B $ Suggestions Given For Pupils Riding, Walking to School WATER REPELLENT : All your youngster s shoes can now be maae water re pellent easily and quickly at home. Next time you stock up on shoe polish, ask for a water repellent preparation. More than 5 per cent of the 6.500 accidental deaths among school-age children in 1959 Is attributed to accidents oc curring while students are go ing to and from school. Medford Police Chief Charles P. Champlin pointed this out and said a large num ber of these fatal' accidents can be blamed on faulty bicycle-riding and pedestrian habits as well as just plain "carelessness." In order that all Medford area students might make the many trips to and from school without death or injury dur ing the coming school year, Chief Champlin has listed a number of rules and sugges tions for both pedestrians and bicycle riders to follow. For bicyclists they are: In Good Shape 1. Keep bicycles in good shape. It will be. safer, and it will last longer. 2. Observe all traffic reg ulations, such as red and green lights, one-way streets and stop signs. 3. Have white light on front and danger signal on rear for night riding. 5. Have satisfactory sig nalling device to warn of ap proach. 6. Give pedestrians the right of way. Avoid side sidewalks. If sidewalks must be used then use extra care. Look for Cars 7. Look out for cars pull ing out into traffic and keep a sharp lookout for auto doors being opened suddenly. 8. Never hitch on other vehicles, stunt ride or race in traffic. 9. Never carry other rid ers nor any packages that ob struct vision or prevent prop er control of the bicycle. 10. Be sure your brakes are operating efficiently and keep your bicycle in perfect running condition. ' 11. Slow down at all street intersections and look to the right and left before crossing. Hand signals . 12. Always use proper hand signals for turning and stopping. For pedestians the sugges tions are: , 1. When you are walking face oncoming traffic if the poad or street has no side walk. 2. Do not run or play in streets or roads under any circumstance. 3. Do not run out from be tween parked vehicles into the street. 4. Always use crosswalks. Obey Signals 5. Be sure to obey the "walk" and "wait" signal lights in downtown areas. If these rules and sugges tions are followed and school children are "alert" at all times, then many of the sense- less and tragic accidents that occur while children aare go ing to and from school, w'.ll be avoided, Champlin empha sized. Champlin also asks for the cooperation of parents. He urges them to make sure that their children know good bi cycle riding and pedestrian safety habits. Home Movie Club Heads List of New Clubs in '60 Heading the high school student's "clubs-to-join" list this year is the home movie club - a new activity at many schools that is educa tional as wgII as fun. More student shutterbugs are turning to more advanced photography. Many are re placing their snapshot camer as with home movie equip ment and they are1 either forming new movie clubs or creating movie divisions with in their present camera club. This new concept of high school photography clubs stems from the development of movie cameras that are simple to operate. These make it easier for students to pro duce their own movies. Valuable Service New club members will find they are not only satis fying their own interests, but offer a valuable service to their school too. Home movies taken by students are invalu able as visual aids for the classroom and offer the stu dent an opportunity to learn by doing. Students can film every thing from a botanical garden for a biology class to activi ties in city hall for the civics course. Art, music and geography subjects can also be present ed on film in an interesting fashion. With slow motion control in most Cameras, the boys can film sports events. Later, when the players view the movies, they can determine how to improve their game. The girls may want to film a fashion show of sewing class designs. And, the mem bers can film important school ceremonies to show at future class get-togethers for a lasting record. Siskiyou Schools To Open Aug. 29 " ' Yreka - Schools in Siskiyou county will open Aug. 29, ac cording to the school superin tendent's office. Among schools opening Aug. 29 are those in Monta gus, Dunsmuir, Etna, Horn hrook. Forks of Salmon. Ft. Jones, Gazelle, Grenada, Hap py Camp, Hilt, Yreka, Somes Bar, Horse Creek, Macdoel, Mt. SCHOOL BUSES More than 100,000 school buses operate daily during school months in the United States, covering more than 2,500,000 miles and carrying 7,000 school children. During the homework per iod, proper lighting is essen tial. Basic rule is to have good overall room lighting, plus a wall, study or table lamp to light the enure work surface. Slated to go to college this fall will be the classical tie; but with a fresher, livelier ap proach in narrower shapes; in prints, geometric patterns and conversational figures. The youngster who leaves for school each day after hav ing eaten a nourishing break fast stands a better chance of becoming a good student than the one who skips or skimps on this meal, A foreign language should be learned when a child is in grammar school.
