Princess Anne On Monday, Aug. 15, a girl with the resounding name of Anne Elizabeth Alice Louise Windsor Mountbatten celebrates her 10th birthday. The first decade can be an eventful one for a little girl, especially if she is a Princess of Great Britain, daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, and apple of the col lective eye of 50 million Britons. As in the past, Princess Anne will probably celebrate her big day with her mother, father, and brothers (including her new brother, Prince Andrew), at the family castle in Scotland. There may be a birthday party for a few young friends, all carefully guarded from outsiders. Yet tie public will watch their charming princess with more eager ness than ever. Queen Elizabeth, anxious to guard her children's privacy, tried to keep them from public exhibition, and most glimpses of them came through windows of limousines and trains, or at sport ing events. But this year Princess Anne has appeared in public more than ever, as bridesmaid in two big weddings: those of her cousin, Lady Pamela Mountbatten, and her fa vorite aunt, Princess Margaret. Next year may be even more momentous for Princess Anne. In the fall she will go to a private girl's school, the first time a British princess has departed from the tra dition of governesses and tutors to mingle with nonroyal children. To celebrate Anne's birthday, family weekly presents an album showing the pretty princess through the years and showing, too, the striking resemblance she bears to her mother when she was a young princess. Anne holds her new brother, Prince Andrew, born this year. It is human nature to put off thoughts of death as long as we can. This is especially true when our years are young, our health is good, and we're hav ing a wonderful time. But even in this life, the true values and real joys of living come into clear focus only when we face up to the facts of death and ask ourselves: "What does it mean?" Once we do this, the terrifying specter of death becomes less fear some. We see it as a teacher, cau tioning us to shape our lives in n manner pleasing to God. We see it not as a Grim Reaper, robbing us of out worldly pleasures, but as the golden gateway to God's greatest of all gifts eternal life. There are some people, of course, who believe that after this life there is no more. The pure and the sinful, they contend, all meet the same gloomy end of eter nal nothingness; there is no judg ment, no punishment, no reward. But if our reason did not tell us this is wrong, we have the clearer assurance of God Himself that man shall live on earth, shall even tually meet death, that he shall be judged and, upon that judgment, shall live eternally either in joy or misery. This has been the teaching of the age-old Catholic Church since the time of the Apostles. It is a doctrine that compels a Catholic to think of his life in terms of his death. It sounds like a gloomy doc trine to those who dislike to face up to the facts of death and the certainty of divine judgment, but Catholics are inspired rather than depressed by it. However gloomy the prospect of death may be, Catholics are i- jj V Ft consrantiy reminuca I by the Church of the U importance of facing up to it instead of try ing to ignore it. In the month of November each year, the thoughts of the faithful are especially di rected to the special considera tions of that occasion when every human being must take off on that final "flight" to God's vast unknown.
