Autos Race
Saturday
At Ashland
Super-modified autos make
a return appearance at the
Ashland Speedway Saturday
night, Aug. 13.
Since ' their last perfor
mance here several oi the
modified drivers have won
major races. Ed Brown, the
last main event winner here,
has taken the Southern Ore
gon championship in an event
held at Klamath Falls. Last
weekend he also won a main
event at Chico, Calif.
Art Pollard, a popular driv
er at the Ashland speedway,
had his car figure in a very
spectacular fire at the cham
pionship race in Klamath
Falls. It was repaired and he
won the main event at Port
land last week end.
Dale Hankins of Klamath
Falls is finally getting the
bugs worked out of his super
charged car. Dale drove to
third place money at Klam
ath Falls while partially
blinded by dirt that got under
his goggles.
This week's race at the
Ashland track again will
have some of the top drivers
on the west coast gunning for
the $1000 guaranteed purse.
Time trials start at 7 p.m.
First race will be at 8 p.m.

New York-(UPD-New York
and Minneapolis-St. Paul are
the strongest contenders but
Buffalo is the city best pre
pared for admission to the ma
jor leagues, a United Press
International survey has re
vealed. A city-by-city check of the
eight bidders for the four
open berths in baseball's ex
pansion program also showed
that Toronto and Atlanta
presently lack adequate ma
jor league stadiums while
Denver's chief drawback is its
comparatively sparse popula
tion. Here is a rundown of the
franchise seekers:
New York- Presumably
can't miss as a new National
league entry. If team is grant
ed a franchise for 1961, it will
play its games in Yankee Sta
dium. Hopes to play in new
city-built stadium on Long Is
land in '62.

cities drew well in American
