Sixty-three of them were half-way toward their goal as the large field teed off in the second of two 18-hole qualify ing rounds for the 64 places in the match-play tournament proper beginning Wednesday. Leading them all was 44- All-Star Doing Well In Portland Hospital Portland-IUPD-Lewis Tuttlo, Beaverton tackle who was co captain of the Metro team in the All-Star game for the benefit of the Shriners hospi tal for Crippled Children, was reported doing well at St. Vincent hsopital here today. Tuttle suffered a torn carr iage in his right knee and was taken from Multnomah Sta dium to the hospital by ambu lance Saturday night. WRITERS HONOR LEMON Cleveland-IUPII-Bob Lemon, who won 207 games and was a 20-game winner in seven seasons, has been voted into the Cleveland Hall of Fame at the Cleveland Stadium by the Cleveland chapter of the Base ball Writers Association of America. The boys were cooling off in a down town fountain and were having a ball until the inevitable came along the long arm of Mass Exodus of Technicians From Red China London - IUPD - A mass de parture of Russian experts, technicians and their families from Red China Is under way, neutral diplomats reported from Peiping today. The reports tended to sup port week end dispatches in the official Yugoslav news paper, Borba. Those dispatch es, sent to Borba from Pei ping, implied that the de partures indicated some sort of trouble between Moscow and Peiping. Trouble Indicated Yugoslavs recalled that the withdrawal of Soviet experts from Yugoslavia preceded the break of the Kremlin with Marshal Tito's Belgrade re gime in 1948. Western diplomatic sources considered the latest develop ments as indicative of trouble between the Communist allies, but cautioned against any as sumption that a break in the Moscow-Peiping axis was im minent. The number of Soviet ex perts in Red China is not known in the West. Estimates put it at between 5,000 and 6,000, engaged m various branches of China's economy, industry and on some projects for development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. A similar number of Red Chinese students and re searchers is understood to be training in Russia. FRUIT MANAGER DIES New York-IUPII-Ralph Keat ing, 66, of Scarsdale, N.Y., re tirprl oeneral manager of the United Fruit Co. Freight and Passenger department, died Sunday at Roosevelt hospital. (UPI Telephoto) Verified Today's diplomatic dis patches said Soviet technicians and advisers were leaving the Red China capital in unusual ly large numbers, homebound for Russia. No official reason has thus far been offered, nor have the Chinese themselves re ported publicly the departure of the Soviet experts. Diplomatic observers be lieved the move signified a further cooling off in the strained Sino-Russian friend ship. IN THE Record Parachute Jump of-102,200 Feet Recorded Alamogordo, N.M. - IUPD -Capt. Joseph Kittinger todav set a world record for manned balloon flight and a new para chute jumping mark by leap ing from an open gondola 102,200 feet above earth. He fell freely for 4 minutes 38 seconds, opened his chute at 17,500 feet and reached ground safely in the elapsed time of 13 minutes and 8 seconds. Kittinger began today's as-1 cent in a balloon launched from a site about 18 miles northeast of the Air Force Missile Development Center at Holloman Air Force Base. In Good Condition Today's jump far exceeded the old record set by Kittinger Nov. 16, 1959, when he leaped 74,700 feet. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for that jump. Holloman AFB spokesmen said Kittinger was in good condition. He broke the pre vious manned balloon alti tude record of 102,000 feet set by Col. David G. Simons two years ago here. Kittinger wore a pressur ized suit with plastic face mask warmed by batteries, to provide clear vision and pre vent "frosting up" in the 100 degree below zero tempera tures of the edge of space. Pearson said today. Pearson announced an ap pointment would be made only after consultation with Gov. Mark Hatfield. ' , UNION OIL COMPANY OF CALIFORNIA Air Force Transports Equipment for Congo Wiesbaden, Germany - (UPD The U.S. Air force Monday began a new phase of its air lift to the troubled Congo in which some 4,100 United Na tions troops and more than 500 tons of equipment will be transported there. The first flights of seven C-130 Globemaster planes left Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for Katanga province in the Con go. The planes made some 16 shuttle runs in the first day of operations, European Air Force headquarters announc ed here. The new operation is ex pected to last through the be ginning of September. Stink Bombs in Portland Stores Portland - IUPD - Stink bombs were set off in the downtown store of the Meier and Frank Co., here Monday night, and in the Lloyd Cen ter. Police went to the J. J. Newberry Inc., store and the Meier and Frank store In the Lloyd shopping center about 6:45 p.m. and to the down town department store about 7 p.m. Officers said the incidents were apparently the work of the same person or persons. Police said a foul smelling fluid was poured on an esca lator leading from the base ment to the main floor of the Newberry store and the Mei er and Frank store in the cast side shopping center and in two locations in the down town store. PASTOR DIES Yonkers, N.Y, - IUPD -'The Rev. Francis David, 86, pas tor for 33 years of St. Marga ret's Roman Catholic church here and an editor with the New York Hungarian publica tion Kronika, died Monday. PHYSICIST'S SON KILLED Whitwell, Tenn.-IUPD-James H. Pollard, 20, son of noted nuclear physicist William G Pollard, was killed Monday in an automobile accident. They told him Democratic leaders apperently intend to jettison many of the Presi dent's legislative requests in cluding his calls for action in farm, distressed areas and housing fields. Senate Republican Leader Everett M. Dirksen of Illinois and House GOP Leader Charles A. Halleck of Indiana, reported this to newsmen after a two-and-a-half hour session with the President. Republicans were hoping for a return to their pre 1958 election year form of drawing a larger vote than Democrats in the primary.
