Boy Scout Camp At Lake of
Woods Enters Fourth Week
The annual Boy Scout Camp
McLoughlin at Lake of the
Woods is now in its fourth
week, according to Don Chil
cote, activities director for
the camp.
The camp, which began
July 10, lasts five weeks with
new Scouts coming each
week. Most all of the boys
come with their own troops as
a unit, usually reserving a
camp site in advance. About
600 boys participate each year
from the Crater Lake Scout
council.
The Scouts usually register
Sunday afternoon, get set
tled, then join a central camp
fire that evening. "All first
, . year campers enter the circle
end add a piece of wood to
the fire.
Orientation Tour
a.m.. although most Scouts
are usually up earlier doing
their chores and getting ready
for the day.. After breakfast
they attend an orientation
tour of the Rifle, Mo-Skeet,
and archery ranges as well as
the handicraft area.
While the boys are on this
tour, the Scout leaders tour
the activities area where they
receive instruction from the
activities staff, so they in
turn can instruct their own
troops. ,
In the afternoon, the youths
work on merit badge work
and the "Pick and Choose"
program, designed to allow
them to do what they want
to between 4 and 9 p.m.
The second camp day is
spent in scheduling into the
activities field sports and
waterfront activities and
learning the Scout skills. Both
Monday and Tuesday eve
i nings are free so each Indi
vidual Scoutmaster can hold
a troop campfire If he desires.
Wednesday mornings, cook
ing and packing demonstra
tions are held besides the
regular schedule. Scouts were
instructed how to prepare a
pack properly while the
Scoutmasters and Patrol
cooks were given pointers on
how to cook a meal with de.
hydrated food. In the after
noon the troops go on hikes
