SUNDAY, AUGUST 21, I960 Diseases May be Caused by Human Anti-Body Cells Chicago - (Science Service) -More and more evidence is piling up to support the theory that the body's infection fighting mechanism itself may be able to cause diseases, an editorial in the Journal of the American Medical Associa tion asserts. . Normally, the antibody- producing cells serve as front line' defense against disease, but abnormal cells may be able to cause a chronic and sometimes fatal disorder known as Red Wolf disease or systemic lupus erythema' tosus (SLE). Quoting Dr. William Dame- shek, professor of medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, the editorial said the evidence seems con vincing" and may mark "the beginning of a new era" in de fining the causes of other dis eases, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
