Hiram Fong (R-Hawaii) pose . . . with little hula girls on their arrival from Los Angeles to , (UPI Telephoto) Nixon Takes Presidential Campaign To Far Corners of Hawaiian Islands Honolulu -IUPII- Vice Presi dent Richard Nixon beamed his; presidential campaigning today Into the remotest reaches of this far-flung island state as he backed up his pledge to campaign anywhere and everywhere as the GOP presidential nominee. Nixon believes that even the smallest slate may decide what he sees as a hairline November contest and he is pitching hard for Hawaii's three electoral votes. First in History Already, Nixon Is the first presidential nominee to cam paign Hawaii in all of its proud history. He set out to day on a schedule that would make him the first nationally elected official tv visit more than two of Hawaii's five ma jor islands. Although some 70 per cent of the people and votes are on the island of Oahu, Nixon scheduled island hopping vis its and handshaking tours of such lesser known islands as Kauai and, Mnul as well as the "big island" of Hawaii, the area hereabouts hardest hit Climbers Conquer Granite Wall of Colorado Peak Estes Park, Colo. - IUPD -Two Californians set their sights toward new goals today after conquering the Dia mond, a previously uncllmbed 1,000 -foot vertical granite wall on the east face of 14,-256-foot Longs Peak. Teacher Robert F, Kamps, 27, North Hollywood, and David Rearlck, 28, a Pasa dena mathematician, crawled over the top of the Diamond Wednesday afternoon, and hiked up the last 250 feet to the top of the mountain. The Californians began their assault of the cliff, the last tinclimbcd major moun tain face in the United States, Monday. They made only 400 feet the first day. Cold drove them back to spend, the night at a grassy meadow beneath the towering wall. Hopes Secured They started out again Tuesday on the tension climb, using ropes secured to steel pitons pounded into the moun tain face to pull themselves up, and got about two-thirds of the way up the slope. They spent the night roped to a narrow ledge on the over hanging face of the cliff. The last 300 feet of the Diamond, which Kaps and Rearick negotiated Wednes day, were the toughest, due to the face which sloped back 6 per cent from vertical and left them hanging from their ropes. Once to the top of the cliff, however, they bounded easily up to the top of Longs Peak, and signed the guest register of persons who have climbed the peak before by easier ' routes. The gunman escaped with $48,000 in cash and over $3, 000 in Series E bonds Monday after taping a female teller and forcing another clerk to open the vault. The gunman had gained entrance to t h e bank through a rear window and waited until the first workers showed up in the morning. Police and the FBI have Indicated they think the rob ber is the same man who suc cessfully stuck up the Hous ing Authority office here June 1, and escaped with $400. The Monday robbery was the largest since 1955 when the Inland Empire bank in Umatilla was robbed.of $47, 000 In cash. Accuses Kennedy '' In the evening, the vice president appeared pn an hour-long statewide television show where he charged that his Democratic opponent for the presidency has paid the price of allowing the nation's union leaders to dictate his labor platform in order to gel their support. He answered questions put to him by Hawaii's newspaper editors. Nixon said it was his contention that "the President of the United States cannot owe his election to any one group or be under the influ ence of any one segment of the people of the United Slates." The vice president was scheduled to wind up his Ha waiian campaigning with a major speech tonight in Hono lulu and will leave Friday morning aboard a chartered flight for Seattle, Wash. Woman Ends Career Of 'Singing' Snake Rome, Vt.-Mrs. Myra T. Stansell was walking in her backyard on her way to feed the chicken when she heard a pleasant sound like some thing or someone "singing." She looked in the direction of the sound just in time to see a rattlesnake. She leaped back before the snake could strike. The snake didn't have a second chance. Mrs. Stansell summoned a neighbor and they shot the snake with a shotgun.
