The ranger said coopera tion of the forest users would be appreciated, and that dam ages to facilities cuts down on money available for main taining and policing camp grounds. Collection of camp ers' debris at the spillway at the Gcbhard claim, now a for. est park site, was reported. Complaints have come from the Applegate area in general regarding deliberate breaking Ft. Jones are the three towns in the county which have the self-imposed tax. "They're crying their eyes out in Fort Jones," said Ealy, "because people are going to Etna and Yreka to shop." Supervisor Earl Ager (Tule lake) insisted that the one cent boost in taxes would drive shoppers to Oregon, which has no tax. W. (Art) Barr, Mt. Shasta Dunsmuir supervisor, snorted, "People aren't going to drive very far to save one cent." Supervisor Ealy suggested that the sales tax proposal be put on the November ballot so the voters could voice their preference. "We don't want 1o force it down their throats," he said. VIRGINIA EASTMAN AND i SHIRLEY McELMURRY Tablets Table Rock - The Sams Val ley fire which was accurately described in Wednesday's M. T. was one of the worst from a damaging standpoint in the histoity of the Sams Valley area, and created quite a lit tle excitement in our local district as the flames, pushed by a high wind, roared over and around the north end of lower Table Rock and burned down two homes on the west side road. The Straus Brothers' dairy farm suffered heavy damage in buildings, hay, and some uhharvested crops' burned. along with most of the farm equipment, which carried no insurance. We went througn the fire zone about 6 o'clock and at that time the fire was traveling a little north of east, and seemed to be headed to ward the business section of Sams Valley. But before 7, the wind changed, bringing the fire around the north end of lower Table Rock, and down the slope to within 100 feet of the Don Wheeler home. Far from spectacular was something we saw from the highway as we passed the Straus farm. A large hereford cow was wandering around across the hot and blackened ground, like she was a part of the last round up. According to eye witnesses, the fire started along t h e highway near the Hutchison barn, and was touched off by a spark from a rotary weed cutter, operated by a crew from the State highway de partment. The whole Sams Valley area, and some ad joining districts might have suffered heavy damage, if it hadn't been for the fast and good work of the forest serv ice, Central Point rural crews, and neighbors, with bulldoz ers, spray rigs, and other equipment. The Jackson County Grangeri at their recent pic nic at Elks picnic grounds did their best to reduce the beef surplus, The 500 or more present devoured some II hind quarters of choice white face steers. This was barbecued by "Shy" Morthland, and was at tender as a woman's heart. Shy, with his long curve-bladed knife, like the saber of the pirates of old, made him look like one. Benny Peeks, herdsman at the Table Rock ranch, is at the Josephine county fair this week, where he is exhibiting 10 head of registered mixed hereford cattle, which will be shown later at the Siskiyou fair in Yreka, Calif. A recent ad in the M.T. by Ray Ryan offering farm machinery for sale caused tome of hit neighbori to think he wat about to fold up. and leave, but such it not the case, according lo Ray. The farm equipment it tome he look from a farm he told, and the new own er didn't want it. Happy, the Nelson farm dog, while watching for in truders on his master's farm. discovered an animal he had n't met up with before. The animal's body was striped By Ft. I. NEALON tached was a long, bushy tail, carried horizontally, but gear ed so it could' be raised in second's time. Happy fol lowed along after the trotting animal thinking it might stop, so he could learn more about it. It did stop, and Happy found he had got too close to the business end of a skunk. Happy got something to bring to his master, that he couldn't see, but could toll from a dis tance that he had something. At a recent session of the local Sunday tchool, it wat voted to keep the flag pole, to Mr. Johnson, our good painter, gave it a coat of paint, using an extension to his roller gadget. What is needed now it a 50 tiar flag, a rope, and a tteeple jack to put up the rope. Aye, tear her tattered en sign down? Four local young people are attending the Bible youth camp near Butte Falls this week. Our old pine tree is slow ly dying from the top down. On making an examination we found that the ttate highway crew had cut roots in lowering the road grade, one being 17 inches in di ameter, which most likely will be the finish of the old tree, which hat been a tow ering land mark for more than 100 years. Brownie, the cow, had re fused to eat her breakfast, and seemed under the weath er, and we were looking her over, when the following con versation took place. The little niece from Port land: "Where is her husband, Uncle Emmett?" No answer. "Don't she have a hus band?" "Yes." "Well, where is he?" "Probably visiting in Uncle John's pasture." "Why don't he stay with his wife?" "He has more than one wife." "No!" "Yes, cattle are not like people." A birthday party and din ner honoring Mrt. John ' Dodge, held Sunday in the thade of the big Oakt at the J. S. Richardson farm, wat attended by tome 40 relatives. One visitor, not a relative, wat Robert Hottet ter, of the Bureau of Land Management, Medford of fice. TIMBER SALES Yreka Charles Yates, su pervisor of Klamath national forest, told Siskiyou county supervisors this week that he estimated the county's share of national forest timber sales for 1959-60 at $1,040,000. That would be a gain of $456,000 over last year. Loggers har vested 185 million board feet in the county in 1958-59. the bitters which were good for anything that ailed you.
