, Sonoma, Calif., Wilyred Jossy, Portland Golf club, and Dennis McManus, Eureka, Calif. Their tee off time is 6 a.m. Players in mostly foursomes will take to the links every seven minutes after that ex cept for an 11-minute break at the end of each hour. , Locals Qualifying Rogue Valley Country club members and other entrants from the valley area trying for the championship flights in the three divisions were qualifying today, along with players from outside the Rogue valley who so wished. High handicappers of Jackson and Josephine counties quali fied from Aug. 21 through yes terday. This advance play was aimed at making the links less congested for Wednesday heavy play. Galleryites on Wednesday will have their eyes on at least three men's foursomes in which top contenders are tour ing. One with a 10:42 tee off time lists Ed Kovacovich, Eu reka, Calif., George Cicrich, Eastmoreland, Portland, Gene Maidment, Colwood, Portland, and Sam Cavallio, Cohunbia Edgewater - Portland. Kovaco vich is a perennial contender, Cicrich has been a medalist here and Maidment is a scratch (no-handicap) player. Atkinson at 1:21 p.m. Two other scratch players, Phil Underwood, Waverly, and Charles Siver, Columbia Edgewater, go out at noon with Jon Sivertson, Tacoma, Wash., and Jim Snider, ex Medford resident, another C-E man. Three-times South ern Oregon and state champ Bob Atkinson, Portland Golf club, is slated to tee off at 1:21 p.m. with Louis Stafford, Bill Wittenberg and Dick Yost, all of C-E. Stafford is an ex-National Public Links final ist and Wittenberg golfed for Willamette university. Whether Yost will go out with the other three is a ques tion. He qualified for the Southern Oregon yesterday by declaring his first 18 holes (which turned out to be a 76) in National Amateur qualify ing in Portland but might use his Wednesday spot here as a chance for practice play. Bob Prall, Salem, defending men's champ has a 2:35 p.m. starting time. He has the op tion of taking No. 2 seeded position rather than tak ing part in qualifying play. Miss Betty Martin, Longview, Wash., 1959 women's winner, will take her seeded place. Women Slated Miss June Robinson, Al bany, winner in the Oregon Coast tourney earlier this summer, has a 8:49 a.m. start ing time with Mrs. Marilyn Leggett, Eastmoreland, Miss Mary Pat Moty, Bend and Mrs. Oric Johannson, Coos Bay. Miss Shirley Siegmund, We wish to thank the People of Medford Ashland area for your patronage during the 1960 season. Eugene, ex-SO medalist, and runner-up to Miss Robinson in the Oregon Coast, goes out at 7:14 a.m. With her are to be Mrs. Raymond Scott, Eastmoreland, Miss Linda An derson, Olympia, Wash., and Mrs. Glen Scharback, Oswego. Mrs. Scott has been a leading ladies' contender in numerous Southern Oregon meets. Miss Anderson, was a Pacific North west amateur semi-finalist this year. A 7:35 a.m. tee off is shown from Mrs. Tom Harrison, Waverly, 1960 Pacific North west Amateur finalist. Mrs. Ed Wheelock, perennially in the running, will start her qualifying round at 8:21 a.m. Jack Mattison, a scratch golfer from Eugene, goes out at 11:21 a.m. and John Kerr, Eugene, 1959 prep all-stater, at 2:28 p.m. Kerr, ex-St. Mary's high of Medford, did his prep golfing for St. Fran cis of Eugene. Biggest Field The Southern Oregon tour nament field of 423, biggest in history, lists 272 men, 55 senior men and 96 ladies. Sixty-four low scoring men in qualifying play will make the championship flight. In ladies' and seniors divisions, title flights will be of 16 play ers each. There will be 14 other low er flights of 16 men each for men. M e n's championship flight first round losers drop into a 32-man first flight and losers in the other flights go into consolation play. Women will start with six and senior men with four flights of play with first round losers falling into odd numbered flights for second round action. Some of the play in men's and women's lower flights will be at Oak Knoll Golf course at Ashland because Rogue Valley, with the huge entry, cannot handle the traf fic until the fields are nar rowed down. Ron Caperna, Rogue Valley pro, who with his staff is in the midst of a busy week, has expressed the opinion that par ticipants will have to shoot 77s or 78s or better to make the men's championship flight.
