(UPI Telephoto) Boy Scout Camp At Lake of Woods Enters Fourth Week The annual Boy Scout Camp McLoughlin at Lake of the Woods is now in its fourth week, according to Don Chil cote, activities director for the camp. The camp, which began July 10, lasts five weeks with new Scouts coming each week. Most all of the boys come with their own troops as a unit, usually reserving a camp site in advance. About 600 boys participate each year from the Crater Lake Scout council. The Scouts usually register Sunday afternoon, get set tled, then join a central camp fire that evening. "All first , . year campers enter the circle end add a piece of wood to the fire. Orientation Tour a.m.. although most Scouts are usually up earlier doing their chores and getting ready for the day.. After breakfast they attend an orientation tour of the Rifle, Mo-Skeet, and archery ranges as well as the handicraft area. While the boys are on this tour, the Scout leaders tour the activities area where they receive instruction from the activities staff, so they in turn can instruct their own troops. , In the afternoon, the youths work on merit badge work and the "Pick and Choose" program, designed to allow them to do what they want to between 4 and 9 p.m. The second camp day is spent in scheduling into the activities field sports and waterfront activities and learning the Scout skills. Both Monday and Tuesday eve i nings are free so each Indi vidual Scoutmaster can hold a troop campfire If he desires. Wednesday mornings, cook ing and packing demonstra tions are held besides the regular schedule. Scouts were instructed how to prepare a pack properly while the Scoutmasters and Patrol cooks were given pointers on how to cook a meal with de. hydrated food. In the after noon the troops go on hikes Meeting Planned For OSC Students Dr. Dan W. Poling, dean of men at Oregon State college, and Bob Knoll.-alumnl direo tor for the college, will be in Medford Ihls week to speak at a meeting1 of students planning to enter college this fall, and their parents. . The -meeting is set for Au gust' 4 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Miss Karen Culbert son, 2615 Hillcrest rd., who is county chairman for Beaver Invitation to Education. Miss Culbertson said that students planning to enter OSC this fall, or have not yet chosen a college, are invited to attend. Dr. , Poling. Knoll and others will speak, and the students and their parents will be encouraged to ask questions. An OSC movie will be shown. Mc Loughlin Scenic tour. Others went to Harriett lake, Four Mile lake, the Brown Moun tain trail, and Heavenly Twins. These groups returned Thursday afternoon. , . (. Thursday evening a fare well party was held for Mr and Mrs. Dick Clark, Med. ford. Clark has been serving as assistant camp director and program director. They arc now preparing for his trip to the Schiff Scout reser vation in New Jersey. During his six weeks stay there he will prepare for professional scouting. ": w: Central Campflr Friday the Scouts continued their activities and In the evening conducted another central campfire planned by the Scoutmasters. Skits, songs, and stunts were presented by the individual troops. Saturday morning was spent In preparation for the after noon board of review and the evening Court of Honor. A water carnival was also held during the afternoon. Other events included an egg and spoon race, fire building race, tootsie pop dive, and big bag of wind watermelon scramble. Sunday morning a Protes tant church service was held and at noon Scoutmasters were presented with their 1960 Camp McLoughlin Staff neckerchiefs and the Senior Patrol leaders were given camp patches and year tags for their troops. Highlighting the current week of camping is the an- nual midnight climb up Mt. McLoughlin, It was ' to take place last night. Flares were lit at various Intervals from the base of the ridge to the top of the mountain. Three flares were to be lit on the top sometime between 11:30 and midnight. FINAL i 1 ......
