Watkins Plum Pudding Dog Is A Dalmatian Of all the ridiculous names anyone ever coined to de scribe a certain breed of dog, the record must certainly go to that master of misonmers who named one the "Plum Pudding" dog. It's difficult to think of a dog having any similarities with a plum pud ding, either in color, shape, action or appearance. Perhaps this inconsistency can ba softened somewhat by remembering that the very rich, edible plum pudding ac tually never did contain any plums, unless by another grammatical liberty we might mean a raisin or a hunk of citron. With even less reason this so-called "plum pudding" dog was saddled with anoth er meaningless name, "spotted dick," which is just as ri diculous when, along with other names, it is applied to what Is technically a Dalma tian. These beautiful animals, almost as large as greyhounds, are believed to have orginat- ed In Dalmatia, a part of Austria, near the city Venice, Every European Country Although tile dog's heritage is often disputed writings as well as paintings of antiquity of many European, Asiatic and African countries, seem to lay claim to some part of the dog's early origin. Like a roving ,gypsy, the Dalmatian was at one time found in just 1 about every European coun try. . Tha dog's beauty, a snow white coat on which a gener ous sprinkling of black dots appear, make the plum pud ding dog one of the most at tractive of canines. Along with the dog's attractiveness, is its kindly and gentle dis position, intelligence and in herent devotion to its master; so it was only natural that it should have found a receptive home in the new world. At one time, in America, it was very fashionable to own a Dalmatian. Back at the turn of the cen tury, the horse-drawn fire dn- gine clanged through the city streets, and those old engines usually carried more than fire fighting equipment and fire men along with them went the "Fire House Dog," as the plum pudding dog was called. There was a deep affinity be tween the horse and this dog, so much in fact, the dog was renamed again and called the "coach-dog" or "carriage dog." Some people claimed the fire horse was more tractable when the fire house dog was in attendance. About that time, too, every fashionable carriage also carried a "coach dog." Many Remember There are many people who still remember well the beau tiful dog with the black polka dots on lis white coat, sitting proudly on the seat of the old horse-drawn carriage. Too, they remember how very round the black spots were, and that they never seemed to intermingle, no black spot touched any other black spot. Now, of course, the carri ages are gone, so too are the horse-drawn fire engines of yesteryear. The "plum pud ding" dog Is less popular to day and, in time, he too may disappear from the every changing scene.
