Since ' their last perfor mance here several oi the modified drivers have won major races. Ed Brown, the last main event winner here, has taken the Southern Ore gon championship in an event held at Klamath Falls. Last weekend he also won a main event at Chico, Calif. Art Pollard, a popular driv er at the Ashland speedway, had his car figure in a very spectacular fire at the cham pionship race in Klamath Falls. It was repaired and he won the main event at Port land last week end. Dale Hankins of Klamath Falls is finally getting the bugs worked out of his super charged car. Dale drove to third place money at Klam ath Falls while partially blinded by dirt that got under his goggles. This week's race at the Ashland track again will have some of the top drivers on the west coast gunning for the $1000 guaranteed purse. Time trials start at 7 p.m. First race will be at 8 p.m. Pocatello, Idaho - (UPB -Riverside, Calif., and San Jose, Calif., fresh from re gional championship victories here, now go to the Colt league world series beginning Friday at Ontario, Calif. Crater Gains Berth In Junior Tourney Central Point - Central Point Crater Cubs will repre sent southern Oregon in the Oregon Junior Baseball associ ation tourney which opens Friday at Eugene. The defending state champs qualified last night by de feating the Grants Pass Cubs 12 to 7 at White City. This was the second straight play off win for Crater over GP and ended a two-of-threc series. The Central Point team won 10 to 2 on Monday at Grants Pass. A six-run surge in the sixth inning sewed up last night's contest for Crater. The mark ers were on singles by Darrell Summerfield, Scott Eaton, Louis Alvarez and M ik e Glines, two fielder's options and five bases on balls. " Central Point has the use of 12 walks in the fracas SPORTS Floyd Will Not Waif Forever Stockholm, Sweden (UPB Heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson let it be known to day he doesn't intend to wait forever for lngemar Johans son to make up his mind about a third bout. Patterson arrived here Tuesday for an exhibition boxing tour and was surpris ed to hear Johansson had flown to Switzerland the same day. "I'm ready to fight Inge mar this week or next year or any time," said Patterson. "It all depends when he wants to fight me," the cham pion added, "But I don't want to wait too long for the next match, and absolutely not for a year like the last time." while GP batters drew free passes on seven occasions. A city-by-city check of the eight bidders for the four open berths in baseball's ex pansion program also showed that Toronto and Atlanta presently lack adequate ma jor league stadiums while Denver's chief drawback is its comparatively sparse popula tion. Here is a rundown of the franchise seekers: New York- Presumably can't miss as a new National league entry. If team is grant ed a franchise for 1961, it will play its games in Yankee Sta dium. Hopes to play in new city-built stadium on Long Is land in '62. Minneapolis-St. Paul-A sol id bet to win an American league franchise . . . the Twin Cities have a combined popu lation of 1,477,080. The re cently - constructed Minneapo lis Metropolitan Stadium has 22,000 seats but can be ex panded to 40,000 . . . both cities drew well in American association last season. Buffalo - Branch Rickey claims this community-owned team is "The most ready" for major league baseball. Owns 14 players outright. Boasts a new stadium seating 35,000 and its metropolitan area is the 14th largest in the nation. Toronto-Jack Kent Cooke, owner of the Toronto club in the International league, ready to make a strong pitch for NL franchise. Current club has a strong major league nucleus, is running away with the IL pennant. Metropolitan population is 1,490,200. Team uses Maple Leaf Stadium, built in 1926 and seats only 18,000. Most city fathers against financing new sta dium. Atlanta - Present team in Southern association using a stadium with only 13,500 seats. A stadium authority was set up by the legislature with the right to issue bonds for construction of a new field but no solid action taken. Metro politan area population is 1,015,000. Houston -Two groups bid ding for franchise. Present stadium seats 11,500 but plans are drawn to increase it to 30,000. Revenue bonds have been voted for $20 million coliseum and park on 250-acre site already chosen. Present team in American association drawing less than 2,000 a game but fans crying for ma jor league ball. Dallas-Forxh Worth-Principal backers are J. W. Bate son, owner of a construction firm, and newspaper publish er Amon Carter Jr. They pres ently own Twin City team in the American association. Plans for new 40,000-seat sta dium located midway between the cities have been drawn. FAME HALL PROPOSED Canton, Ohio - (UPD - This city is making an all-out ef fort to sell the National Foot ball league on the idea of es tablishing a professional foot ball "Hall of Fame." To prove its sincerity it recently held a contest for architects to sub mit designs for such a struc ture. It picked the winning design last Saturday. Dallas population is 932,680; Fort Worth, 353,388. Denver - Backers are the present management of the Denver Bears in the American association. Bob Howsam is chief stockholder, president and general manager. City population is only 415,786 but metropolitan area is 776,060. Bears Stadium seats 19,000 but is being expanded to 27, 000. Biggest attraction is it would be an ideal stop-over for NL teams. Portland Holds Baseball Month Portland - (UPD - Mayor Ter. ry Schrunk has decreed Aug ust "Baseball Month" in Port land. The mayor issued his proc lamation Tuesday, and urged baseball fans to come out to Multnomah Stadium to top an attendance of 100,000 for the final Portland home games of, the 1960 Pacific Coast leagua baseball season..
