Mass Exodus of
Technicians From
Red China
London - IUPD - A mass de
parture of Russian experts,
technicians and their families
from Red China Is under way,
neutral diplomats reported
from Peiping today.
The reports tended to sup
port week end dispatches in
the official Yugoslav news
paper, Borba. Those dispatch
es, sent to Borba from Pei
ping, implied that the de
partures indicated some sort
of trouble between Moscow
and Peiping.
Trouble Indicated
Yugoslavs recalled that the
withdrawal of Soviet experts
from Yugoslavia preceded the
break of the Kremlin with
Marshal Tito's Belgrade re
gime in 1948.
Western diplomatic sources
considered the latest develop
ments as indicative of trouble
between the Communist allies,
but cautioned against any as
sumption that a break in the
Moscow-Peiping axis was im
minent. The number of Soviet ex
perts in Red China is not
known in the West. Estimates
put it at between 5,000 and
6,000, engaged m various
branches of China's economy,
industry and on some projects
for development of nuclear
energy for peaceful purposes.
A similar number of Red
Chinese students and re
searchers is understood to be
training in Russia.

Verified
Today's diplomatic dis
patches said Soviet technicians
and advisers were leaving the
Red China capital in unusual
ly large numbers, homebound
for Russia.
No official reason has thus
far been offered, nor have
the Chinese themselves re
ported publicly the departure
of the Soviet experts.
Diplomatic observers be

Record Parachute
Jump of-102,200
Feet Recorded
Alamogordo, N.M. - IUPD -Capt.
Joseph Kittinger todav
set a world record for manned
balloon flight and a new para
chute jumping mark by leap
ing from an open gondola
102,200 feet above earth.
He fell freely for 4 minutes
38 seconds, opened his chute
at 17,500 feet and reached
ground safely in the elapsed
time of 13 minutes and 8
seconds.
Kittinger began today's as-1
cent in a balloon launched
from a site about 18 miles
northeast of the Air Force
Missile Development Center
at Holloman Air Force Base.
In Good Condition
Today's jump far exceeded
the old record set by Kittinger
Nov. 16, 1959, when he leaped
74,700 feet. He received the
Distinguished Flying Cross for
that jump.
Holloman AFB spokesmen
said Kittinger was in good
condition. He broke the pre
vious manned balloon alti
tude record of 102,000 feet set
by Col. David G. Simons two
years ago here.
Kittinger wore a pressur
ized suit with plastic face
mask warmed by batteries, to
provide clear vision and pre
vent "frosting up" in the 100
degree below zero tempera
tures of the edge of space.
