B MOVER Portlander Is Offered Title Fight New York-tUPD - Handsome young Denny Moyer of Port land, Ore., gets a shot at the welterweight crown next year, if he can still make the weight, because of his upset non-title victory over cham pion Benny (Kid) Paret at Madison Square Garden Tues day night. Harry Markson, Garden managing director, said today, "Moyer can meet the winner of the Paret-Federico Thomp son title fight, scheduled for the Garden Oct. 15, if he wants to." It would be 21-year-old Moyer's second shot at the 147-pound crown. He tried to win it from Don Jordan on July 10, 1959, but lost the decision. Tuesday night bronze-haired Denny won a split verdict over champion Paret of Cuba before an estimated 4,000 in the non-televised 10-rounder. Moyer was aided by a seventh round foul. Paret was penal ized that session, his best, for two low blows. Parent's title was not at stake because each scaled over the welterweght: Moyer, 152 Vi pounds; Paret, 151. Before the fight, Moyer said It would be his last appear ance as a welterweight be cause he no longer could pare down to 147 pounds. But after his unexpected victory, he and Manager Sid Flaherty agreed he would try to make the limit if he could get a title shot. Paret, favored at 3V4 to 1, said: "The round taken from me cost me the fight. But Moyer is very good and very hard to fight because he ties you at close quarters. I'll be glad to give him a title shot after I beat Thompson." WIN TENNIS TITLE Kitzbuehel, Austria - (UPI) -Pierre Darmon of France won the men's singles title in the Alpine international tennis tournament Tuesday and An gela Mortimer of Britain won the women's title. Darmon won by beating Australian Roy Emerson, 2-6, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3, 6-3, while Miss Mortimer beat Rita Bentley, also of Britain, 6-3, 6-0. (UPI Telephoto) Stagg Receives NFF Award At Special Banquet Stockton, Calif. -IUPD- Amos Alonzo Stagg was presented the National Football founda tion's Gold Medal Award Tuesday night at a special banquet in honor of his 98th birthday. In presenting the rarely given medal, Chester J. La Roche, president of the foun dation, called Stagg "the one man who is the very personi fication of football." La Roche continued "Amos Alonzo Stagg has done more than any other living man to establish the features, transi tions and character - building of football." Telegrams were read at the ceremony from President Ei senhower and Gen. Douglas MacArthur, the only others ever to receive the founda tion's medal. Stagg was a choice on Walt er Camp's first All-America football team and has spent more than 60 years coaching. Al Committee Meets To Talk Expansion Move Boston -(UPI)- The American league executive committee holds a "preliminary and ex ploratory" meeting on expan sion in New York Aug. 30, it was anounced here by Presi dent Joe Cronin. "It is most unlikely that any definite expansion moves can be detrmined and announced at that time," Cronin said. He might have been refer ring to conflict within the league's high command. Dan Topping, co-owner of the New York Yankees, is threatening to block the addition of a Na tional league team in New York unless the American league gets into Los Angeles. At a Chicago meeting of American and National league representatives it was under stood that each league would establish two new teams, mov ing into four franchises of the stillborn Continental league. The National league would set up teams in New York and Toronto, Ont., and the Ameri can league would move into Houston and Minneapolis-St. Paul. This does not meet the Topping test because New York would be invaded by the senior circuit but the Ameri can league would not get a crack at Los Angeles. In any case, Cronin said, the Aug. 20 meeting would hear a report from its realign ment committee. Court Dismisses Elliott Lawsuit Honolulu - (UPI) - A million dollar damage suit against Australian mile great Herb Elliott was dismissed in Cir cuit Court here Tuesday. Promoter Leo Leavitt al leges that Elliott broke a con tract in which he promised to turn professional. Circuit Judge John A. Dyer had earlier ruled that the suit should have been filed in Australia where the contract was reportedly made. The interior department to day announced the frame work of 1960-61 waterfowl hunting dates for the entire nation. Oregon and Washing ton game departments will be able to pick their 90-day duck hunting season between the dates of Friday, Oct. 7, and Sunday, Jan. 8. The duck hunting season will be shortened from the.94 days allowed last year but the half hour before sunrise shooting, taken from hunters last year, was restored for ducks except on opening day when shooting starts at noon. Bag and possession limit in the 1960-61 federal regu lations is four ducks a day and eight in possession. It was five per day and 10 in possession last year. States could take an option of five ducks daily bag and posses sion. Redheads and canvasbacks were put on the completely protected list in all flyways this year. Equipment Next Few Days Crater nigh school foot ball Coach Leonard Warren announced today that equip ment for the 1960 leaion will be issued starting to morrow at the high school. Warren said leitermen will get their equipment on Thursday; non-leitermen on Friday; and new players or players out for the first time on Saturday, Equipment will be issued starting at 7 p.m., each of the three days. The first practice session is scheduled for Aug. 24, and physical examinations will be given on Aug. 24 and 25, he said. Stan Dowson Wins Club Jr. Trophy Stan Dowson, Medford, won the Rogue Valley Country club's junior division golf ti tle Tuesday when he fired a second round 18-hole 83 to make his score for the 36 hole tournament a 16-over-par 160. Right behind Dowson and in second place was Mike Monroe who shot a second day 78 to make his final score 161. Steve Cummins was in third place with a 163 total. Play was for medal. The junior division title is for boys ages 16-17. A playoff between Larry Berg and Mike Miller was nec essary to determine the win ner of the boys division title at the club. Berg shot a six on the first playoff hole to Miller's seven and came away with the title. Both golfers ended regular play with a 36 hole total of 164. Doug Olson and Tom Clark tied for third spot with iden tical 167s. Boys division is for boys through the ages of 12-15. . i Kent Clark won the Pee Wee division (through 11 years) and championship with a 36-hole total of 198. In sec ond place was Ed Mencke with a 210. The girls' division crown was taken by Christy Finch, Medford, who shot a 36-hole total 226. Tied for second spot were Sue House and Sharon Mellish with scores of 239 These two girls will meet in a playoff at a later date. Golf Tourney Pre-Qualifying Dates Slated Pre-qualifying by Rogue valley area divoters entered in the Southern Oregon Golf tournament is slated Aug. 21 through 30 at Rogue Valley Country club. The 32nd annual tourney is set for Aug. 31 through Sept. 5 at the Medford course. Rogue Valley Country club high handicappers not trying for the championship flight are to tour on their qualify ing rounds from Aug. 21 through 29. Entries from out side the Medford area in Jack son county and from the Grants Pass area without title flight ambitions should qual ify in this period, too. Members of RVCC aiming for titular flight spots are to make their qualifying stints on Tuesday, Aug. 30. All sen ior division entrants so wish ing can qualify on this date. The country club's pro shop is now signing golfers for starting times for the Aug. 30 rounds. Wednesday, Aug. 31, is qualifying day for out-of-town participants in the tourney. RVCC is adhering to its Sunday, Aug. 21, deadline for filing of entries by local golf crs because of the large field of out - of town contestants Aug. 24 is closing date for entry by the out-of-towner and non-RVCC players. CALL SP 2-5227 FAI1 T"; 126 North Front Middleweight Bout Discussed Los Angeles -(UPI)- Promoter George Parnassus plans to fly Friday to Jordan, Utah, to talk with NBA middleweight champion Gene Fullmer and his manager, Marv Jensen, about a projected title bout here Oct. 8 with Sugar Ray Robinson. Parnassus said he would like to hold the fight at the Sports Arena which will seat about 20,000 but he empha sized that no firm agreement had been reached on terms with either fighter. Robinson had been under suspension by the Maryland Athletic commission for fail ing to show up in a bout at Baltimore. The former cham pion made a public apology Tuesday and was reinstated and became free to negotiate for the Fullmer bout. Elorde, who won the title from Gomes in a slaughter in Manila, hopes for a repeat performance and then a shot at Joe Brown and the light weight title.
