MONDAY, AUGUST 15, 1960 Pirates IVin Two AL Teams Battle "Br MILTON RICHMAN Maybe the National league race is over, but the Amercian league race apparently is only starting and could conceivably wind up in an unprecedented three-team photo-finish. The Pirates look like they have clear sailing with a more than comfortable six-game lead in the National leauge, They took their biggest step of the season toward their first pennant since 1027 by sweeping a twin-bill from the Cardinals, 9-4 and 3-2 in 11 innings Sunday. ' But there Is no margin for comfort among the top three teams in the American league where the White Sox and Orioles are tied for first place and the third-place Yankees are only one percentage point behind. ; Tnat all came about when the White Sox took two games from the Athletics, 9-3 and .7-2, Sunday; the Red Sox snapped an eight-game Ori oles' winning streak, 3-2, and the Senators captured both ends of a doubleheader from the Yankees, 5-4 and 6-3 in 15 innings. Milwaukee blanked San Francisco, 3-0; the Cubs climb ed out of the NL cellar' with a 2-1 and 7-3 sweep over the Phillies, and the Dodgers beat the Reds, 0-5, in the nightcap after dropping the opener, 2-0. Indians Drop Two - In the AL Detroit won two games from Cleveland, 6-1 and 3-2, thereby enabling the Sen ators to climb Into a fourth place tie with the skidding Indians. Backed by a 13-hit attack, right-hander Vern Law of the Pirates won his 17th game by defeating the Cards, in the opener and Don Hoak gave Pittsburgh the "rubber game" of the five-game series with St. Louis by singling home Bob Skinner with the winning run in the 11th inning of the pightcap. Hoak's blow came off ace reliever Lindy Mc Danlel, who suffered his fourth loss against 10 victor ies. Fred Green, Pittsburgh's fourth pitcher, was the win ner. Wynn scattered nine hits and contributed a homer in gain ing his eighth victory in the nightcap. Mike Fornieless was the winner for Boston over Bait! more. Ron Hansen hit his 15th homer with one to tie the score in the sixth but the Red Sox pushed across the winning run in the seventh on a walk, Willie Tasby's single and Ted Williams' infield out. Bad Day for Yankees It was a bad day all around for the Yankees. Pitcher Camilo Pascual's first major league homer, a grand slam with two out in the sixth off Bob Turley won the opener for Washington. Then, in the 15th inning of the nightcap, loser Ralph Terry walked Billy Consolo with the bases Mantle Yanked From Game By Yankee Coach New York - WPD - Manager Casey Stengel explained today that he publicly disciplined Mickey Mantle because re peated warnings failed to make the New York Yankee slugger run out routine grounders. Stengel took the unusual ac tion in the sixth inning of Sun day's nightcap with the Wash ington Senators when he pull ed Mantle from the lineup. Stengel, Yankee brass and Mantle himself refused to say whether there also was a fine. "I took him out because he didn't run," growled Stengel. "I've spoken to him about it four or five times.Who does he think he is, a millionaire or something? I'm tired of see ing him not run on those things. If he can't run, then he should tell me." Mantle, who is hitting a disappointing .273 this season, turned aside all questions with a shrug of his shoulders. He did not say whether his chronically-ailing knees were bothering him. To make matters worse, Yankee slugger Roger Marls had to leave the nightcap when he suffered bruised ribs sliding into second base and Casey Stengal angrily yanked Mickey Mantle after he failed to run out ' a sixth-inning grounder in the finale. Eddie Mathew's three-run homer in the first inning and Lew Burdette's five-hit pitch ing gave the Braves their vic tory over the Giants. Sam Jones allowed only three hits in seven innings but suffered his 13th loss. The victory was Burdette's 13th. Cubs Desert Basement Southpaw Dick Ellsworth helped the Cubs desert the basement for the first time since July 3 by holding the Phils to four hits in the open er. Rookie Ron Santo hom ered off loser Gene Conley and then hit a grand-slam off loser Dallas Green in the nightcap. Ernie Banks hit his 33rd homer in the second game. Moe Drabowsky was the winner, Cal McLish scattered nine Dodger hits in winning his fourth game for the Reds in the opener. The Reds scored both their runs in the first inning off Stan Williams, who had to depart before the in ning was over due to a sore shoulder. In the nightcap, Larry Sherry stopped the Reds on two hits over the last six in nings to gain his 10th victory. Tom Davis paced the Dodgers' 14-hit attack with three hits. Charlie Smith, whose birth day is one month from today, gave himself an early present Sunday night In Pacific Coast league play. The 22-year-old South Carolinian blasted two hom ers for the Indians, one in each ball game of the double header against Tacoma. The first opened the first game scoring and was what proved to be the winning run. The second was a 11th inning grand slammer with Smith scoring the winning run once more and proved to be the first Inside-the-park homer ever hit in the Tacoma Giants' new stadium. Spokane took the first game 3-0, as Ray Semproch notched his seventh win against ho losses, and won the second contest, 11-1, when a total of 11 pitchers took the mound five for the Indians and six for Tacoma. In other action, Salt Lake and Portland beat each other by the same score, 3-0. Seattle and Sacramento split with the Rainiers winning the first, 3-2, and the Solons the second, 3-1. San Diego nipped Vancouver in a single game, 5-4. Salt Lake took , its first game win by scoring'thrce tal lies in the top of the ninth frame on two singles, a dou two intentional walks. Win ning hurler Tom Parsons and loser Harry Byrd each allow ed seven hits. The night cap Portland vic tory was a combination of three-hit hurling by Vito Val entinetti and home runs by Daryl Westerfeld and Don Taussing. Medford Girl Events at GP Grants Pass -IUPD- Tualatin Hills Swim club of Beaver ton took home the team tro phies for both Boys and Girls division in the two-day invi tational swimming meet held here Saturday and Sunday. The Tualatin Hills boys swim mers won first place honors with 148 points while the girls compiled 131V4 points. Northeast Y of Portland was second in both divisions scoring 104V4 for girls and 85 for boys in the meet sponsor ed by the Grants Pass Jaycees and sanctioned by the AAU. Trophies were also present ed to the top individual scores in each classification. Girls took all but one of the individ ual trophies. Individual win ners were: P. Aleskus, North east Y in the under 10-year-old classification; Linda Kurtz, Redding, Calif., in 11-12 year- old classification; Erma In- dahl, Tualatin Hills, 13-14; Linda Hess, Medford, 15-16, and the senior division trophy Jericho, N. Y. - (UPD - Bob Gardner of New York City beat Howell Ven Gerbig Jr. of Meadow Brook, L. I., 9 and 8, Sunday to win the Met ropolitan Amateur golf cham pionship. Gardner won with a two-over-par 73 on the 7,-122-yard Meadow Brook club course. Out of State Cars Cop Top Honors At SOTA Dragster Meet Two sleek and powerful ac celeration machines, known in racing circles as "drag sters," took top honors in fi nal competition runs Sunday at the "Big Gasser" drag meet held at the White City drag strip by Southern Ore gon Timing association. Saturday saw the "Glass Slipper" from Sacramento, Calif., set a new strip rec ord and set a new elapsed time mark. Sunday the Slip per crew of Cortapassi and Butler came back and eclips ed their Saturday best with a blazing 155.17 miles per hour effort In but 9.62 sec onds. This effort withstood the onslaught of all other com petition and now stands as the official strip gas record. Early Sunday morning the team of Blanchard and Skeans from Portland, and Vancouv er, Wash., began running and made several runs in excess of 145 mph but seemed to lack the little "extra" it would take to better the Slip pers' time. The crowd of some some 2,000 spectators watched both machines flash off the start ing line at the drop of flag man Dale Carters' green stan dard. The Blanchard. ma chine built up an early lead when the Slipper lost traction for just a fraction of a sec ond. This early lead proved important because at the fin ish line the Slipper was pull ing up fast on the winner but failed to get ahead before crossing the end-of-race mark. After edging the Cortapassi and Butler machine for hon ors in the "A" class dragster division, Blanchard returned and copped the four-foot-tall top eliminator trophy along with the $100 cash by beating the Cole-Wilkinson "B" class dragster in the last big race of the day. The Cole-Wilkin son entry from Stockton was a top performer in its class. put on a terrific show for the crowd, but simply wasn't fast enough to get to the fin ish line ahead of the Skeans & Blanchard champion. Top honors In "B" class dragster went to Cole & Wil kinson and they also copped Wins Four Swim Meet went to Corby Coonts of the North Virginia Aquatic club of Arlington Va. Miss Hess, the winner in the 15-16 age classification won all four of the four events she entered with firsts in the 80 yard backs t r o k e, 200-yard freestyle, 160-yard individual medley and 80-yard breast stroke. Contestants were al lowed to compete in only four events. Coonts tied for first in the Senior division with Jeannette Hendricks of the University of Oregon Dolphin club, but judges awarded the trophy to him. Crown Portland (UPD Don Sweet pitched a three hitter and Pete Ballard hit a game-winning homer Saturday after noon as the Downtown Opti mists Little League club from Vancouver, B. C, scored a 1-0 championship victory over Vancouver, Wash., in the Northwest Little League Base ball championship playoffs. The victory advanced the British Columbia nine to the Western Regional Champion ships at Phoenix, Ariz., Aug. 18-20. Ralph Odell Links Champion Dr. Ralph Odell shook off his adversary's strong come back on the home stretch Sun day afternoon and captured the men's club championship in match play golf at Rogue Valley Country club. He trimmed Alan Holmes 3 and 2 in the finals of a tour nament which has been con tested over a period of sev eral weeks. Odell dunked a 12-foot putt for a par on the 34th hole of a scheduled 36 hole tussle to garner the title. Holmes staged a four-out-of-five hole winning streak on the back stretch of the after noon round but Odell had built a margin he could not overcome. The physician and surgeon, who was even par for the battle, was three under standard .over - 27 holes and ran up a 6 up spread in that time. His lawyer foe was four over for the 27 and the match. Rally Starts The rally by Holmes was started on the 28th hole of me maicn, no. 11 on me RVCC layout. He took a par when Odell hit his second shot over the green and bogied. The lawyer then got the 30th with a par and was just 4 down. On 31 Holmes downed a 30-foot putt for a bird to win the green. Then he won the 32nd with a par when Odell dropped a high tee shot over on an adjacent fairway. Odell s lead was cut to 2 up. On the 33rd (No. 15 hole of the course) Holmes parked his tee shot on the green and Odell was to the right of the carpet. Odell chipped close for an easy putt and, when Holmes' long putt stopped on the green, the two halved the hole. When Holmes chipped to about four feet from the cup and Odell, using his putter, barely got on the green, it appeared that the attorney might further hack his deficit. But, the doctor downed his 12-foot putt and Holmes missed his try from shorter range. The match was over. One Under for 18 Odell had a one-under-par 71 for the morning 18 holes to Holmes' 76 and won six holes to the attorney's two for a 4 up lunchtime lead. Holmes gained his two greens with a birdie and an eagle. His eagle was on the par five No. 18 hole. Both men knocked great drives. Holmes then hit to within 4V4 feet from the cup and put in his putt for a three. Odell had birdies on Nos. I and 5 in the morning and on Nos. 1, 6 and 7 greens in the afternoon. Holmes' afternoon birds were on No. 7 and No. 13. The doctor had his 6 up gap after 24 holes of the match. Holmes was even standard for the full afternoon portion of the match and Odell was one over.
