There's a bit of coolness- and an official protest -between the long-time friends as a result of Tuesday night's game in which the White Sox climbed to within eight per centage points of first place by beating the Yankees, 5-1. The trouble started even before the game did. Lopez originally announced left-hander Billy Pierce as the starting pitcher for the White Sox and wrote his name on the line-up card. But after Pierce took a few warm-up pitches on the mound, Lopez called in right-hander Early Wynn, who was heating up In the bullpen all the time. Stengel Cites Rules , Stengel insisted the rules ay a pitcher must pitch to al least one batter and promptly annouced the Yankees were playing under protest. Lopez pointed out Pierce was unable to pitch because he had injured his hip in his list start against Cleveland last Thursday. Plate umpire Charlie Berry agreed. Stengel didn't though, es pecially after Wynn hurled a four-hitter against the Yun. fcess for his 10th victory. Bill Fischer was the winner. Harmon Killebrew's 22nd homer with one on in the iixth Inning off Dick Hall was Washington's margin ,of vic tory over Kansas City. Returning to gusty old Candlestock park Tuesday night from a miserable road trip, manager Tom Sheehan's fifth-placers pounded out a 6-1 triumph over the "Cincinnati Reds to boost their record at home to 35 wins and 25 losses. On the road they have won 23 and lost 33. Jim O'Toole (10-11) is sched uled to start for Cincinnati to day against Mike McCormick (11-8) in a tangle of young southpaws. Jack Sanford, told by pitch ing Bill Posedel to forget the downdrafts and go out and pitch, hurled a neat five-hit ter Tuesday night to end a los ing streak of his own that had reached three straight. Old Nemesis Beaten Big Jack fanned seven and gave up only one walk while besting Bob Purkey who went into the game with a 3-1 sea sonal record over the Giants. Purkey held a 1-0 lead as the Giants came up in their half of the sixth. Then they scored a pair of unearned runs to go ahead for the night and USGA Field Tulsa, Okla. - IUPI1 - Three former champions today led the field into the third round of the USGA National Wom en's Amateur tournament at Tulsa County club. Leading the parade of past champions was Barbara Mc Intire of Lake Park, Fla. The other two are Anne Quast of Marysville, Wash., 1958 cham pion, and Jo Ann Gunderson, Kirkland, Wash., 1957 cham pion. The lady golfers will play two rounds today designed to narrow the field to eight for Thursdays quarter - finals. Over 100 hopefuls started the tournament Monday. None of the three cham pions had an easy time Tues day. Miss Mclntire defeated Sharon Fladoos of Dubuque, Iowa, 3 and 1, but Miss Fla doos, runner-up in last week's USGA Girls' tournament, made her earn the victory. Miss Gunderson fired a front side 33 on the rolling par 71, 6,150-yard course, then went on to defeat Marjorie Burns of Greensboro, N.C., 3 and 1. Miss Quasi made her shots on the back side count as she defeated USGA Junior cham pion Carol Soreson of Janes ville, Wis., 2-up. The match was even at the turn. YMCA to Stress Advanced Swim A Lot of attention will be put on advance swimming in the YMCA's fall program, ac cording to Physical Director David Curzon. Curzon said that beginning swimming will still be offered during the fall, but more stress is being put on ad vanced swimming so that stu dents who took the beginning course during the summer may have the opportunity to improve their swimming abil ity. The summer program at the YMCA is Hearing completion, Curzon noted. Other swim classes to be offered during the fall and winter months include, life saving, water ballet, instruc tional classes for children and adults alike, classes for the physically handicapped and swim team practices. Family night and recreational swim ming are also included in the program. Victory tacked on two more each in the seventh and eighth frames. Felipe Alou and Willie Kirkland played leading roles in helping Sanford win his 10th of the year against 11 set backs. Alou cracked a line single to center which broke a 1-1 tie in the sixth, while Kirkland pounded out three hits, driving in two runs with a hot single in the eighth after scoring in the seventh. "I thought Purkey was go ing to beat us," Sanford de clared. "He's a tough guy when he has any kind of a lead. But that error in the sixth inning opened the gates. Fatal Error Jack was referring to a bad throw to first base by rookie third baseman Cliff Cook which let him score from sec ond with the tying run after two were out. The error came on a routine grouncer by Wil lie Mays, who hastened on to second base while Gordon Coleman of the Reds was chas ing the ball. Then Alou put the skids under Purkey with the single that brought Mays in. Kirkland opened the sev enth with a double which helped nudge Purkey closer to his eighth loss and then two more runs came across on singles by Ed Bressoud and Jim Davenport. Kirkland's two run single in the eighth came at the ex pense of reliever Bill Henry. A bloop single to rieht bv Chico Cardenas accounted for tne Keels' lone marker in the second. This came in an appraisal of the Russian Olympic games track and field chances. The way the Soviets figure, they are good for only four gold medals - and three of these are in the women's events. Either Ivan Bolotnikov or Alexander Artinyuk, both with 28:58.0 clockings for 10, 000 meters could win this event, Russian officials said. Among their women they claimed "sure" gold medals for shot putter Tamara Press, who holds the 57 foot, 1 inch world record; javelin thrower Elvira Ozolina, who holds the world mark of 194 feet, 10.8 inches, and 800-meter runner Ludmilla Shevtso va, who has a pending world record of two minutes, 4.3 seconds. Vassily Kuznetsov, the offi cial world record holder in the decathlon, was said by the Russians to "face an uphill climb" against Rafer Johnston who recently bettered the ex isting mark of the U. S., in the decathlon and "may have to settle for second place." Metro Preppers Start Practice Portland - IUPD - Pre-season practice opened today for teams in the Metro league football circuit. The 1960 high school openers are less than three weeks away. Metro will boast a 10-team circuit this year, adding Sun set in Beaverton and Centen nial in Gresham. They join regular members, Beaverton, Astoria, David Douglas, Cen tral Catholic, Gresham, Hills boro, Clackamas and Milwau kie.
