The towel fee of $1 Is Blots Can Help To Predict Leading Business Executives Bonn, Germany - (Science Service)- Ink blots, in the hands of a psychologist, can be used to predict whether a man will be a success or a failure as a business execu tive, Dr. Zygmunt A. Piotrow ski of the Jefferson Medical College of Philadelphia told the International Congress of Psychology here. ' The blots can also help pre dict whether a man will be a criminal. Dr.PiotrowskL used the fa mous ink blot test developed by the Swiss psychiatrist Her mann Rorschach in his pre dictions. The extent to which a person is inclined to look at the pattern of a blot as a whole (his W score) rather than to pay attention to small parts is significant for predict ing whether he will be suc cessful as a high-ranking ex ecutive. Avafaga Expected Score The average W score of men who reach the vice presiden tial level and then fail is a little over 10, Dr. Piotrowski found in a study of 50 top ranking executives'. This score of 10 is about the average W score to be expected from a group of adults with superior intelligence. Highly successful execu tives - those who kept ad vancing in power and achievements-averaged nearly 18 in W score or nearly twice as high as the high executive who failed at the top level. Perhaps the most important clue to potential behavior is what the psychiatrist calls a CR (color response). The indi vidual makes a color response when he pays attention to the color that appears on some or the Rorschach cards. He may, for example, point to a squiggle in one corner of the card and say, "That looks like a caterpillar." If pressed for his reason why, he may say, "Because it is green." That is a color response. Color Measure Emotions Color responses measure emotions and the desire to as sociate with or separate from others. If an individual pro duces no CR he is assumed to be emotionally flat or indif ferent. Color responses can be pos itive or negative, Indicating attraction toward others or re pulsion. If a person sees such wholesome objects as land scapes, flowers, fruit, warmth giving (controlled fire) he is giving positive color responses which indicate that he is drawn toward others. If the e o 1 o r on the blots makes a person think of blood, anatomical slides, wounds, burning houses, an explosion, etc., he is giving negative CR which (unless he is a surgeon or medical stu- also required. Students wish ing to purchase a school year book may reserve a copy at this time by paying $4 additional. dent) predicts that he will withdraw from others. Dr. Piotrowski described another test which might be used to predict behavior especially anti-social or ag gressive delinquent behavior. The Hand Test consists of nine cards, each containing a pic ture of a human hand in a position different from those on the other card. The per son tested is asked to tell what each of the hands might be doing. Asked To Imagine The tenth card is blank and the person tested is asked to imagine a hand for that card and then to talk about it. The test is scored as fol lows, according to what is seen.; 1. Aggressiveness - if the hand is seen as hitting. 2. Directing - if the hand is seen as giving signals as a traffic policeman. 3. Fear - warding off aggression, self-protection. 4. Affection - if the hand is seen as reaching out in a friendly way. 5. Communica tion - getting ideas across to others, emphasizing a point. 6. Activity - hands perform ing skillful mechanical work. 7. Submisslveness - calling for help. 8. Passivity - no action, "waiting for finger nails to vdry." 9., Exhibition ism - attracting attention to oneself. 10. Crippled hands -hands deformed or diseased.' Scores on this test were found to distinguish between prison inmates and normal in dividuals, between prison in mates and indigents and be tween normal individuals and withdrawn mental patients. Sanitary Engineer To Move Office Here T. M. (Ted) Gerow Jr., dis trict sanitary engineer, Ore gon state sanitary authority, said this week he planned to shift his office from Grants Pass to . the Jackson county courthouse, Medford, on Aug. 24. He said that a recent en gineering graduate from Ore gon State college has been hired to help him. Gerow, who covers seven counties in south western Oregon, said as the sanitation problems increase in the area the big problem is becoming lack of manpower to work on these problems. Gerow said the primary reason he is moving is pos sible consolidation of state of fices here. However, he said he has not been able to learn any details of such a consolid ation. Referring to the request of the state water resources board meeting in Medford last week, Gerow said the Bear creek pollution report would probably be referred to the Portland office for study and report and perhaps through channels to him. , BIG ICE CAP Greenland's ice cap is twice the area of Texas.
