MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, ORE. THURSDAY, AUGUST 18, I960 Cooking, Sewing, Child Care Winners Told for 4-H Fair W. JACKSOr STRECT PARK-SCHOOL EXAMPLE This is an "illustrative ex ample" of a park-school development for Medford designed to accompany a recent Planning for Parks and Recreational report. The report was prepared by the bureau of municipal research and service, University of Oregon, through co operation with Robert Haworth, Medford parks and recrea tion director; Ned Langford, city planning director; and other city administrators, to serve as a guide to city plan nors and the parks and recreation commission in prepar ing adequate facilities for Medford. Key to the parks pro gram is the Qark-school development geared to combine the facilities of the city and the school, thus not providing idle equipment. With the coordination of the city admin istrators and school officials, this example has been pro vided to show exactly what could be done. The entire park need not be constructed at this time, although initial work has started along faummit ave. The swimming pool, wad ing pool, and bath house, as well as the Jackson school play area, comprise what is in the area now. Along West Jackson st. west of the school, the land is now used for homes, thus showing that the proposal is designed for fu ture development. The major factor holding back extensive expansion of the program at this site is adequate funds. No special arrangement has been provided in the financing of this project by the parks and recreation commission. Cost of developing the play areas along the east side would be some $3,000 according to the planners. How extensive this type of arrangement is carried out will depend on action by the planning commission, parks and recreation commission, city council, school officials, and local residents. Todd Caster Wins Purple Ribbon, Rosette for Steer ' Todd Caster, Crater FFA chapter, was presented the purple ribbon and rosette for having the grand champion FFA fat steer at the Jackson county 4-H and FFA fair yes terday. , Todd also placed first with his Angus steer in the FFA market beef class. First place in Hereford steers was Alan Bray, Crater; Victory Halsey, Crater FFA, 2nd; Leon Small, Phoenix, 3rd; Curt Harris,-, Phoenix, 4th; and Jim Conger, Crater, 5lh. Carrell Stock, Eagle Point, exhibited the senior champion Angus cow and the junior champion Angus heifer in the FFA breeding beef judging. Dale Vnughan, Eagle Point had the grand champion An gus cow. Vaughan also took first place In the junior bull calf section, third in the jun ior Angus heifer section, first in the senior Angus heifer division, first in the junior Angus cow section, first in the senior Angus cow section and first In the production class. In the Hereford division, Bob Ryan, Crater, exhibited the grand champion, the sen ior and junior champion heif er. Don Ryan, Crater, had the first place ribbon for junior heifer calf and second place went to Bill Rasmussen, Phoe nix. In the registered junior heifer class, Bob Ryan, Cra ter, was 1st; Larry Murphy, Phoenix, 2nd; Bill Rasmus sen, Phoenix, 3rd; Bob Ryan, Crater, 4th; and Elvin Haw kins, Eagle Point, 5th. Ernie Bolz, Phoenix, took first place in the grade junior heifer class and Steven Gercn, Eagle Point, second. In the junior cow class, Bob Ryan, Crater, 1st, and Bill Rasmussen, Phoenix, 2nd. In the production class, (cow and calf), Bob Ryan, Crater, 1st; Bill Rasmussen, Phoenix, 2nd; Victor Halsey, Eagle Point, 3rd; and Elvin Hawkins, Eagle Point, 4th. Crater, Phoenix Chapters Win FFA Crop Awards Awards in the FFA crops judging contest Tuesday were i evenly split between Phoenix i and Crater chapters. The Harris family took blue and red ribbons in the small 1 grains class for the Phoenix FFA. Danny Harris took first , place and Curt Harris second place. Jim Frink, Crater, look the white ribbon. Danny Harris took the red award for oats, also. Jim Frink, Crater, took the red award for wheat. In the alfalfa hay class, Steve Kesler, took the blue award for Phoenix FFA chap ter. Dean Sommer, took the red award for Phoenix. Jim Frink received a red ribbon for Crater chapter and Rus sell Frink, also of Crater, took the white ribbon. In the oats and vetch class, Jim Frink, Crater, took a blue and Russell Frink, also of Crater, the red award. Dean Sommer, Phoenix FFA, look the red ribbon for oat hay, and a blue for mixed hay. Ron Grcb, Eagle Point, took a blue ribbon for his meadow hay. Tom White, Crater, took a red award and Joe Reeder, Crater, a white award for sweet corn. In the summer squash class, Jim Conger, Crater, took the blue award and Wesley Knight, Crater, the red award for golden delicious squash. The Seven Oaks ranch at Central Point will enter nine head in the California fair. John Bohnert and Don Brad shaw took the grand cham pionship in the Hereford di visionwith an 18-months-old bull, a reserve championship with a two-year-old bull SO Colorado Domino and had the championship female with SO Miss Mill Iron. The Table Top ranch owned by Ray Retcr. Medford, had the reserve champion female. Slim Hardin, Phoenix, exhibited five head of Angus at the Josephine countv fair.
