MONDAY. AUGUST II. KtO MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, ORE. Canadian Prison Rioters Quelled Stoney Mountain, Man. -IDW - An uneasy quiet pre vailed today at the maximum security Stoney Mountain penitentiary following a pri son riot in which one inmate was killed and four other convicts and three guards were injured. More than ISO soldiers, Royal Canadian Mounted Po lice officers, Winnipeg city police and prison guards quelled the uprising Sunday night with a hail of bullets and tear gas, more than five hours after the rioting broke out during a Sunday after noon baseball game. A convict, whose name was withheld pending notification of next-of-kin, was killed by a ricocheting bullet when guards opened fire. The four wounded inmates also were felled by gunfire. The three guards were admitted to the general hospital in Winnipeg. No report on their condition was available early today. The four injured convicts were treated in the prison in firmary. An RCMP spokesman said the guards were beaten by rioters wielding baseball bats and sticks. The rioting lasted for al most three hours after the outbreak before all inmates were back in their cells. Seven of the ringleaders were in solitary confinement today. (UPI Telephoto) Washington - (UPI) -The Navy's search for an effective shark repellent is taking it in side the lowly sea cucumber. It all started when someone noticed that the apparently defenseless little animals. similar in size and shape to the garden type cucumber, are seldom bothered by fish or other marine life. Observers noted that when touched, sea cucumbers re gurgitate their insides. And, scientists discovered, the ani mals' digestive system con tains a powerful toxin. Called holothurin, it sends some types of fish into fatal con vulsions. One of Many Projects The research is one of the many projects being conduct ed by the Navy's hydrobioligy program which studies marine flora and fauna for possible hints and aids to mankind. Of the more publicized New Republic Brings Confusion Brazzaville, Congo Repub lic - IUPD - Another Congo re public gained its independ ence today, adding more con fusion to Africa's muddled map. This Congo republic, across the Congo river from the Con go republic which gained its independence from Belgium June 30, severed itself from France at one minute past last midnight. It will remain a member of the French com munity of nations. Neither Congo will yield its name and this is sure to cause some mixups in such fields as mail service, map reading, tourism and interna tional diplomacy. For purposes of easy identi fication, newsmen have taken to calling this the Congo Re public and the one across the river just the Congo. J.-OJPH-A new system using small cop per tubing instead of big ducts may produce a boom in central air conditioning of older homes and buildings, in ventor Calvin D. McCracken said today. Only about 2 per cent of the homes in the country have central air conditioning at Dresent. McCracken is the inventor of an air heating system using the same type copper tubing and of a successful line of solar water heaters. He has been working on his copper tubing air conditioning for a dozen years, started testing it four years ago and put it in production this year as a com panion to his jet-heet warm air heating system. Heated Up Rapidly Early efforts to use easily installed cooper tubing for air conditioning stumbled over the fact that after cold air was pumped through the tubing, it heated up rapidly the min ute it was dispersed in the room. McCracken said he solved this by several procedures. First, he cools the air down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit com pared to about 57 degrees in a conventional air-uuuuiwu"-ing system. The cold air tnen is iorceu through the tubes at very high velocity, 2,000 cubic feet a minute, and is expenea into the rooms through special as pirating registers. The cold air in effect is forced up to the ceiling and mixes rapidly with the warm air from the room. Also the two-inch copper tubes are insulated with fi breglass, which eliminates pipe condensation in me walls. More Cool Air Forced Bv this system, whicn ne calls jet-cool, McCracken says he can force more cool air into a house through tne two- inch copper tubing man through convention large sheet metal ducts. Only a doz en vears ago. many air condi tioning engineers said the cop per tubing system couldn't be made to worK. At the 40-degree tempera ture, the jet-cool system ae- humidifies tne rooms quite ranidlv. The condenser and refr Berating units are sepa rate, the condenser being put outside the house and the re- frifferatine unit in the base ment, a utility room or in the attic. Installing the copper tubing reauires no major carpentry and can be done by two men in a couple of days in most houses. A complete unit lor a sev- on.rnom SDlll level liuuae would cost $1,200 plus instal lation and financing. If tne house already had copper tub ing for jet-heet, the cost woum be $900. She says she will hire a housekeeper, but she would like me to look in on the children during the afternoon. I feel that a woman's great est happiness is in caring for her family and Penny is let ting this pass her by. My mother raised a family of seven and worked very hard, but she was always happy as lark. What s eating these modern women? Penney J. - I was married when I was in my sophomore year at college and I gave up school to start my family, I regret it very much because think a woman of today is foolish to give up all the op portunities available to her Its all very well to talk about the joy of raising family. But what does it come to. All it means is that you are on the run from morning to nignt - snopplng, cleaning, cooking, serving, trying ; to keep the kids out of trouble I love my children, but I think they might be better off without my screaming at them. My husband says whatever I want to do is O.K. with him, so I don't see why my mother should be so upset about it, studies are those on the in telligence and communicative abilities of porpoises. The mammal also is being studied for a clue as to how it moves through the water so noise lessly a subject of interest to submarine designers. The holothurin project, if successful, could lead to in creased safety for survivors of shipwrecks and plane crashes, skin divers and others who have little between themselves and toothy marine life. Dr. Sidney R. Galler, head of the office of Naval Re search's biology staff, des cribes the holothurin as "pretty potent stuff." The extract is available in "rather substantial quantities and a small amount will send fish into fatal convulsions," he said. As an example of the po tency of the toxin, he cited an instance when tanks contain ing sea cucumbers were being converted for use by fish. Al though the tanks were thoroughly cleansed, he said, it took a month before it was possible to put fish into the tanks without them dying. Question Examined Whether the holothurin is safe to apply on humans is the question still being rigor ously examined. Dr. Galler said it's still too early to tell who will be af fected most, "the swimmer or the fish." One of the primary investi gators is Dr. Ross Nigrelli of the New York Zoological So ciety. Studies on various as pects of the toxin also are being conducted by Dr. Harry Sobotka of New York's Mt. Sinai hospital and Dr. Sey mour Fricss of the Naval Medical Research Institute. In testing the substance, the investigators noted that holr thurin also stopped the growth of tumors in white mice. Another avenue of research is the apparent relationship of the sea cucumber to the pois onous sea urchin. Researchers hope discovery of the chemi cal compositions of the poi- Funeral Rites Held For FDR Granddaughter Hyde Park, N. Good housekeepers are hard to find - women ready to bring insight, tenderness and considered judgment to the difficult job of bringing up children. And substitute mothers are even harder to find. It is totally absorbing work for the woman who takes it on wholeheartedly, but the satisfactions don't compensate for the difficulties if a wom an resents the job. There are many reasons why the woman of 50 years ago was able to be more satis fied with her job at home. Primarily, she knew with ab solute certainty what was ex pected of her as a human be ing. She had every reason to feel she was functioning in the best possible way if she ran a good home and raised her children properly. The modern woman is be set by uncertainty. She knows that the door is wide open to achievements in realms outside the home. If she has some education she doesn't want to waste it. If she has little education she may re gret that she didn't take ad vantage of her opportunities. It does little good to lec ture a young woman like Penny. Undoubtedly she feels guilty that she is not fulfill ing her responsibilities as a mother in the fullest sense. She must come to a re-evaluation of her situation from inside herself. The fact that she married and bore chil dren indicates that there is a strong desire within her to live a full woman's life. She should try to dovetail some of her other ambitions into that framework. The answer may be one that many women have found satisfactory. She might con tinue with her education dur ing the evenings while her children are young. This will bring variety and interest into her life. And she will have an exciting goal to work for a better, more interesting job when her children are older. (Copyright 1960. - General Features Corp.)
