B 5 Mother Says Tots Drugged To Cover Up Secret Affair Cleveland, Ohio (UPD Po lice said today the mother of the "sleeping beauty" sisters gave the little girls drugs as part of a "guilt complex" to cover up her secret love affair. Mrs. Lillian Fratantonio, 29, told her husband details of her infidelity, then called in police to confess she gave the drugs which put the girls into a baffling coma. One child, Bernadette, 3, al most died from the drugs while undergoing examina tion in New York, police re vealed. Mrs. Frantantonlo, now a patient in a maternity ward where she gave birth to her fifth child last Tuesday, gave the drug to her two children. She began drugging Berna dette last September and Ven ita, 5, a month ago. The chil dren apparently suffered no permanent ill effects from the drugs. Detective Sgt. Norman Fer ris said he felt Mrs. Fratan tonio's extra-marital affairs created a guilt complex which she tried to hide by causing her daughters to become ill. Huiband Remains Loyal Her husuand, Vincent Fra tantonio, 33, was stunned when he heard from his wife's lips the story of her secret romance. He said he would stand by her. "I had no idea this was go ing on," he said. "I thought we had a happy marriage. Sure, we had quarrels but we always talked things out." Fratantonio said her par ents, who lived with them, had bought a house for them to move into after their fifth child was born last week. He said they would go ahead with their plans. ' "I don't know who the oth er man is," Fratantonio said. "I don't know his name. I don't want to know." Mrs. Fratantonio confessed Saturday night that she gave the children drugs. Police said she did it to quiet the young sters whose playful noises sometimes upset her. She also said she drugged the girls to win back the affections of her husband which she feared she was losing. Charged With Neglect Mrs. Fratantonio was charg ed in Juvenile Court with ne glect of her children. Authorities, trying to de cide whether she should be treated as a criminal or as a mental patient, said they have not decided what the eventual outcome of the case will be. "It is not my job to pro vide alibis for persons who commit felonies," detective in spector Richard Wagner said. "It is up to the courts to say that she is to submit to men tal examination and treat ment." That was expected to be the police attitude in a hearing today with the police prose cutor on the case. Emphasise Medical Stand "This is not a criminal case, but strictly mental," he said. "She can probably be cured and returned to society as a useful, happy person. It would not be right to make her out a criminal." Gerber's view was support ed by Dr. Earl E. Smith, pe diatrician to the sisters, and doctors at Mt. Sinai hospital where the two have been un der treatment. Bernadette began lapsing into an intermittent coma last September. Her case baffled doctors, who gave her exhaus tive tests without results- Then last month, Venita be gan falling into a similar co ma, further deepening the medical mystery and giving the sisters nationwide atten tion. Finally last week, as Mrs Fratantonio was in St. Ann hospital giving birth to a third daughter and fifth child, the mystery was solved. Conduct Blood Tests It was decided to check the girls for barbiturate traces following a medical confer ence at Mt. Sinai hospital. Dr Gerber conducted the blood tests with positive results. Mrs. Fratantonio's confes sion followed.
