WILSON United Press International Houston, Tex. - (UPD - The Houston Oilers of the Ameri can Football league are as unpredictable as one of owner Bud Adams' wildcat wells. .... The team could turn out to be a real scoring gusher. Or, despite a highly publi cized backfield, the blue and white Texas team could be come a red-ink duster. Quarterback George Blan da, a veteran of 10 years with the Chicago Bears, is the man the Oilers are counting on to crank up the offense. At 32, Blanda still has several good seasons in prospect and is the most experienced field leader in the new league. Cannon Highest Paid But the highest paid man on the team is halfback Billy Cannon, who signed a pludh three-year contract for $100, 000 and business benefits un der the goal posts after the last Sugar Bowl game. Defensive platoon standouts are tackle Jerry Helluin of Tulane, playing his ninth pro season; and linebackers Den nis Morris of Oklahoma, Hugh Pitts of TCU and Hall Whitley of Texas A&I. PETERSEN UPI Sports Editor Rome -IUP1)- The 1960 Olym pic games open Thursday and all is not the peace and love thy neighbor spirit that this greatest competition of the world is supposed to produce. The only positive evidence of "harmony" was the closed door re-election of Avery Brundage as president of the International Olympic com mittee (IOC). And even here there was a movement by the Communist bloc to oust the 72-year Chi cagoan who has devoted much of his life and a goodly por tion of his fortune to the ideals of the Olympics and amateur sport. But the stop Brundage move fell apart and in the end one-and-all banded together in the true Olympic spirit to make his election unanimous. There were some brushes in the cool war, mostly in ternal. For instance: -The U.S. women tracksters were in a huff over an order to quit jitterbugging and start practicing. They also were none too pleased with an edict instructing them to wear the official Olympic dress on all occasions-especially in view of the relaxed dress bermuda shorts and slacks of other gal competitors. -The U. S. female canoe team reported that the Rus sians had been tailing them in motorboats on Lake Al bano during practice sessions "and know our times better than we do." -Emil Zatopek, Czechoslo vakia's triple distance winner at Helsinki in 1952, reported that a fellow Iron Curtain country - Russia-had suffered "serious relapses" and would find the going tough in win ning the mythical team cham pionship. The Russians con firmed this in appraising their track and field possibilities four gold medals, three of them in women's events. -The Russians lowered an Oldtimers Hold Spotlight at Tennis Tourney Chestnut Hill, Mass. -WPD-Oldtimers held the spotlight in third-round play today of the 80th annual National Dou bles Championships on the grass courts of the Longwood Cricket club. One of the feature matches pitted' veterans Gardnar Mal loy and Billy Talbert against defending champion Neale Fraser and Roy Emerson of Australia. Malloy, the 47-year-old Miami, Fla., businessman and former U.S. Davis Cup coach, and Talbert, nearly 42, were attempting to sidetrack the top foreign doubles team and recapture past glories. The Aussies were making their first grass court appear ance this week since playing at Wimbledon last June. Malloy and Talbert have won the doubles title here four times, gaining runnerup honors twice. They were giv ing away 38 years to their younger opponents. Fraser is 26 and Emerson only 23. Pope Addresses Olympic Teams Vatican City-IUPD-Pope John XXIII today receives about 7,000 Olympic athletes from both side of the Iron Curtain in an unprecedented open-air audience in St. Peter's square on the eve of the I960 games. No other pontiff in the 2,000-year history of the Ro man Catholic church has ever addressed Olympic athletes en masse. Russia's Olympic team sent word to Vatican officials that it would be present at the audience. Communist Yugo slavia, Romania and Bulgaria intimated that they would boycott the papal appearance. Vatican officials said at least 70 of the 85 nations com peting in the Rome Olympic games have announced they were attending the audience. Pope John, silting on a gild ed throne on lop of the flight of stops leading up to St. Peter's Basilica, was to ad dress the athletes in Latin. Local Netters Lose at Tourney Three Rogue Valley Tennis club members returned to Mcdford this week after com peting in the Second Annual Willamette Valley Tennis tournament at Corvallis last week end. Jerry Joy reached the sec ond round in men's singles by defeating Dr. Endicott, Corvallis 6-0, B-3, but was then eliminated by eighth-seeded Bill Brown, Corvallis, 6-4, 6-2. Alex Petersen was downed by second-seeded Dick Hal lock, Red Bluff. 6-2, 6-2. Defending champion Jim Jackson, Portland, defeated Dick Joy 6-2, 6-1, and then continued on to win the cham pionship. Jackson defeated Dick Hallock in the finals 6-3, 6-2. In men's doubles play, the well-known duo of Dick and Jerry Joy met the second seeded team of Chin and Stone, Corvallis, and were edged out 6-4, 6-4.
